Virat was breaking free from his promise (chains)?
Yeah, unconsciously he had broken the promise then only. Also, I think by representing the promise as chains, it shows that if Virat had not broken the promise, then it would have snatched his freedom. It was always a restraint right from the start. Its not a promise that made him happy. It wasn't something he himself wished to follow. He had given it under pressure (not from Pakhi necessarily).
Sai was stuck in the mud water, what does it symbolise/represent?
I am not sure tbh, someone might have a better perspective about this. Maybe it meant grief? Sai already took such a drastic step when Virat left for Nagpur. In a later episode she had confessed that had it not been for Virat, she wouldn't have been able to become a doctor (not just financially). That's my guess.
And him saying, “I’ll never break the promise I made to Pakhi” after breaking free from the chain then what was the chain representing if the promise is still intact?
Like I said, he had already broken the promise unconsciously. At first he was hesitant to marry Sai because that would mean breaking the promise which Virat felt was injustice to Pakhi. When he decided he will marry Sai, I think to avoid feeling guilty, he was trying to comfort himself by saying that just because he is marrying Sai, it does not mean he has to break the promise. He was trying to forge a third path but at the same time he already knew there are only two paths, to marry and break the promise made to Pakhi or to not marry and keep the promise. Even in his dream he was trying to evade the reality because he is Virat Chavan, zyachi Pakki zaban (I hope spelling is right). Whether it was logical or not, the thought of breaking a promise made by him made him guilty.
