PART 3: Divorce Papers and Wedding Bells

The warden watched as Vansh Rai Singhania drove away from the parking lot of the orphanage. She sighed before making her way into the cabin.

She looked towards to the window to see Riddhima looking out, watching the cars whiz past the street though Vansh and his Benz were long gone.

“He seemed very worried, Riddhu.” She spoke. “Why are you hiding from him when he is so desperately looking for you.”

Riddhima turned to her, a small huff exiting her lips. “He is not searching for me to fix our relation Madam. There is nothing to fix in this relation in the first. I probably hurt his ego when I said I will send the divorce notice or something. Must be here to make sure he does it first.”

The warden wanted to put forward her thoughts but her Riddhu looked tired, beaten and too worn out that she decided this was not the time nor her place to speak.

“I just need you to do a few more favors Madam.” She sighed.

“Anything for you, beta.

It had been three weeks and his men hadn’t been able to find where his wife is.

Vansh was furious, frustrated and dreadful. He couldn’t bear the thought of never finding her again.

“Bhai please, you need to let go of her and focus on your business.” Aryan said, having watched his elder brother’s mania for the last few days.

“Stay out of this Aryan!” Vansh gritted out, nursing a glass of whiskey. “Nobody asked your opinion.”

“Bhai, but there is a limit to all this. How long are you going ignore everything but your mission to find Riddhima?”

“However long it takes Aryan! Now get out of my room!” He barked in his face.

Aryan shut his eyes as he took a deep breath and nodded, walking out without another word. He heard the glass shatter to the floor as he closed the door.

Ishani and Chanchal stood outside, both needing no explanation of what had happened inside.

They had thought that he had finally been shown Riddhima's true side but Sia’s words had ruined everything. They were so mad at the situation but they could do nothing because they had no control or say in Vansh’s decision and the people who had were also eagerly waiting or searching for her.

Dadi spent her days in front of the mandir, taking the name of every god she knows to bring back her daughter-in-law and complete her grandson again.

Sia spent her in the physiotherapist’s clinic, regaining her strength. She too missed her Babhi really and she probably was the only person who could say without hesitance that she had never hurt Riddhima and always listened to her and understood her.

All she felt was longing to have her friend back and her Bhai’s love complete.

But there was no news about her.

It was a Sunday and Dadi had somehow convinced Vansh to have lunch with the whole family. As they sat there, eating quietly, Vansh looked around the table. Next to him sat his Dadi and best friend, they always loved and respected Riddhima. Sia too loved her. But all the rest of them hated her and always tried to hurt her, blame her and put her down. He remembered how Aryan used to harass her. Then across from him sat Kabir. The reason for everything!

Or is he? His conscious asked. If you lost her due to him, you met her due to him only. It’s true that all the situations were created by Kabir, but the decisions and choices were all on him.

“Sir, there’s a mail for you.” One of the help approached him.

“From who?” Ishani asked.

“Riddhima Babhi, Sir.” The help didn’t get to finish as Vansh whizzed past him, rushing to the door.

It was a thin parcel. Pain surged through his chest for he knew what it was.

He signed the register nevertheless and took the parcel looking for the return address. It was Advocate Suhana Bagchi from Kolkata?

“Angre!” He passed him the parcel and walked out, banging on the pillar as he tried to vent out his frustration.

“Boss, Riddhima Babhi was in Kolkata till yesterday. She doesn’t know where she is now.” Angre told him, disappointment evident in his voice. “Boss, Babhi knows you very well. She is evading every attempt of yours.” He held the papers up. “This may probably be the only way we could make her show up.”

Vansh turned around, the plan already forming in his mind. They weren’t married for long and this divorce was by mutual consent. That meant both of them will have to report to the family court to finalize it.

He nodded as he took the papers and walked into his office, taking out his pen to sign the paper. His eyes stayed on her signatures and his hand trembled. The pen hovered inches away from the paper but he couldn’t bring himself to sign it.

He fisted the pen and threw it against the wall.

“Boss?”

“I can’t do it! I just can’t! Find some other means! Keep looking for her!”

.

Six months and six notices from the lawyer later, there still was no news to where Riddhima was.

Aryan and Kabir had tried to use these months to try to get a bigger role in Vansh’s business but when alcohol became incapable of curing his pain, Vansh had thrown himself into his work, not letting them have any part in it. Ishani was eight months pregnant now and Dadi had busied herself with her.

Sia was finally able to walk and do chores without any support or weakness and she was dating Dr. Omkar Singh Arneja, her physiotherapist, a man who had come under several scrutiny from both her brother and brother-in-law’s side.

He had proposed and she had said yes. They were getting engaged next week.

“Omkar beta, how many guests will be coming from your side?” Dadi asked as she checked out the lists of things that was done.

“Dadi, it’s not finalised yet. As you know, it’s just me and my Ma. Since my parents’ families were against their marriage, no one kept contact and Papa is also dead.” He spoke. “From our side, it’s only going to be my colleagues and friends and my mother’s friends and acquaintances and they are in different parts of the country and world so I will tell by Friday?”

“Of course beta.” Dadi smiled.

Sia stood behind Ishani, smiling shyly as she massaged her heavily pregnant sister’s shoulders.

“You couldn’t wait till my delivery, could you?” Ishani rolled her eyes as she watched her sister’s bashfulness.

“Arrey, the whole idea is to get married while you look like a hippo so that you don’t take all the spotlight.” Sia winked.

Ishani swatted at her hand, offended and turned to her brother who was walking by, his eyes glued to his phone. “Did you hear Bhai? Sia called me a hippo!” She whined. Ishani had turned way childish in the past few months due to all her hormones.

“Sia, don’t be mean to your sister.” Vansh said in a monotone without even looking making his sisters narrow their eyes at him.

“Vansh, at least greet Om-” Vansh was out the door even before Dadi could finish her sentence. “I am so sorry beta.”

“I understand Dadi.” Omkar smiled. “Sia told me everything. I will take my leave now.”

Omkar walked out with Sia talking about their future and eventually got in the car, waving her goodbye.

He was on his way back to his house when his phone rang. He put it on speaker.

“Hari? Tell me you are coming, please!” Omkar said to his friend, Hari Krishnan from Kerala, who was also a physiotherapist.

“Not only am I coming, I have also figured out how to make Riddhima Vansh Rai Singhania come!”
