Exclusive! Karan Singh Grover: I was very angry with myself when I got Covid, but the recovery was smooth

The past year has been all things productive for Karan Singh Grover. From earning massive praise for his performance on OTT to pursuing his passion for painting during lockdown and after having recovered from Covid, the actor took off to Maldives to celebrate his birthday. In an exclusive interaction with ETimes, Karan Singh Grover got all chatty and spilled the beans on working with wife Bipasha Basu, speculations of a baby and his recovery from Covornavirus among other things.

On his recovery from Covid

I was very angry with myself when I got the virus. I often say things that I later regret and I went around saying that I am the anti-virus, and when I got the virus I was like why do you have to say stuff? As for the recovery, every person reacts to everything differently. I couldn't smell for three days and that was the only symptom that I had. I was told not to work out for sometime so for Bipasha’s sanity I didn’t work out for sometime, not because I couldn’t but just so that she doesn’t get stressed. Now I am back to doing everything and the recovery was smooth.

On his birthday celebration in Maldives

We usually try to celebrate our birthday in Maldives. Last year it couldn’t happen but this time we made sure to take off to Maldives. Bipasha gifted me another very beautiful and expensive watch on my birthday. I think every year by buying these expensive watches, she tells me that I should be on time. There is a lot of money paid to tell me that. Anyway there is this Basu fire, which got ignited when I met her. So, basically everybody in her family is always like ready and on time. And Basu fire is basu fire, it is behind me all the time!

On rumours of Bipasha being pregnant

We are so vocal and we share our love so openly and proudly that whenever there is a little monkey running around, everyone will know! It is just natural progression that people fall in love, get married and then after a few years they have a baby. And if you don’t have a baby then people start speculating that you must have a baby. Whenever ours happens, we will let everyone know, till then you can keep speculating.

On doing web seriesfor OTT platforms

I am very grateful for all the love that I am receiving. Everything is becoming digital and I think it got more of a boost because the whole world was shut. That's a good thing for the audience because everyone wants some sort of content and I am also one of them. And OTT is good for actors also because there's lots of work.

On working again with Bipasha Basu

No, after ‘Dangerous’ there is nothing. I would love to work with her all the time but I don't think she wants to work with me. She loves me in everything and seen me every day and every night. So I think she would like not have me sit on her head while she's working, so I guess that’s why. We have responsibility towards everyone who loves us and we try out best to our best. I don’t think she wants to work with me again! If I was living with myself for 24/7 then maybe even I would want to take a break.

On OTT censorship

Entertainment is entertainment and fiction is fiction! And reality is reality. If you can tell the difference between fiction and reality, then you should just be letting people get entertained the way they want. People are making such rules for a higher good maybe, but I don't think it helps anybody, the restrictions that we put and the reasons for those restrictions. Unfortunately everything said becomes a controversy. I'm saying that this time is given to us for making ourselves better in every way and not regressing.

On box office success

Box office is very important for me personally, but it's important for everybody in this industry. I have been ignorant in the past and said that doesn’t make a difference to me but I think it makes a difference to everyone involved in the process of making a movie. And at the end of the day, yeah, the audience is not looking at the box office because they saw the film, web show and took a feeling with them, which is what they wanted. This is an encouragement for the makers. Box office is important, no matter what part you play in filmmaker, it affects everyone.

I went arouns saying I am the Antu virus--- Exactly a Karan thing

As Karan Singh Grover and Surbhi Jyoti are gearing up to bring their show, Qubool Hai, once again to the audience as Qubool Hai 2.0, we spoke to KSG about the show and his experience of shooting it again

Qubool Hai 2.0: Karan Singh Grover Reveals, 'Surbhi And I Remembered Dialogues Of Our Very First Scene Even After 8 Years'- EXCLUSIVEKaran Singh Grover and Surbhi Jyoti starrer Qubool Hai 2.O is all set to stream on ZEE5 soon. The show not just became popular eight years back but also gained immense fan following for Karan and Surbhi as Asad and Zoya.

And now, before we witness their sizzling chemistry once again, we got talking with Karan Singh Grover about his comeback and more. Here's what all he revealed to us:

How does it feel to play Asad again?

I was really very excited. This character is close to my heart. And I have worked really hard for it but loved playing it.

Did you find any difficulty in playing the same character after a gap of 8 years?

Not at all. Actually this character was always with me and when they approached me for Qubool Hai 2.0, it wasn't difficult because it's built in me just like a few things that you never forget in your life. It stayed with me forever.

The show was launched 8 years back and had a successful run of four years. What according to you has made this show so popular?

I think the creator of Qubool Hai, Gul Khan, who actually created the show and the characters. The skill and level of creation Gul has is unmatched. She is very good at what she does. She keeps learning new things all the time and evolving everyday. Along with that, the hard work which Surbhi, the entire team and I invested in it, helped the show to reach where it reached.

Gul is not the part of the series this time. How much did you miss her?

We missed her a lot. It was like things felt quite incomplete without her. Afterall, she is the actual creator of the show.

Qubool Hai is best remembered for your and Surbhi's love chemistry but this time we see thriller portion has been added to it. You feel audience will like it?

That was made in 2013 and right now we are in 2021. Meanwhile, the audience has seen great range and varieties of content. They have evolved in what they watch and what they do. And it's not something that is experimental. This will add more to Asad and Zoya and their story.

How do you feel about the fan following which Asad and Zoya still enjoy?

I feel really blessed and we are very lucky to have so much unconditional love from everyone. It's like our fans never left us and the show didn't go anywhere and we are once again back together. I am actually very grateful to the people who gives us so much of love all the time.

How was your experience shooting in Serbia?

The temperature was around 2 degrees. Some Days it also went to zero degrees also. It was bone chilling cold and because we live in Mumbai we are not habituated to such weather. So, it was crazy because I used to wear layers of warmers inside my pants and shirts. Like I was wearing two pants and two shirts. Although Surbhi deserves an award because she had shot like so many days in that off shoulder wedding costume. She is strong. Shooting was a task but when you see the frame and the shots, it's totally worth it.

Is OTT Karan Singh Grover's comfortable space now?

I am comfortable with the fact that audience are constantly watching me. Wherever it is, it's fine with me. Everything is now becoming digital. All the channels have their own digital platforms. We are moving towards it from a very long time and finally it's happening. I think it has got the boost because of pandemic also. As long as artist I get to perform and tell the story and people are watching, platform really doesn't matter to me.

Where will we see you next?

I have some projects lined up but can't disclose about that at the moment. But yaa it also has Qubool Hai's next season which we will start in few months.

Content on digital space is very debatable. Do you feel showing bold scenes and using crux language is okay?

I feel there is really great content being made now. I really enjoyed watching shows like Mirzapur, Sacred Games. And for those who feel that this content is not apt, you always have an option to not watch. You can watch something else. If we would live in a perfect world where we could only watch stuff that gives joy and raise our vibrations and don't show the actual reality of the world where people are killing, saying and doing bad things, may be living in that scenario would be great but I don't think it's possible.

Any of the scene from Qubool Hai which you still remember?

We actually did a few from the original one in this one. But the first where Asad and Zoya meet, where she falls down and Asad's car is going around in a circle, which we shot at Filmcity, we did the same scene in Serbia for 2.0. Surbhi and I knew the dialogues too. When we started shooting for the scene, she started saying her dialogues and I started saying mine without any rehearsal. In fact, we remembered each other's dialogues also. With every moment we knew the line we have to say and our director was like kya tum log reharse karke aaye ho? And we were like haan 2013 mein reharse kiya tha (laughs). That scene was so ingrained in us that it didn't even take seconds to recollect everything.

Post Qubool Hai, Karan Singh Grover wishes to have Dill Mill Gayye’s sequel10 Mar, 2021 - 07:08 PM IST | By Dharini Sanghavi

MUMBAI: There is a sudden trend of iconic TV shows returning with its sequel in series format. One of the popular and much-loved shows Qubool Hai which aired on Zee TV has returned with a new season on ZEE5.

The 856 episodes show that had become a staple on every Indian small screen for almost four years will now spur its magic on your smart screens and will kick in the nostalgia especially among fans who’ve missed the camaraderie of Karan and Surbhi, their banter and the hard-to-unnoticed chemistry.

The series continues to star popular actors Karan Singh Grover and Surbhi Jyoti in the lead roles while this time the project is being helmed by Mrinal Jha under her banner NAJ Productions.

Karan Singh Grover is one of the actors who has impressed masses by playing varied roles in each of his projects. His one of the characters and shows which is still being missed by fans is his character of Dr Armaan in the show Dill Mill Gayye. And guess what Karan himself misses the show and wants it to return with a sequel.

In an exclusive chat with TellyChakkar, when asked to Karan post Kasautii Zindagi Kay and Qubool Hai, which of his previous show should return with a sequel, he replied, “It will be so much fun if Dill Mill Gayye returns with a sequel. It should return in a series format like Qubool Hai. The new season on OTT centred about doctors will be something that viewers will look forward to. It will be much authentic. Talking about the star cast, well I am not the one who can take that call but I hope to have Dr Shubhankar played by Ayaz Khan being part of it.”

We hope makers are reading it!

One of the most iconic roles Karan Singh Grover played on screen is Asad Ahmed Khan in Zee TV's daily soap Qubool Hai. Now after nearly eight years, the handsome hunk is reprising his role for ZEE5 original web series Qubool Hai 2.0. With this show, Karan is reuniting with Surbhi Jyoti who is reprising her role as Zoya Farooqui in the web show. Ahead of the streaming, we caught up with KSG for a chat where the actor spoke at length about playing Asad again, another role of his he would like to reprise. Karan also described his 17-year journey as an actor and praised Ekta Kapoor for launching him.

Excerpts...

Qubool Hai 2.0 is not a continuation of the TV series but is the character sketch similar to what you played earlier?

It's the same character with the same backstory and the same family. The only difference is that there he was into architecture and civil engineering in that as a profession and this is he is a world champion shooter. This is the reason why he gets picked up by RAW for a particular mission. Like it's in a different universe, Zoya's character is also the same. Her backstory is changed a little bit, her family is changed.

Was it easier or difficult to get back into the same character after a very long time?

Some people might call it, we call it a pro, or a con, it's that I put in a lot of hard work into creating Asad when we first made the show. There's a lot of hard work that I had to do because the character is very different from mine. He is the opposite and is very minimalistic in his expressions, his movements and everything that he does. So there I was like full veiling training that I put into it. The thing is, Asad was always with me, the characters that I really put myself into this stay with me, it's very unhealthy. It's a very heavy character, uske rooh pe bohot wajan hai because of his childhood, so emotionally, it's not a good thing to carry some weight around. But he's always been there. So getting into him was not a problem at all. I'm probably sounding crazy because I'm talking about him as a separate person. I am not really a good actor, I have to be the director when I'm portraying it, otherwise, it feels fake to me and then that will show up. I fear that my audiences see that I'm faking it, it's very unhealthy. But works for me as a profession.

How was it reuniting with Surbhi Jyoti after these many years?

We have been in touch on and off. It was not on an everyday basis as she always been a friend. Firstly, it didn't feel like we are shooting after eight years. It felt like we met yesterday and we shot now, it's the same. You just have that with some people with friends especially.

When you were offered the web series, what was your instant reaction, were you excited to play the iconic character again?

When I first got a call, it was from Gul Khan, she's spoken to me about Qubool Hai 2.0. When we finally began the whole process, she was not a part of i. I was very happy that I got to play Asad again. I was even happier with the fact that it's in a different universe in a different scenario. There are tons of changes, a few things that add an edge adds a few dimensions to it. Everything about it was exciting.

You have been a part of all three mediums be it TV shows, web and movies too. Is there any difference during the shooting process?

From an actor's point of view, there's no change. As I said, I have to portray a character and tell a story, which medium it is on, the art process doesn't change. Especially all of us who have come from the college of television, we had on the job training. I had no acting experience and there are a lot of people who are new acting who are put into Balaji school of training, shooting nonstop for 24 hours, 72 hours, and you have to get it right no matter what. So that kind of has made us, we can adapt, we can overcome, we can improvise anything at any time. No matter how long the scene is, we don't need time to get into character to do something. Thankfully, I was put into that in the beginning only in fact, training has helped me so much. When I am shooting for a film there's a lot of pre and post discussions, readings and more, which is very good. That is how actually the process should be. But we were trained to like shoot 18 minutes of footage every day and after the break, we didn't know which scene we have to shoot because woh scene aaya nahi abhi tak. People who are not from television are like, 'Are you guys insane?' There's no prep time. 'Dude, We were born during prep time. Our prep time is every second of the day, so we are ready. But the process of an actor's shooting for any kind of medium doesn't change the thing for me.

You have been a part of the entertainment industry for many years, apart from Asad, if you get a chance which other character you would like to reprise?

Yes, Dr Armaan from Dill Mill Gayye! I don't know why is that even a question, you knew the answer (laughs). Armaan is like me, that's fun. It was a fun show to shoot. We were like friends and classmates having fun.

height: 360px; width: 640px;

How was the whole shoot experience as you entirely shot in Serbia for a long schedule?

I knew before going to Serbia how cold it is going to be but you don't really know. We live in Bombay and when I am not in Bombay, I'm on the beach. We're not used to the cold at all, but I need the air conditioning on. Otherwise, I'm in the open, I'm fine. We knew how cold it was going to be but you don't really know what that cold is like till you get there. It was bone-chilling cold, it was like two degrees some days, some days zero degrees. I was like, 'what's the temperature', so they said 'Zero' What does that mean? You have no temperature. Like today, there is no temperature, it's zero. Due to the whole COVID thing, there are so many things that get added. I've had timetables, my whole day starts from the time I wake up at 5 am. So my whole routine is quite ritualistic and there's a lot that COVID has added to it now. During the whole cleansing and wearing the mask, we took all precautions and that was mandatory. But still, two days before the shoot ended, I got COVID-19, but a lot of people on our set got it. Even though they're only 10 people on the set.

Going by your work, you have been an actor for nearly 17 years now. If you look back, how would you describe your journey as a whole?

Wow that you have mentioned, I don't think I have done much, I can do more. So we'll work on that. But I've been very lucky. Staring with Ekta Kapoor, she's a great creator, she knows what she's doing. She has an eye for the present, past and future. So being selected by her at that time, and then getting to work with her again in the new version of this show that I did in Kasautii Zindagii Kay. Then I did Dill Mill Gayye as Dr Armaan, then Qubool Hai, the films till now. I've had really nice, good roles and good characters that I played with great people around me, a great environment. So in all, I think it's been a really good learning process. Now that I think of it, I could have done a lot more, maybe some reality shows, I assume. It's been a good life.
