Indian viewers can connect with Lagaan. It's about them, their problems, their fight, their triumph.

Whereas Swades was about an NRI. Indian viewers cannot connect with Mohan Bhargav (SRK), his problems and his fights. That's the reason Swadesh flopped and Lagaan was a hit.

Some I have. I was choosing not to argue the point, but I do find the presentation of Amir's characters in say, Dangal, as perfect (might not be the right word). There is little nuance like say a father living vicariously through children and not really respecting their wishes. Not talking of the real person here since I don't know his story. The movie character was portrayed as nearly a saint for giving his daughters a chance. Well... there were other ways to give them a chance, too, ways which didn't involve forcing them into something they didn't want. Once again, not judging what happens in real life. Only the movie.

@bold: Those are imperfections or the grey side of the character. He admits it in the latter half of the film. How is he portrayed as a saint with those imperfections? The highlight was the patriarchy in the society they lived in. The person in real is similar to the onscreen portrayal on screen.

They weren't shown as imperfections. I don't remember him admitting it at all. And if he did, the movie as a whole portrayed it as a good thing. Not to mention the women in the movie had no agency whatsoever. Everything, all the fighting was done by Dad, for Dad. Not one single character SUCCESSFULLY asks him at any point who are you doing this for? Seriously for your daughters? Or to fulfill your own leftover ambitions?

It is almost a pattern in Amir Khan filmography. Same with 3 Idiots - no matter how obnoxious Rancho was to regular students, how thoughtless he was to others, all is forgiven... well because... he's God, and what he did cannot possibly be wrong.

PK had no imperfections whatsoever. Nor did Lagaan. Laal Singh Chadda will be more of the same if they follow Forrest Gump. So either perfect or imperfections are glossed over and presented as virtue. Yeah, tiresome.

I have seen Lagaan when I was a kid , when it actually released, I remember enjoying it. The match , the songs the dialogues everything that a blockbuster film needs

I saw swades, some years back for the first time and woww it's a beautiful movie and it's SRK's finest performance , that movie makes you realise how under utilised SRK as an actor is . It was the best of phase of his career , all the movies before swades like Devdas, main hoon Na kal ho Na , you see srk the superstar but in swades you only see Mohan , It's his most natural , most beautiful performance Can't believe Saif Ali Khan won the national award over this LOL

And not just SRK's performance the whole movie is beautiful and everyone did a fab job , loved the chemistry between SRK and Gayatri and it's coming from someone who has a hard time acknowledging SRK's chemistry with anyone other than Kajol . And how beautiful they have shown an Indian village e yet how difficult there life is and how much they have to struggle for some day to day basic needs like electricity and water

That film inspires you a lot more than Lagaan , maybe coz it's more believable And

This is absolute nuts 🤣

People who had to pay Lagaan must be in their 70's when this film came out. And no one played cricket to get rid of it so chances of people relating to it are Zero. It was a story of triumph of a common man that's why it worked, not because people could relate to it.

Why is this even a comparison? Lagaan, obviously.

Swadesh is good, and it should be compared with other similar documentaries, not with commercial movies, let alone a classic.

Lagaan anyday.. It was a more complete movie and a better film watching experience. I liked Swadesh too and think it's best performance of Srk besides Chak de but the movie tends to be really slow and monotonous in some parts. I like the message it was trying to send and some scenes like that boy selling water to Mohan stood out, the music is great too in both the films but Lagaan excels in every aspect of filmmaking.

I don’t think I have seen a finer performance from SRK. This two minute clip has me in tears and this is from his heart-wrenching expression alone.
