We cannot deny that nobody faces any of what Sai is going through... Mostly people are able to connect to Sai because either they are like her (to some extent) or wished to be like her... I have seen a girl married at 21 faced difficult situations in in-laws home and she stood up just like Sai (love marriage and hubby was marine engineer so he would be out for work 5-6 months altogether), they even used to complain to us about her behaviour of giving befitting replies but we just used to respond she is like that she won't take anything unnecessary questions as well as she would rectify or being sorry when she do mistakes... Now they are changing and realising slowly...

Though am not sure of feminism and all, I could say Sai is not totally alone in the real life as well and there are many out there...

As I mentioned in the other topic too, I like the fact that more than being an icon of feminism she is shown as a strong woman. She will be twice nicer with people who are nice to her and ten times bad to people who are bad to her. That's what I like about her because I am like this in real life. Though I don't have a golden heart like her who will do anything for the loved ones. Apun selfish che. đŸ€Ł She fights for what's right and for the people she loves and for her own self respect. There are so many ITV shows were the heroine is shown action taking feminist but I am glad Sai is not one of them. She will make mistakes, she will forgive, she won't go for the legal rights every two tracks of the story. She will just be a strong woman without shying away.

To agree or disagree will depend on what you define as Feminism.

I started watching GHKPM because of Sai Joshi. I loved her loud unapologetic bindaas attitude of my way or high way. No grey shades for her in life, either things are right or wrong.

Few find her disrespectful and rude. But for Sai Joshi it’s you get what you give to me, sometimes she serves it back with interest too 😉

(sometimes I really want to be like her and not give a f*** and give it back to people. Probably that’s why I love her đŸ€”)

How many girls can survive what she had been through without getting scared for life? If you are going to argue it’s a fictional character I would request you to stop reading from here.

She comes from a single parent household. Parent is a father and police officer by profession. So most of the time I would guess she had to fend for herself even though UM was there. She was being harassed by a goon from her early teens. Still topped in her studies and never let herself deter from her goals.

Lost her father who was her world and had to go through a samjotha wali shaadi. She is absolutely abhorred by her in-laws and not accepted. They don’t even treat her like a human being sometimes.

What does Sai Joshi do in her in-laws place? Without cowering down to the ill treatment meted out to her, she gives them back with interest. Yes she is rude and disrespectful to the elders. But do the elders deserve it? Oh yeah 100% I would say! Being elders doesn’t give free pass to misbehave or ill treat others.

Loves her Aai and stands up for her. Helps Tai to reunite with her husband and her daughter. Supports Shivani bua and helps her to get out of a bad relationship.

For me Sai is one character who has got a never say die attitude. She doesn’t get disheartened and picks herself up and gets ready for the next zillat arena fight with a smile.

Sai might be just a fictional character for few but for most she inspires to fight against injustice. We all may not be facing same situation like Sai, but few might have abusive in laws, or emotionally abusive husband or a infidelity in their marriage. Or totally different set problems in their life since we have varied age group in the forum.

When they see Sai tackling her problems head on they will get inspired and might even get courage to get out of the toxic environment or find courage to tackle them sensibly unlike Sai did in devkit track! 😉😬

Jokes apart I belong to a group where I believe ITV and cinema does influence our society and vice versa. The TRP audience does get influenced by the drama.

There are people who might look down at itv drama and say yeh sub bakwaas hai. Yes it’s bakwas with no logic. But the sad part is it’s real in some part of my country in India. I have seen worst in real life than these serials show and would vouch that Bhavani Chavans still exist among us in our society.

So when a Jodha or a Sai fight injustice on screen (even though from different centuries) I cheer them and get inspired to fight my battles irl. People questioning and judging my taste and wondering why would I need inspiration from a ITV FL, my answer is in the of form of a question -

Have you ever felt
at any point in your life this is worst than the tv saas bahu drama? If you haven’t - what are you doing reading this post? Go enjoy your life. If you have welcome to my world! đŸ€Ł

So coming back to the question is Sai icon of Feminism? IMO Yes! Because she fights against problems that patriarchy perpetuates. The fight can be as small as I won’t change my original name Sai after marriage or an important one like I will pursue my studies and fulfill my Aaba’s dream. (Yes yes I agree Virat supported herbut we are talking about Sai here so just let this one go😆)

Irrespective of the gender we belong, We all are Feminists when we fight against the patriarchic value system.

Disclaimer: This is just my view points of the Sai character. I am not talking about the Devkit track or whether Sai was right in breaking Virat’s trust. Even though I believe Sai is right with her rude attitude from the beginning to rest of the Chavan’s because she needs that to survive in CN. Else the CN gang will eat her alive! 😬

PS: Tagging few here. Sorry I couldn’t find few usernames but mentioning few more which are on top of my mind

Lovely I must say, I think she is reason why people watch this show. The way she is and has grown over the period.

She is different than what I have seen in Normal ITV shows, so Sairat. Will not go in the current situation of right or wrong, but it’s their growth as an individual and as a couple which is very different .

But you have summed up Sai Joshi brilliantly

Note: Every individual has some positives and some negatives in them, it’s their growth that matters.

Sai is def an icon for me. I won't bring feminism here bec I don't understand the term.

Sai inspires me..I imagine myself there many times n I wish I cud be like her but I know that's impossible so I appreciate that trait in her 😆I always appreciate ppl who speak their minds but appreciate more who r tactful in speaking their minds.. I understand sai's limitations . That's OK by me. As per itv standards she gets an A+.

Icon of feminism doesn't really make sense. What makes sense is sai is the epitome of a strong woman who tries to never compromise on her self-respect.

I think feminism is a concept! It means differently to different people, its more or less how one interprets it.. i’ve been working in the field where we view everything from the lens of women empowerment, I believe in equality and social justice, more than feminism!

I think sai as a character is head strong, has high sense of self and social justice! She is ethical in her approach and no non sense in her attitude. She is loud at times and stubborn, but I guess she’s seen as brash instead of assertive because she is a woman as we expect women to be soft spoken.

I think Sai is a character who wouldn’t wish ill for some else, cannot witnesses someone being treated differently and cannot stand if someone is being nasty to her!

I think her main flaw would be being quite impulsive but that serves her purpose of not being manipulative and scheming!

She is not one to cry because of what happened to her, certainly not because she is not loved! She celebrates when she is loved and treasures that person and keeps that person close to her heart, but when she is not loved by a person she still wont look for validation and wont be bothered by them!!

it is my observation and I could be wrong 😊

I think Sai is icon of feminism and hope CVS let her be. I hope they part ways for good. Sai is fresh breath of air in ITV. Just like men say to each other when they break up that “ there are many fish in the water” I think it should be the same for women. Virat already has a fish or I rather call it a dragon waiting at home and Sai can choose whatever she wants. They both can be happy without each other. They can choose someone, stay single or whatever, but stay away from each other. Sai has a lot more to loose because she has very little. Hopefully, Virat will throw his ex out soon with same Swag. Kick his Janu, baba and Omi out with same taunts as Ushamausi. Will see😒

Hey Niki....đŸ€—

Sai is definitely an iconic character in ITV history. For the first time a female character has been shown to be authentic, fierce, independent, having a mind of her own, courageous with a devil-may-care attitude. She does not conform to society's ideals - to be soft-spoken, obedient to elders even if they are wrong, tolerant when abused, to blindly follow husband etc. In many aspects, she is a feminist. I started this show because it was so exhilarating to see her defiance. I realize that her character will definitely inspire a lot of girls to break the chains of patriarchal conditioning.

Having said that, this portayal is still not complete. As if to compensate for that fact that she is moophat and fierce, she is shown to possess extraordinary qualities (to gain more acceptance from the audience). She gets easily attached to people, is utterly selfless in her lack of self-interest, forgives people easily (she prays for the well-being of the Chavan donkeys during the Alta pooja đŸ€Ș). For me, an essential part of feminism is being authentic and acceptance of one's true self. By portraying Sai as a Koh-i-noor, and 22-karat gold-hearted, a woman's standard is still set unrealistically high.

thank you for tagging me.

I think the concept of feminism is changing. It is all about equal rights, or human rights.

Emma Watson has spoken very strongly about this:

"Feminism is equality: politically, culturally, socially, and economically. it's that simple". I love the way she refuses to accept that gender stereotypes are opposing in nature.

We will progress as a society only we move together - men and women. otherwise, there will always be this disconnect like between Virat and Sai.

Vaise, the head of the house is Bhavani Kaku, she makes everyone run to her command. In a weird, twisted way, she is a feminist !! She took on the reigns of the house when her husband died! but ultimately, how she is as a human being, is what she is being judged for. her self preservation took on an ugly egoistic turn!

i generally don't like to associate desi tv with such high ideals. They are running a business. however, the reason why I like Sai's character is she questions the hypocrisy in her husband's house. She questions each and every misdeed that happens. What we are bothered about is, when she comes back, won't her character slide back into 'accepting' the very ideals she opposed from her husband? But that depends on her husband too.

Because we know about KD, we know the future. I look at it this way, Sai fights for her self respect each time, and the marriage is always unstable, but the next generation - her kids, would probably go one step further, maybe the boys of the next generation would be a better version of Virat and Mohit? Isn't that what is the ultimate goal, what values do you leave behind?

No, Sai is not exactly an icon of feminism. But she fights valiantly for her self respect and for the self respect due to Devi Tai and to anyone facing abuse. That is brave enough for me.

Thank you for the beautiful post.

I don’t know whether she is a feminist or not. She is not someone who stands only for women and fights for rights of women in particular. She fights against wrong, injustice. She fought for Mohit also and then Pulkit.

She connects to people because of her no nonsense attitude. I never liked diplomats or hypocrats or people pleasers. I am straightforward and blunt in saying things and Sai is also like that.

She is not superhuman who won’t commit any mistakes. She is a normal young girl with great mental strength and confidence. Such fortitude and strength help in facing the trivialities of life.

Another trait that makes her endearing is her innocence . She is unexposed to outside world and hence that innocence still remained intact in her persona.

I don’t want to limit her to feminist tag. She is more than that. ITV did not present such a charecter as per my knowledge.

I love Sai Joshi ..she is my most loved fictional charecter.
