First of all, Shaurya this is for you: 🤬💣🔪🏺🏏🏑🏒🏓🥊🩴👞👟🥾🥿👠👡🩰👢📌✂️🔨🪓⛏⚒🛠🗡⚔🪚🔧🥥
I absolutely hated what he said and he deserves some serious gallis, jootes and everything that hurts! Please shower some jhootes and gallis when you reply here.😃
"Bade logon ki choti soch, ek aam baat hain
Khaas baat to tab hogi, jab ek aam ladki ki badi soch inse takaar legi"
This was the tagline of the show, it's very premise. The episode today and the one tomorrow and countless other episodes in the future will be there to highlight the difference in badi vs chotti soch, the difference in ideologies.
Am I disappointed in Shaurya as a character: No.
Am I disappointed in the makers: No.
Was this character butchering: Not according to me.
Was this done for some drama quotient: No.
Am I angry with Shaurya: Yes, very.
Let me explain:
He did not disappoint me as a misogynist character. Trust me, I hate the words he used. But, I am more disappointed in the imaginary portrait that I, and many others, have built of Shaurya. In the past weeks, we've seen sides of him that have made us sympathise and understand him - sides that have made me question the tagline - Is he really a misogynist, I have asked myself this question a lot of times in the past few weeks. And I got my answer today. Yes, he is. And No, he is not going to change so fast, so soon. He was never meant to be Prince charming or a Knight in Shining armor and the episode showed me, he is not. He has a lot to unlearn and re-learn and that will start tomorrow.
Now, how do I blame the makers for this, how do I call this character butchering just to increase drama when the show came with a warning: that the Male Lead is not your typical bad guy with a soft heart who will manhandle the heroine, instead he is a grey character with a "chotti soch" and he will hurt the heroine with his ideologies and beliefs. No wonder we are so repulsed by what we have seen today, but this isn't this what we were promised in the promos?
Of course, I get that we've showered lots of love on Shaurya the past days and so, the Shaurya today is a bitter pill to swallow. However, I've always felt that as much as the soft side is a part of him, this ugly side is a part of him as well, and so, his ugly side will be as ugly, as his soft side is beautiful. His misogyny was never going to be restricted to his attitude about woman unable to balance the home and career, it was always going to lurk and show up through his relations with woman.
I don't know if you guys remember, but when Astha was in hospital and Shaurya went to visit, he mentioned something along the lines of, Astha called Shaan and got herself admitted to such a good hospital with luxurious facilities when she couldn't handle it herself. The belief, and ingrained it is, that working women from humble background would not hesitate to leave their family for their career, but when in financial difficulty those women would cling on the same family for support was there, loud and clear. It was a similar situation today but was made more potent with his choice of words. He knows that Anokhi is an achiever and has an intense desire for being educated and following her dreams, however, he also thinks that she is trying to keep a back up in the form of rich man.
His jealousy was there, obviously, but it was not the reason why he said the things he did. He spewed the nonsense because he believed in them. His jealousy was only a catalyst for him to reveal his true side.
The motive of this post is not to justify Shaurya, but simply to show that he has always been like that. He has been socialised like that from a very young age, the belief and attitude he holds towards woman has been inculcated in him, by his family, and it's surfacing now. A major part of what we become in later life is due to our socialisation period, where values and norms become a part of our psyche and prompt us to behave in the way we do.
It's interesting that both of our leads are part of very patriarchal households, but one chose to rebel, while the other chose to accept and perpetuate. The difference though, is in mentality - shaped by society and the immediate environment. And this is what the show is about, I believe. Just like Astha has been the light in Anokhi's life, and has been a part of her socialisation process. The lightstick has been passed. So, now it is Anokhi who will be the light to his ugly side and will be part of his re-socialisation process which will lead to a change in his belief system. Anokhi will not be his rehab centre, but instead would be the mirror that he needed. She will not heal him, she will show him how to heal himself.
