Vicious review
The fantasy genre is extremely new for me considering I have only read Harry Potter (the first 5 books) and Good Omens which I thought was so so. I have read only good reviews about their book and did have certain expectations before I started reading it.
The biggest highlight of the book was the relatively simple writing style. The book didn’t seem complicated to understand and neither was it too absurd to the extent that it was unbelievable. A big reason that has kept me from reading fantasy and sci fi is being worried about not understanding or the story or finding it too outlandish. With Vicious I had no such issues.
The characters are well written and there is enough context given to understand their past situations and where they come from. As characters Victor and Eli were alright, Eli was a better written character between the two. I liked Sydney and Serena Clarke, I felt they had more to offer.
My major complaint with the book is that more than half of it goes in setting up the story and giving the background of the characters. The real fun starts only around the 60% mark.
I don’t think I want to read the second part of the book anytime soon although that is likely to be more fast paced than Vicious.
I’d give this book 3.5 stars. I thought it was a good start to reading the fantasy genre. It will take a lot of good books to get me to like this genre, but this was a start in the right direction.
