Yes exactly she thinks people would side track ignore her as she isn't a mother so always aims to be most important in the lives of everyone she loves. She might also fear that Maskeen would marry second time for a kid or worse will divorce her, so keeps dominating him to the level of bossing so he doesn't think on those line

@Bold could be true. Unlike Rumi, she never badmouths her in laws. On the contrary always speaks of them with a kind of respectful fear.

I think Mani had a job in China. Gul Maskeen marriage happened at the time of their parents death when they weren't in a condition to actually think practically

At this time none of those situations is in place so he is thinking practically
