If you don’t make an effort to socialise with the big bosses, or go for drinks on a Friday night and just do your 9-5 and leave, good luck getting that promotion. It has always been this way. Corporate world or entertainment industry. He thought it’s just talent that gets you places in life?

But aren't socializing/being cordial and bribing/using power two entire different things? I have many friends/relatives working at places like PwC, Wipro, Goldman etc. all in top positions but none of them have had to go out of their way socializing for major promotions. It was all based on work ethic. I don't know if things work differently outside india though.

But grammys fkd up majorly with no nominations for the weekend.

It’s not about being cordial, that should go without saying. As much as I hate it, schmoozing is a part and parcel of jobs these days. I don’t see how this is any different to going on holiday and bringing something back for the team/the boss. It’s all about who you know and how well you use those connections. Let’s see how that changes with the WFH culture. Socialising is very much a part of promotions and working your way up. Otherwise all the “hard workers” would be in top positions. Work hard, but work smart.

Actually in those kind of industries it’s important who knows you and not whom you know. Kinda like everybody knows the CEO of Citibank, but does the CEO of Citibank knows you?

Once you get to a certain position, it’s no longer about work ethics, it’s about how you position yourself and how you are recognised by the management.

Everybody can be smart, talented, and loyal; working years in the same company and give their life. But there is a big difference between someone who works for 25 years and become the senior management, and someone who works for 25 years and just middle management. It’s not always necessarily because of their work ethics, but someone they know.

Bang on. And I say this from experience (i’ve been on both sides and had completely different experiences). If you are “in” with management, you will find it SO much easier to get that promotion/raise. Life will always be easier if they’re on your side, and sadly that doesn’t just happen by saying “boss, I stayed up till 12 and finished that task you gave me” I mean, congrats. So did 80% of the team 🤷🏽‍♀️
