Enjoyed reading, thanks for the update.

eventually he'll do what Anokhi wants but first he has to at least pretend like he's the one in control 😂😂😂 otherwise people will wonder who is the professor and who is the student 🤔

Thanks so much for reading ❤️

Chapter 4

Anokhi Bhalla was an infuriating woman but in that moment, his car was even more infuriating. How could the whole world conspire against one man? Why else would she be the student to come back to campus so late? Why would she want to walk on this particular day? And why else would his car choose today to stop working? Shaurya didn’t believe in karma, but if he did, he’d swear he was being punished for just trying to be a decent person. Granted, his concern wasn’t borne purely out of civic virtue. Hitting the steering wheel with the heel of his palm in frustration, he forcefully opened his own door and got out. Because whether the universe was on his side or not, Shaurya couldn’t let her go on her own.

The optimistic part of Anokhi said that he would come after her because she wasn’t just another student to him. But the practical side of her said that he’d think he did his level best and let her walk alone. Initially she purposefully loitered, taking her sweet time to give him a chance to appear behind her. But as her hope that he’d appear diminished, her pace quickened. Perhaps she was being a fool, reading feelings into his kindness. With a dejected sigh, Anokhi assumed that this experiment was a failure, only to catch the sound of an additional pair of footsteps. Her brow knit together in confusion and she turned around with hopeful anticipation. And there he stood, hands stuffed in his pockets, lips contorted into a scowl.

Shaurya sheepishly looked around, purposefully trying toavoid her eye and the bright smile she wore. “What?” He asked gruffly, trying to regain control of the situation and keep her from asking questions. “You wanted to walk right? So why are you stopping now?”

“Sir, you’re walking with me?” Anokhi asked, verifying if what she was seeing was really true. Did he really plan to come with her?

“No Ms. Bhalla, I always walk around the streets of Chandigarh at midnight,” he rolled his eyes and began to walk again. Anokhi didn’t let his attitude get to her. She was elated that her prickly professor was joining her on the trip back to her hostel. She continued to walk backwards, enjoying his presence before her while trying to read his expression to confirm her suspicions. Kuch toh hai, she thought to herself, more confident now that she wasn’t fooling herself allthat much.

“Can you walk normally?” Shaurya complained, feeling like a criminal under the watchful gaze of a police officer. He knew that further embroiling himself with Anokhi was a terrible idea. “Otherwise, you’ll definitely fall. And who’ll have to handle you? Me. So please,” he motioned forher to turn around.

“Okay. But sir, why are you,” before she could finish her question, he cut her off by putting his hand up.

“Let’s just walk in silence.” He requested, not having the answer to the question he knew she wished to ask. Anokhi nodded, choosing to pick her battles. The man who had been ignoring her for the past week not only broke his vow of silence but was also accompanying her tonight. She chose to take her win for the day. Shaurya was surprised as he expected her to claim how free speech was her Constitutional right. Rather she fell into step beside him, humming softly to herself in happiness.

Minutes passed and there was something peaceful about the moment. Her subtle melody filled the silence between them, and their steps were in rhythm with each other. From the corners of his eye, Shaurya observed her every now and again, looking away before she could catch him. She seemed so content in that moment. He would be caught dead before admitting it to her, but Anokhi was right. The night was beautiful. And so was she. Though he knew that what he felt for her was inappropriate, he allowed himself to just enjoy this time he had with her. Tomorrow his walls would be back up. But for tonight, he’d just be happy in her presence.

His hand accidentally brushed against hers and the tune suddenly stopped as she looked up at him. Naturally her skin burned at the unintentional contact and Shaurya grew awkward. He stuffed his hand in his pocket to avoid any more innocent grazes and broke the silence that he himself asked for to break the tension.

“Do you walk home this late every night?” Anokhi chose to not point out the inconsistency in his behavior that night, merely appreciating that he was slowly going back to normal and talking to her like before.

“Not every night. Only when I’m working or studying late or when I forget something like tonight.” Shaurya wondered how many times that meant. How often was she endangering herself for the sake of a textbook?

“You know that these streets aren’t safe, right?” It felt like such an obvious statement to him and yet Anokhi chuckled. He wasn't sure why she didn't take the warning seriously and this concerned him more. Now Shaurya wondered if every night he'd have to check and see if she was coming back to campus after hours. Because Ms. Bhalla had a penchant for showing up where she shouldn't be.

“I’m used to it. There were many times I got home late in Kapurthala. Sometimes the streets feel safer...” Anokhi held no bitterness in her voice as she thought of the verbal and sometimes physical blows she received whenever she came home late. Usually, she preferred to keep her life before entering SIAC locked in some back corner of her mind. She couldn’t change her fraught past, nor did she lament it. She wouldn't let yesterday’s nightmares spoil her future dreams. Shaurya also noticed that it was rare to receive these bits of information about her. His past was unceremoniously revealed to her, otherwise he too kept his issues private. But ever since his life became an open book to her, he found himself wanting to learn more about her.

“Besides, I’m a girl that spent two nights out on the streets when I first arrived in Chandigarh. I have a special connection with them now, ” she recounted, thinking back to just a year ago when she first stepped foot in this town with a nostalgic smile. Shaurya also was reminded of the day he found her camped out in the library and the second night when she chose to stay at the police station. Had she just accepted his offer and taken the car he sent that night, she wouldn’t have been so well acquainted with these streets.

“You were foolish then and you’re even more foolish now.” Truth be told Shaurya admired her resilience. Though he would complain that she was stubborn to a fault, the first thing he noticed about Anokhi, the thing that he was most attracted to, was her fighting spirit. The fact that against all odds, she made her way to SIAC and constantly proved that she was no less than anyone.

“No, it’s just that I have a way of protecting myself.” Anokhi had long stopped taking his words to heart, knowing that despite his rough delivery, it came from a place of care and concern. Shaurya gave her a perplexed look and she decided to show him what she meant by protecting herself. She dug around her bag for a second before producing her trusty pepper spray bottle for him to see. He instinctively recoiled at the memory of the last time she used that. On him!

“What’s wrong sir?” Anokhi teased playfully, giggling at this grown man being scared of such a small pepper spray. But it packed a punch, much like the woman herself. “Don’t worry, I won’t use it on you today.”

“Oh, thank you so much Anokhi.” His response was sarcastic but, as she broke out into a laugh, he also smiled at the memory of their first…well second, encounter.

“You were a hazard for me even when you didn’t know me.” He teased, though it lacked the usual bite of his verbal jabs. There was no malice. If anything, it sounded endearing.

“Sir you know I didn’t mean to. I thought,” she began to explain. They had this conversation multipletimes in the past.

“Yes, yes I know, Ms. Bhalla. You never mean to do anything. Things just happen, right?” This time it wasn’t just a smile. He actually laughed and Anokhi was caught off guard. Her steps halted as she watched in awe at the way his face completely changed when he was happy. She could count on one hand the number of times she had seen him laughing so freely. She decided she liked this version of him. She wanted to see this side of him more. And maybe it was greedy, but she wanted to be the reason for his laughter. When he realized she had stopped walking, Shaurya turned back to find her staring at him again. His smile faltered only slightly to manifest his confusion at her sudden pause.

“You should do that more often. Laugh openly, I mean. You look nice when you do,” she confessed without thinking.

That's the update friends! Anokhi is so smitten with her Shaurya sir Thank you all for reading and giving this story so much love and support 🤗 Do let me know what you think!
