Characters are very important than the chemistry to connect with any pair for me. If I go by the only chemistry then I should have liked RidhBir too because they also had good chemistry but I could not because of Kabir's character and it's not about positive or grey or negative characters for me, it's about if I connect with the characters and not and I enjoyed them or not. I enjoy Riddhima and Aryan scenes but Riddhima and Kabir scenes not that much.
I think the connectivity with the characters is important. One can even connect with the villan or a grey shaded character in a show if well written.
The makers of IMMJ made a lousy work at developing the side characters properly.. making them villan in one episode, the main leads angry with them and in the next episode, everything is forgiven..It made some of the fans lose interest and unable to forge a connection with the characters.
The main example of which is Ishani. Her loathing for riddhima could have been understandable (ofcourse not justified) but her unjustified anger towards the man who sacrificed and suffered so much for her is not only baffling but also unforgiving.

Now all media channels started that the show is in danger and viewership is decreasing...it all started with that gossip tv answer that Immj2 is safe but we need to increase viewership
