You have to realize, majority of INDIA is STILL very conservative, even in 2020.

Besides, good family entertainers have always been liked by the masses, and through re-runs on television & CD/DVD, they develop a cult following with children/family audience.

Ask yourself? In 2006, what would you have preferred to watch alongside your family/kids/parents/grandparents?
Would you've watched a Murder or a Aashiq Banay Aapne with them?😆

True but the tonality of the movie was so banal. I understand if it would have worked with a TV audience which is frequented by the conservatives. The movie going audience consists mainly of youth, and they love a different sort of movie, the tide tilts towards contemporary themes concerning the urban Indian, while paarivaarik issues are consigned to television soaps.

Shahid-Amrita's chemistry in the film was sublime. Main reason the film worked IMO.

Other than that the film is too melodramatic...

The chemistry of Shahid-Amrita made the movie cherry on the top. But their chemistry was not the only reason, coz earlier their movies Shikhar, Waah! Life ho to Aisi didn't work at the BO. It was the making and cinematography that made the movie watchable. Like someone has already said, Sooraj Barjatya has expertise in making the best kind of family movies. So even the young generation went to watch Vivaah.

Shahid- amrita chemistry, good music, grounded scenarios , most who would have got arranged marriage which are most people would identify all the ritual etc. Show in the movie, had some tv quality melodrama.

Also it's a feel good movie lighthearted movie, which can be seen with family or with your better half, and it released in pre internet era.

So there is charm in showing couple trying to somehow talk on phone or meet when they were away from each other, which couldn't be shown today with zoom calls and instant messaging.

Dhoom 2 was 2006 biggest grossing film. That didn’t have anymore appeal to me than Vivaah did

Yes it was simply Cheesy family film after long time. No vulgarity or crudeness. Just sugary sweet ❤️
