CHAPTER 17 World At My Feet

Neil, Mickey, Jazz, Bobby, Preet all were on cloud nine since they came to know that they have been selected for the finale. Their happiness and excitement increased 10 times when organizers told them that they will be doing Grand Finale at New york. When they were performing in their college here, they had become quite popular in surrounding areas as well…so New York was their place in a way…the place where they had performed many times and spent most wonderful time of their life. They were already quite popular here among youth and with the support of their old friends they were quite sure that they will rock the stage. But as the day of final fight came no matter how relaxed they were, the tension, the anxiety, the nervousness came back to them.

Both band have to perform 5 songs each for the finale and their marks plus the votes will decide their final result. The other finalist "the Rockers" was performing first on the stage while all of "Hurricane" members were getting ready in the dressing room for their performance. Neil was fixing his hair when he looked last time at himself in the mirror to check if everything is ok. He froze at the moment when he heard their name being called on the stage. He just blinked and stood like a statue in the front of mirror…finally the moment has come…finally their chance to perform…he looked at mirror and all the past events played like a movie in front of his eyes. Here some years ago their band was formed…..their decision to make career in music….his fight with Yash….their challenge…suddenly as if adding to the audio effects words spoken by Yash echoed in his ears ,…"I'll give you two years time to prove yourself and get over with this whimsical obsession of yours and if you fail, you will do whatever I say"… NO…Neil said out loud and came out of the thoughts. He looked back at the mirror again, this time, with more confidence and said, "I will not fail dad, I will not let you control my life. I will win. I have to WIN." Mickey came there rushing, “Neil,what are you doing here? Come, we have to go." "Coming…come on let srock the stage." Neil said with confident smile.

In Mumbai, Yash was sitting in his living room in front of tv, tightly clutching remote in his hands as if someone will steal it from him.This was very unlike him. He rarely watched tv that also for something else then business news but seeing him this involved in watching a reality show was a rare sight to his servants also who were serving him dinner there only. Seema came from her bedroom she was also surprised to see him.

“Yash…are you really there sitting in our living room watching tv…other than news…or its just my imagination?” Seema made fun of him.

“ Seema….please I am not in a mood to entertain your nonsense. But for your kind information I am watching finale of this stupid reality show in which your son has wasted his precious time.” Yash answered.

Seema scolded herself, “Oh God! How could I forget….today is the grand finale of the show….I didn't even call Neil since morning and wished him best of luck.”

“What!….you forget about the finals….and I thought you supported your son.” Yash taunted her.

Seema controlled her anger somehow, “Stop it Yash, don't you provoke me to pick up fight.” She sat on the sofa, “ I hope you don't mind if I join you. After all my son is going to win, I am not with him but I can watch his victory.”

“Victory!!! Huh…..dream on.” Yash mocked her.

At Singh’s residence, Babita was shouting from past half an hour for Arya and Mini to eat something. But both were glued to the tv in Mini's bedroom watching the finale. At last Babita brought food for them in bedroom. Mini had not touched anything and was biting her nails in tension.

Babita put her hand affectionately on her head, “Minni…tension mat lo….kuch kha toh lo…tumne dinbhar se kuch nahi khaya.....dekho Neil aur uske dost achcha perform kar rahe hain wo log jarur jitenge.”

“Mumma, just see, their rivals have also performed very well and have scored good marks from judges and look the at the audience they are going crazy after them.” Babita sighed, her daughter was behaving as if it was her final exams today. Mini started scolding Arya too in tension, “Arya, what are you doing? Why you have stopped? Keep voting online and from all the sims that I have gave you and I hope you have already told your all friends to vote.”

Arya rolled her eyes, “Chill, relax…I have already told everyone I know to vote for Neil.”

Mini prayed to the god for the umpteenth time, “Please God let him win….you know na its very important for him. Please let him win…I will do anything for it please.”

Finally the performance of both the bands was over. All participants were tired and sweaty. After all, its not easy to perform 5 back to back songs for live audience. But somewhere they all were scared and tensed as hell. The moment for which they have waited for all these months has finally come. The moment which can change their life forever or can break their dreams and their hearts with it in to pieces. The FINAL DECISION can be made any time. Both the bands were called on stage for the final verdict. The host of the show made them stand in one line facing the audience. Neil and group stood holding each others' hand tightly for support.

Host of the show invited judges to open the envelope of results. “I wish both the bands best of luck. Here I have the final result in this envelope with me. The final score is computed after having votes from all over the world and adding judges score to it. I know you all want to know it as fast as possible but….….” The host went on and on building suspense and testing the patience of all, the participant as well the people who were watching the show, to the extent that participants wanted to snatch the envelope from him while audience wanted break their tv or kick this man out of stage.

At last again mentioning the sponsors of the show for the umpteenth time he handed over the result to judges. They opened the envelope and breath of every participant was caught in their throat.

The judges announced, “And the winner is………."

In Mumbai, the atmosphere of Oberoi mansion was very tensed. Yash and Seema were looking at their tv screen without blinking, waiting for the result. Seema had her fingers crossed while Yash was literally shaking with apprehension as to what will happen if Neil will win this show. No matter how much he hated to accept this fact but he knew Neil had already become popular because of this show and now if he wins it will become very easy for him to win their challenge…NO…means he will lose his only son…he will never listen to him again.

At Singh’s residence both Mini and Arya were glued to the tv. Their parents also joined them to see the final result. As soon as the host opened the envelop Mini ran from there and stood in front of temple in their living room. “Oh maata rani, I can see it…..please please please…let Neil win.”She prayed with her eyes tightly shut and hands folded in front of Goddess. Arya shouted to call her, "Hey what are you doing? Come here they are going to announce the result anytime." Mini replied without opening her eyes, "No way I am not coming…I can't bear this anymore. I might faint."and she continued silently imploring her maata rani to let his Neil win.

The judges announced, “And the winner is…..none other than HURRICANE." As soon as he said those words all the members of Hurricane took the breath which they were holding since few minutes now. The judges clapped for them. Audience went crazy and started shouting their name and cheering for them. For few seconds they themselves couldn't believe that they have won….finally…finally…their dream come true…they WON.

Bobby picked up Preet in his arms in excitement while Mickey and Jazz hugged each other tight. Neil just slumped down on his knees on to the floor. He ran his hand in his hair and sighed with relief. His wait is over…he has won…he got what he wanted so desperately. All their hard work, their practice session, their struggle, their patience has finally paid off. “I have done it…I have finally won it Mini" he whispered. He couldn’t speak more as he felt his vision getting blurred. He touched his face; there were tears in his eyes…tears of happiness. He wiped them quickly before anybody could notice it and joined his friends in group hug.

Judges presented the winners cheque of 25 crore as prize money. The host brought with him the album contract jointly by Mtv and Vh1channel, wrapped in red ribbon judges presented it to them which they took happily. Once again they engaged in group hug. Neil saw the contract and realized that it has laid down his way of winning his challenge with Yash or it would not be wrong if he say he has already won it. He could see their band’s popularity and people going crazy for them. It also reminded him of his promise he made to Mini that when he will win the challenge he will talk to his dad about them and they will get married soon. He was already missing her and now was dying to go back to Mumbai and to take her in his arms.

As soon as Mini heard Hurricane's name as winner she sighed with relief and couldn't stop happy tears coming out of her eyes. She thanked her maata rani innumerable times. Arya came screaming her name and pulled her into a bone crushing hug, "They won they won…yeah…hurray…they won…OMG I can't believe it." Her parents also hugged her, they were happy for Mini and Neil. Arya started laughing at Mini when she saw tears in her eyes, "Oh…stop crying my drama queen….its time to party. And that's exactly I am gonna do. We will give Neil and all the friends a welcome party." Mini finally smiled between her tears.

As the judges announced Hurricane as winner, Seema clapped with joy and sent silent prayer to God. But Yash's temper crossed all the limits and the remote which he was clutching in his hand so tightly he threw it at tv screen damaging it. Seema was shocked to see him like this. She knew Yash didn't want Neil to make career in music and he was against of participating in this show but he would react like this on his victory! Their son has won international level competition…he was looking so happy. And Yash…instead of feeling proud on him….he broke the tv.

No matter how much she hated Yash but all these years she secretly hoped that behind this tough, rude, egoistic, money minded Yash her old Yash, whom she loved with all her heart is there somewhere. Even if he didn't care for her, he cared for their son. But this one moment, his one action, his reaction….had break all her hopes forever. Yash has gone far…far away from them. For the first time she didn't argue with him and silently left in her room to find some solace by drowning herself once again in alcohol. And Yash on other hand was fuming in anger. He broke few more glasses to control his temper but just didn't help. How could this happen? How could Neil win….their challenge…he will lose. Yash Oberoi is defeated by his own son…NO.
