Chapter 20 – Necessary Roughness

Kalyani felt secure in Malhar’s arms while Kalyani’s warm embrace reassured Malhar of their love. It was a perfect night as it was just the two of them, there were no interruptions or adversities to torment them. They spent the entire night sleeping peacefully on the media room couch.

As the sun rose the next morning, Anupriya was the first one to wake as usual. She quickly took a bath, got dressed and headed out to Kalyani’s room to check in on her. She was taken aback for a minute as she noticed that Kalyani’s bed was empty. She called out Kalyani a couple of times but got no response in return. So she began looking around the house for her. While walking through the corridor, she saw light emanating from the media room. So she assumed that Kalyani might have be there and walked towards it.

As Anupriya entered the media room, she was shocked to see Kalyani fast asleep in Malhar’s arms. While she knew about Malhar's feelings for Kalyani, she also knew that his proximity could cloud Kalyani’s recovery process and also his involvement in Kalyani’s accident was still unknown to her. She had warned him time and again to distance himself from her daughter but he had always done the opposite which gave her mixed signals about his innocence. This enraged her so she yelled out, “KALYANI!! What are you doing here?”

Anupriya’s authoritative voice startled both Kalyani and Malhar. They woke up with a jolt and noticed their position. Kalyani immediately separated herself from Malhar’s grip and stood up in embarrassment while Malhar who was still trying to make sense of the situation noticed the anger brewing in Anupriya’s eyes and realised his actions. Anupriya sternly asked Kalyani, “Kalyani!! What on earth is going on here? Did you sleep here the entire night?” Kalyani was about to answer her when Anupriya continued, “You know what I don’t want an explanation from you. Go to your room right now and get dressed for breakfast.”

Kalyani knew that she had done nothing wrong but she also knew that her mother was not in a state to rationalize what she had witnessed, so she quietly walked away from there. Once Kalyani had left the room, Anupriya gave an earful to Malhar and questioned his motives. She asked him, “What do you want Malhar? Do you want to kill her? Was it not enough the first time around that you are trying to do it again?” and threatened him that if he continued this behaviour then she would take Kalyani away from Aurangabad until her recovery was complete.

Sarthak had overheard the entire conversation so he immediately stepped in to handle the situation. He looked at Malhar and asked him to explain himself. Malhar recapped the entire incident and looked at Anupriya and said, “Please Maai don’t take her away from me. I am really sorry for my slip-up last night. It won’t happen again.” Anupriya was no mood to hear any more of it so she just left the room while Sarthak comforted Malhar and reassured him that he would never let Anupriya take Kalyani away.

Kalyani had now bathed and gotten dressed for breakfast. She knew that her mother was conflicted with what she had witnessed in the morning. So she wanted to clear the air before things spiralled out of hand. She walked up to Anupriya who was in the kitchen prepping for the breakfast and said, “Aai please don’t misinterpret what you saw in the morning. It was nothing. Malharji and I were just watching a movie late last night and fell asleep. It was completely innocent and unintentional.” Anupriya didn’t want to continue discussing further on this matter so she acknowledged Kalyani’s explanation and requested her help to set the table.

At the breakfast table, there was nothing but awkward silence. Malhar was quiet the entire time while Anupriya being the protective mother that she was, was keeping an eye on Malhar. Sarthak on the other hand was just trying to maintain peace between his wife and his nephew while Aaosaheb, Avni and Moksh were left wondering about what was happening. Malhar was also deliberately ignoring Kalyani as he knew that Anupriya would pounce on him if he were to speak with Kalyani. Every time Kalyani tried to converse with him, he just looked away. Kalyani understood that his actions must have been the result of a stand-off between her mother and him so she receded her moves.

But Kalyani in an attempt to diffuse the tension began conversing with Moksh instead and said, “Moksh!! your choice of name has Malharji written all over it. If I was around when he named you then I would have definitely suggested a more hip name.” This made Moksh giggle in response and say, “Ok then Aunty you give me a nickname now” To which Kalyani quickly replied, “First of all mister, it’s Kalyani and not Aunty and second of all great idea….let me think!! Let me think!!....hmmmmmm alright I am going to call you PILLU from now on. Ok my cutie pie?”

Malhar literally dropped his spoon onto his plate, the moment he heard her call Moksh PILLU. Kalyani was taken aback by everyone’s expressions so she asked, “Is everything alright? Did I say something wrong? Why are you all looking at me like that?” Everyone quickly snapped out of their state of shock and reassured her that everything was fine. Kalyani was slowing beginning to notice a pattern here, she noticed that ever since her return people were always walking on eggshells around her. She didn’t know the reason behind it but it definitely fed to her curiosity. But before she could respond back, Moksh jumped in merriment and hugged her. Moksh was just happy that his mother was atleast remembering parts of their relationship. He expressed that he loved his new nickname and thanked her for it. Kalyani hugged him back tightly and kissed his cheeks.

Malhar knew that Kalyani’s memory was fuzzy but her action today had given him hope that someday it would all return to her and that his family would finally be together. He had happy tears in his eyes but he successfully concealed it from everyone in an attempt to adhere to Anupriya’s demand. Sarthak and Anupriya were also relieved to see that she was finally making some progress in her recovery while Avni was panicking imagining what her state would be if Kalyani regained her memories.

What was Avni so afraid of? What was Kalyani going to remember about Avni? Was there more to what had happened that night? Find out more in Chapter 21.
