I disagree with the take that chemistry is related to story and CVs.
Chemistry can’t be created by intent. It just happens . A director can not urge the couple to show chemistry in a scene or underplay it.
Chemistry is what we viewers feel when we see the couple on screen. There need not be any intimacy to feel the chemistry between them.
Even if someone sits on lap it looks thanda..and won’t create ripples or thrill ..but a simple eyelock could pass the thrill to viewers when the couple have chemistry.
Why would CV want to underplay the chemistry in Pakhi dream sequence? It is Pakhi’s dream and so for her they both are in love with each other. So they should show that level of chemistry but they miserably failed to do so.
Chemistry is comfort and understanding of how the other one is going to act in a particular scene.
Ayesha said she knew how Neil would do a scene and so she would react accordingly. That is the understanding between the onscreen couple. Kajol said the same about SRK..I know how he will do she said and added that she will react with that understanding.
Pakhi Virat lack that compatibility and understanding on screen. So however close and intimate they want to act,it won’t reach the viewers properly.
In contrast the dupatta scene firmly establishes the amazing understanding Neil and Ayesha had ..the facial expressions, the closing in with noses touching ,everything fell in place just perfectly. Both did exactly the way it should be done. The comfort level can be felt and the chemistry created not by CV s direction. It is spontaneous.
Remember Agar tum saath ho ( Tamasha) ? Ranbir Deepika got that in them but not Deepika and her real husband !
Chemistry happens and it can not be created by outside factors .
If it is about understanding between onscreen couple, wouldn't Virat and Pakhi have more understanding because they are real life couples too?
When the author of this post asked about why the chemistry between Virat and Pakhi could not be felt even when they are real life couples and how do we see it in Sairat, I gave it a thought and felt story also to play a part. I didn't want to comment on whether the actress looked young or not. I had mentioned how Sai looks young and how I like Neil and Ayesha's chemistry.
However, I had also posted another reply saying, even during the initial days I could see the chemistry between Sai and Virat and their story never began too. I do agree that it is what we feel when we see them on screen.
Sairat's chemistry is because of their characters too. The way they are seen on the screen, that you are talking about, is because of the character they are playing as well. Also, it has got to do with their compatibility, probably even physical compatibility to some extent. Sai looks lot younger than Virat and it looks attractive.
I will have to admit that if Pakhi played the role of Sai, I wouldn't have liked Sairat. But there is a reason why she wasn't chosen as Sai. Her appearance didn't fit well into the character. Pakhi in real life is a bubbly girl and Ayesha is an introvert. But even then Pakhi wasn't chosen as Sai. That's because she cannot be shown as a college girl, she doesn't look like one. No offence to the actress, I am stating how the directors and PH will pick an actor/actress for a role.
And it is this role that we see on screen. Neil and Ayesha might not have looked together in another show that Neil acted like Gulaal or Tum hi bandhu Sakha Tumhi.
When we talk about appearance, Konkona Sen looked good with Kunal in Aaja Nachle, she was playing a role of an yound girl.
The same Konkona Sen looked good with Ranbir Kapoor too, though she looked older and was older than him in the show. How?
Actors are chosen for a role and if those actors are chosen well for a role, fit well into that role, it will help them in achieving the chemistry they are looking for.
