Chapter 5
He was taken aback by the compliment and the loving expression with which she looked at him. She always managed to render him speechless with her words, saying whatever she wanted when he least expected it. And he was reminded of all the reasons that he tried to avoid her. It was too easy to lose himself when he was around her. Despite his best intentions, she managed to get under his skin and break the barriers around his heart. Instantly the playful mood was gone, and his smile fell, replaced by the usual frown he wore.
“I don’t need to smile. I’m fine how I am,” he retorted, refusing to accept the compliment. He fortified the walls behind which he was guarding his heart, unwilling to let her words break his resolve. Otherwise, she'd find another way of throwing his mind into choas when he least expected.
Anokhi was disappointed that he was back to putting distance between them. Things had been going so well. They were talking normally, bickering like always and even laughing together. Why did he have to ruin things by being rude to her? Maybe it was her fault for speaking out of turn. But did she have to be so cautious? Around him of all people? Never before had she hesitated or thought twice prior to speaking her mind to him. Nor did she want to. She did not wish to second guess everything she said in case it would turn his mood off.
“Why do you do that?” She started quietly, her own curiosity, paired with her dismay at how their peaceful moment quickly devolved, compelling her to question him. Anokhi initially told herself she wasn’t going to get into this tonight, but her bad habit of speaking her mind when Shaurya was before her flared again. Shaurya purposefully played dumb, as though he had no idea what she was referring to.
“Anytime I compliment you, you always become cold. Why? You did this that night too.” Anokhi knew the second she said it that she shouldn’t have brought up that night. His behavior had taken a full 180 since she told him how she felt. He was instantly transported back to a week ago when she told him all the things she liked about him before confessing that she, in fact, liked him. She could sense Shaurya immediately tense up at the mere mention of the night of the Cultural Fest. It had been a moment like the one they were just having, where inhibitions were low and spirits, high.
“Ms. Bhalla I already told you, I don’t have time or patience for your nonsense tonight.” His voice raised in register, hoping that they could put this matter to rest without addressing it at all.
“It’s not nonsense! Why are you calling someone else’s feelings nonsense?” Anokhi matched his anger this time, annoyed that he was painting her to be some sort of kid who didn’t understand her own emotions or what he was doing. As if she couldn’t recognize him purposefully pushing her away!
“Because that’s what they are. You’re a student, right? Focus on your studies.” Anokhi rolled her eyes because he always did this. When he didn't have a good answer to her questions, he redirected the conversation to her classwork or her studies. Right now he sounded extremely paternalistic, like a parent lecturing a schoolchild about how anything other than work would become a distraction. Where she respected his reservations, he was completely dismissing her instead.
“First, I’m still the best in your class so clearly I haven’t stopped ‘focusing on my studies.’” She put air quotes around the latter half the sentence, mimicking him. “Second, you’re trying to change the topic. Tell me why you always close up when I compliment you. Or why you’ve been ignoring me for the past week. And if you were going to ignore me, why you insisted on accompanying me home.” She was unrelenting, throwing all the right questions at him in quick succession. Shaurya closed his eyes for a moment, pressing his temples to regain composure. If he got too riled up, he would do or say something that he'd later regret.
“Anokhi, stop this. I’m not arguing with you. Let’s go.” He starting to walk again, purposefully evading her words. But Anokhi was never one to give up and right now, she was unwilling to drop the matter. So, she caught up to him and blocked his path.
“No sir, first answer me. Why are you walking me back at midnight instead of just going home?” She had an answer to her own question, but she wanted to hear it from him. The temper Shaurya had controlled was rising yet again because she knew precisely how to push a man to the edge of his patience.
“Anokhi, move,” he directed firmly, but she shook her head, extending her arms to her side to block him from stepping around her. His gaze bore into her, his anger apparent in the curt order. What was he supposed to answer when the truth was something he refused to accept? One he couldn’t accept, especially in front of her.
“Stop being stubborn and let’s go! Did you forget that you have an exam tomorrow?” She practically scoffed at his deflection tactic. Anokhi knew she would finish her exam well because acing tests was what she did best. What she didn’t know was how to crack Shaurya Sabherwal. Yet she felt that if she let him go today, this conversation would never happen. He would find more ways to avoid her and she’d never get clear answers to why he behaved this way only with her.
“I didn’t forget anything. You’re the one who conveniently forgets things.” She taunted, reminding him that he was the one who ignored her confession, not the other way around. He let out a sigh, pinching the bridge of his nose if only to avoid her piercing gaze.
“That’s why you’ve been avoiding me right?” Anokhi persisted, not having another good explanation for why he was behaving like this with her. She wasn't sure yet of his feelings for her. All she knew was that whenever she managed to capture his eye, it seemed like he didn’t want to look away either.
“Listen, Anokhi. It’s late and I’m tired. So just drop this, okay?” His voice was unusually calm as he attempted to pacify her one last time. He tried to walk around her again, but she kept adjusting her stance such that he couldn’t. The constant back and forth ended with the pair standing in middle of the road at midnight arguing like two children.
“No. I’m not leaving until you answer my questions. So, unless you plan to go to the girl’s hostel by yourself, I’d start talking.” Shaurya never understood where she got the audacity to talk to him as though she were his professor and he was her student, not the other way around. Who was she to demand answers from him? He looked around in pure exasperation, not daring to look at the object of both his desire and irritation.
“You aren’t going to move right?” He began, giving her one last chance to change her mind. She shook her head vehemently, crossing her arms in defiance.
“Fine, stay here all night!” He advanced dangerously close before uttering his final lie at her coldly.
“I don’t give a damn.” Meeting her glare with one of his own, Shaurya waited a few seconds before he turned around to leave, deciding that he was not about to fight this girl. He should never have offered to walk her back in the first place. He should have known something like this would happen. She never understood when to stop talking and he knew that about her. So really, there was no one to blame but himself. Shaurya threw one last glance over his shoulder to see if she had any intention of relenting but Anokhi stood squarely where he left her. Fine, if she was stubborn, he could be just as stubborn.
Anokhi stayed true to her word and did not move an inch even when he turned to leave. She might not have known how he felt about her for sure or what was going on in that complicated mind of his, but she was sure of one thing. Shaurya would never abandon her in the middle of the night, no matter how angry he was. It was with that confidence that she silently called his bluff when he gave her one final look.
Hope you all enjoyed the update! Even I didn't expect their midnight walk to devolve into a fight but when can these two kids keep from yelling at each other anyways 😆
