Chapter 6
Shaurya knew that she wouldn’t budge so long as she saw that he was standing there. In case she thought that he was lying, he began to walk back towards campus, muttering under his breath about what a pain she was.
“She always has to get her way. Never thinks about what she is saying or who the person standing in front of her is. Or why they are telling her to drop it. She just does whatever she wants.” He complained to no one in particular. What was he doing in the middle of the night talking to himself?
“She’s crazy and she’s turning me crazy too.” He kept moving, just to put a bit of distance such that if she checked to see if he was there, he wouldn’t be seen. But not so much that he wouldn’t be able to get to her should something go wrong.
“Now because of Ms. Bhalla, I’m stuck here.” He paced back and forth for a while. The whole time he was doing nothing but singing Anokhi’s praises for trapping him in this predicament in the middle of the night, for making life so difficult for him, and for somehow finding a way into his heart.
He finally decided that enough time had passed that she probably would have grown tired of waiting. Perhaps his departure had given her the answers that she had been looking for. He called the warden of the girl’s hostel to see if Anokhi had gone back and she informed him that the girl hadyet to return for the night. Immediately his mind went to the worst-case scenario. The logical part of him knew that it was improbable that something actually happened to her, given that he was in close enough proximity to have heard a scuffle. But Shaurya couldn’t help but immediately worry. His steps grew quickly towards the spot he had left her, internally cursing himself for trying to prove a point. If anything happened to her…
When he arrived at the bend in the road where their paths had diverged, he couldn’t believe the sight in front of him. Planted in the middle of the road was the tiny woman who had an attitude as large as Mount Everest. And what was she doing? Sitting cross legged, she had her textbook propped open on her knee, studying with her phone light. He stared at her in astonishment for a moment, truly amazed at the extent to which she was willing to go to prove apoint. Shaurya approached her with an expression of disbelief.
“What…what are you doing Anokhi?” She looked up, a highlighter between her teeth. There was no sign of surprise at seeing him there or even triumph. In fact, she looked as though she was expecting him. She began to talk, her words a garbled mess because of the object blocking her mouth. Removing it, she proceeded to answer.
“I have an exam tomorrow. Remember sir? I’m studying.” Shaurya let out an exasperated huff at her obvious answer. Of course, he could see that!
“Unbelievable. Is this where you plan to study, huh? Here,” he put his hands out, motioning to the deserted road. “In the middle of theroad?” Anokhi merely shrugged, unfazed by his frustration. “Anokhi, have you gone mad? Get up.”
“I already told you that I’m not moving until you answer my questions.” Shaurya scoffed, deciding in that moment that in a game of stubbornness, no one could beat out Ms. Anokhi Bhalla. She went back down to reading her notes, nonchalant as ever.
Anokhi did not plan to back away this time. She felt like she was on the edge of a real breakthrough with this man. Yes, she knew that he would come but it was still a victory that he proved her right. It validated her other theory that maybe her feelings weren’t so one-sided. Granted, she needed more than a hunch to confirm that, but she was on the path to doing so. Anokhi peeked up at Shaurya to see if he was planning to speak, instantly looking back down at her book when she found him glaring.
He turned away from her and she watched his back, wondering if he was going to pretend to walk away again. Instead, he just ran a hand through his hair in frustration and she failed to suppress a smile at his behavior. What was so difficult to say that he would rather spend his whole night fighting with her than just answering a few simple questions? When he turned, she quickly diverted her eyes back to her notes, pretending to be fully focused on her work.
“Fine, what? What do you want to know?” His tone was clearly agitated but his words were conciliatory. He didn’t want to play anymore games and Shaurya knew that if he was to put this chapter behind them, he’d have to answer her questions.
Anokhi observed him for a moment, trying to decide whether he was genuinely ready to answer her or was just trying to placate her. Choosing to give him the benefit of the doubt, Anokhi closed her textbook and put it back in her bag. She was pretty much done with the chapter she needed to revise anyways. She was about to get up when the mischevious side of her decided to irk her short-tempered professor a little bit more. So instead, she extended her arm up at him for him to help her stand. Shaurya scoffed at her audacity, but eventually acquiesced. Lacing his hand around her's, he pulled her up, while Anokhi hid her smile from him. After dusting herself off, she gave him her full attention.
“Okay, first question. Why are you walking me home?” Anokhi began, choosing to give him the easiest of the bunch to start.
“Because I’m crazy,” he responded with a roll of his eyes, and she shook her head, unwilling to accept the answer.
“If you’re going to be sarcastic, I’ll just go back to studying.” She threatened, already bending to sit back down to which he pressed his palms together to stop her.
“Please Ms. Bhalla, for god’s sake, don’t start your sit-in again.” She was bemused by his agitated expression. She cleared her throat to hide a chuckle and to regain focus on the interrogation. In the moment, she was clearly enjoying being the one in control, asking all the questions. “Your answer?” He paused for a second, trying to choose what to say carefully.
“It’s late and you’re a trouble magnet.” He offered, and Anokhi decided that was passable. He was never going to explicitlysay that it was because he cared for her.
“An incomplete answer, but okay, I'll take it.” Shaurya narrowed his eyes at the way she was imitating the way he was when he reviewed exam answers with her. Seriously, the nerve of this woman. Though he knew that it was this very nerve that drew him to her, like a moth to aflame. A very tiny, but powerful, flame.
“Next question,” she continued while he tapped his foot impatiently, wondering when this inquisition would end and when he would go home. “Why have you been avoiding me?” Shaurya took a sharp breath in, again allowing his frustration with the situation color the answer.
“Because you irritate me, Ms. Bhalla.” Anokhi, still unbothered by the bite in his voice, shook her head at the answer. Not because it was sarcastic but because it didn’t answer the question properly.
“You were irritated with me from the start sir. But you never avoided me then. So why now?” Shaurya should have known better than to try and win a war of words with his star student. She had an answer to everything and stood her ground fiercely. Even now, she was staring expectantly, waiting for a response that she’d deem logical and correct. He hesitated to give the right answer, and Anokhi was perceptive enough to catch on. She suspected the answer anyways.
“No problem. I’ll give you the answer to this one. It’s because I told you that I have feelings for you, right?” Shaurya refused to deny or accept her response but Anokhi didn’t need his affirmation. She knew she was right on this matter. It didn’t take being a topper to realize that she caught him off guard. And for just a moment she worried that maybe she was making him uncomfortable, not because he had to reckon with his feelings for her, but because he had to reckon with how to let her down easy. Though she had been completely confident a second ago, as the moment of truth approached, Anokhi found herself doubting whether she was right or not.
Shaurya noticed that her questions stopped and began to study her. He could see the dilemma in her eyes and knew that her next inquiry would be about a week ago and his feelings for her. Because that was where this line of questioning was leading them. Which was why Shaurya also knew that when she asked, when those eyes of hers shone with anticipation, he would have to stay strong and vehemently deny the truth. He would have to hide his heart, like he always did before her.
“Why did you ignore my confession?” The otherwise self-assured tone was muted by a twinge of self-doubt. Enough for Shaurya to pick up on and enough to tempt him to falter for a second. Why should he break the heart of the woman who was in his? Why did he always have to maintain this decorum?Hadn’t he decided he would allow himself to enjoy his time with her? Did he have to give it such a harsh deadline? Again, his eyes found hers and they didn’t want to leave. All his answers were in those eyes. And for Anokhi, all the answers she sought were in his.
“Because I don’t feel the same.” He responded a beat too late and a touch too unconvincingly. She saw the truth reflected clearly in the way his voice lightly trembled before stabilizing. She caught his lie when he stole his eyes away from her before speaking. The confidence that had slightly faded was back when she got the answer she wanted.
“You’re lying.” She professed boldly, causing him to look back at her with confusion. She had proven her hypothesis a while ago that she was not just another student to him. He had come after her three times that night, despite repeatedly pushing her away. She just hadn't known if he just had a soft corner for her or if it was more than that. Now she was assured it was the latter.
“What? What are you saying?” This was not the response he was expecting though at this point, she should have come with a disclaimer ‘expect the unexpected from me.’ How did she always know when to call his bluff? How had she correctly identified that he had been lying?
Anokhi gave him a cryptic smile and shrugged. Shaurya Sabherwal was still a complicated man that she hadn’t fully figured out. But in the time that she had gotten to know him, she had understood that he often said the opposite of what he felt. He was a master at denial and often ran from emotions that he didn’t like. So, when he said he didn’t care, that undoubtedly meant he did. When he demanded to be left alone, he was searching for someone who’d refuse to do so. Shaurya sir, who’ll save you from me now? She thought to herself with a grin.
“You know what Anokhi,” he began, unsettled by her sudden silence and calm demeanor. Again, he felt like a lab subject under her discerning gaze. Anokhi merely raised a brow, curious to see how he’d try and weasel his way out of this one.
“You don’t want to go right? You want to sit and study? Fine, I’ll also sit with you. Let’s both stay here all night!” His frustration had reached its peak and Anokhi failed to hide her amusement at Shaurya’s temper tantrum. He looked at her with incredulity that she would think this was a joke.
"Sorry, sorry," She said between laughs, elated by the realization she had just come to. Anokhi decided that right now, whatever he did would look cute to her. Because if he had been treating her like a child minutes ago, now he was acting like one. She pressed a finger to her lip to stop her giggles and shook her head before he could sit, relieving him of his chaperon duties for the night.
“It’s okay sir, let's go.” It was unlike her to relent so easily, especially when she had claimed he was lying. He didn’t want to imagine what she had understood from the answers he gave her. Maybe she was constructing some false narrative in her head. Though it wouldn’t be false...it might actually be the truth. Shaurya watched her cautiously as she began to walk the remaining short distance to her hostel, keeping a few steps behind her lest she choose to turn student-cum-lawyer again. They reached her building and she called for the warden, apologizing profusely on the phone for the delay. The woman was headed down, and Anokhi turned around to face Shaurya.
“Thank you sir,” she expressed softly. He could only wonder if she had two personalities. The thug who threatened everyone until she got her way and the angel who sweetly made people forget her aggressive side. He gave a nod in response, daring not to say anything that could trigger another round of questioning. Whatever she was thinking, after this night, he would go back to ignoring her existence.
As the gate opened Anokhi lingered for a moment, shifting between leaving and staying before finally turning to go. He watched her as he promised himself, thankful that after such an eventful walk, she finally was home safe. He was going to leave as well when she suddenly bounded back to him.
“Sir, I’ll come see you after my exam tomorrow.” Shaurya had no idea what to make of her assertion. What more could she possibly have to talk to him about?
“And don’t try disappearing or avoiding me again. You know how stubborn I get when I want something.” She gave him a thousand watts smile before rushing back into the hostel to avoid being scolded by her warden. Shaurya stood baffled at her forthrightness and the predicted his intentions. He lingered for a few moments before heading back, more conflicted than he had started. Anokhi decided that even if he couldn’t express his feelings for her, it didn’t mean that they couldn’t have more midnight walks or casual encounters. She had gotten the confirmation she sought that night and with time, she’d get him to confess what she now knew. He loved her too.
This is the last chapter! I hope you all enjoyed the journey and their midnight walk as much as I enjoyed writing it. Thank you for reading this story and giving it so much love 🤗
