Chapter 23 – Banter of Love
Kalyani paid no heed to Malhar’s advances rather she walked away ignoring him. Malhar knew exactly what she was doing so she he followed her. He smiled, looking at his wife’s antics and continued following her. He called out to her multiple times but to no avail. Finally he ran up to her and grabbed her arm. He calmly told her, “Look Kalyani, I know you are angry with me but I am here to pick you up. The weather doesn’t look too good. Please let’s just go home and talk this out.” while he was saying these things to her, Kalyani was busy trying to get out of his grasp. She looked at him and said, “Malhar ji!! Let go off me. I don’t need your charity. I have booked a ride for myself and I prefer that over your offer. So thank you but no thank you.”
Malhar rolled his eyes at his drama queen and pulled her towards himself, shocking Kalyani with his sudden move. But before he could say anything, a middle-aged couple interrupted their moment and said to Kalyani, “Miss, are you ok? Is this man bothering you? We saw that you were trying to get out of his grasp. Should we call the police?” Both of them were taken aback for moment but then Kalyani’s lips curved into a devilish smile and she said to the couple, “Yes Uncle, you are absolutely right. This man is bothering me. I am trying to tell him that I don’t need a ride from a stranger but he just isn’t listening.” Malhar was perplexed and stuck in an awkward situation when the middle-aged man got hold of him and instructed Kalyani to run. Kalyani thanked the couple and sheepishly walked away from them. She also turned around and naughtily waved Malhar goodbye as she walked out of the mall.
Malhar who was still stunned by his wife’s actions, came back to reality and introduced himself as a police officer to the middle-aged couple. He also showed them pictures of him and Kalyani. He told them that she was his wife and that she was just doing all this for fun. The middle-aged couple sighed in displeasure and scolded Malhar. They told Malhar to limit his roleplaying to the confines of his home and walked away. Malhar was embarrassed but also happy at the same time as he got to see a glimpse of his 18 year old Kalyani. He shook his head in amusement and raced to catch up with her.
Kalyani on the other hand had reached the parking lot and her cab had arrived. She was about to open the cab door when Malhar pulled her back and grabbed on to her arm. He paid the cab driver and asked him to leave while Kalyani was staring at him in bewilderment. As the cab departed, he turned towards her and said, “Kalyani!! Enough of your games now. You made a decorated police officer look like a local pervert today.” Kalyani instantaneously burst out into laughter upon hearing what he said. His heart was filled with warmth as he saw her laugh wholeheartedly. But he continued with a smile on his face, “It’s not funny Kalyani!! I was so embarrassed. They thought that I was eve teasing you. Why did you do that and since when am I, a stranger to you?” Kalyani quickly retorted back saying, “Oh so we are not strangers? Well that’s news to me because since yesterday you are treating me exactly like one. Every time I even tried talking to you, you walked away from me Malhar ji. So I took the hint and decided to give you a taste of your own medicine. Now you know how I felt.” Malhar was amazed at her authority. Whether she remembered him or not, there was something between them that kept them connected. He was overjoyed to hear her indirectly point out that she missed him.
Malhar looked at her lovingly and said, “Kalyani you won’t understand why I did, what I did. And this is no place to discuss it either so let’s go home.” Kalyani cutely raised her head towards him and responded, “NO!!” Malhar shook his head in disapproval and told her, “Fine then you leave me no choice. “ Before Kalyani could fathom what he meant, he had already picked her up in his arms and walked over to his jeep. People around them were staring at them but Kalyani and Malhar were busy gazing into each other's eyes. Kalyani was spellbound, she had no idea how to react. She had never seen this side of him before and she couldn’t understand why he was being so possessive of her.
Malhar put her down on the passenger side of his jeep and strapped her in while Kalyani was still looking at him in amusement. Malhar smiled at her and walked over to his seat and began driving the jeep. On their way back, there was an awkward silence between the two of them. Kalyani was trying to process what had happened a couple of minutes back while Malhar was trying to figure out what she was thinking. A few minutes later, Kalyani broke out of her trance and said to Malhar, “Malhar ji can I ask you something?” Before he could reply, she continued on, “Did Aai say something to you about what happened on Friday night? Was that the reason why you were avoiding me earlier? If so I am sorry Malhar ji, I cleared things out with Aai and told her that nothing happened between us that night.” Malhar was in awe of her, no matter what happened, she had always been his true advocate. He realised how lucky he was to have her and said, “Don’t worry Kalyani. Maai didn’t tell me anything. If anything, it was my fault and I should have known better. But thank you for defending me.”
Kalyani then cutely said, “Malhar ji stop being childish. When nothing happened that night, why will you be at fault? ” To which he responded, “I am being childish huh? Who was it acting like a child, in the mall and giving me a hard time huh?” As he said this Kalyani and Malhar looked at each other and laughed. Kalyani finally said, “Ok fine. I’ll stop being childish, if you promise to never ignore me ever again.” These words were music to his ears, ignoring her was eating him away but thankfully now she wanted to him to talk to her so Anupriya would have to oblige. Malhar happily agreed and the both of them smiled at each other as they continued on their journey.
The weather was getting turbulent by the minute, so they took a shortcut to reach home early. They were travelling on this abandoned shortcut road when Malhar’s jeep suddenly broke down.
