Chapter 16 – Damage Control

Malhar had overheard the entire conversation, he quickly swooped in and informed Kalyani that her clothes were damaged a couple of weeks ago when Ahilya Niwas was being renovated. And that these sarees must have been placed in her closet by mistake. But his explanation didn’t quite satisfy Kalyani, so she respectfully questioned him that if it was as simple as that then why was her mother so tensed? Kalyani was not going to back off easily. So she once again began hounding her mother for answers. Kalyani was also beginning to feel slightly uneasy at this point.

Virat heard the commotion coming from Kalyani’s room and headed in to check on her. As he entered the room, he noticed how agitated Kalyani was. He instantly stepped in between Kalyani and Anupriya in order to pacify her. He held Kalyani’s face in his hands, looked in her right in the eyes and requested her to calm down. He calmly asked her what had happened. Anupriya jumped in and explained everything that had happened. Virat knew that Kalyani’s family was finding it difficult to adjust to the new norm so he gently redirected her attention by laughing at her ability to over react at everything. He smilingly said to Kalyani, “My little drama queen!! Stop interrogating your mother like she is a criminal. She was up the entire night worrying about you. Her exhaustion is the reason for her strange demeanour, so stop hounding her and let her rest. And as far as your dresses are concerned, don’t you think that it’s quite possible to have lost them during the renovation?”, His soothing tone and conduct brought Kalyani back to her senses and calmed her down.

Virat and Kalyani had genuinely developed a special bond. He exactly knew how to calm her down and it was clearly evident that Kalyani trusted him completely as she immediately agreed with him and apologised to her mother for getting so hyper. Anupriya was thankful that Virat was there to handle the situation, his swift actions had saved her today. She look at him with gratitude, Virat understood her relief and sympathised with her.

But Kalyani was displeased as she now had nothing to wear. Anupriya who noticed her discontentment, suggested that they should go out shopping later that day to buy her clothes but also requested her to wear the saree for the time being. Kalyani unwillingly agreed. As she was about to head out, Virat grabbed onto her hand and indicated that she could instead use the clothes that she had got from Mumbai. He reminded her of all the cute antics she had pulled on their shopping trip in Mumbai and finally made her smile.

Malhar who was witnessing all this was wrecked. While he was happy that Kalyani was not agitated anymore, seeing her comfort level with Virat was pricking him. It was his job to take care of his Kalyani but she didn’t even recognise him anymore and he wasn’t allowed to do anything about it. It was too painful for him to watch Virat caress Kalyani’s face and jealousy began brewing in his mind. He knew that it was wrong of him to feel jealous and that Virat was in fact a saviour but he couldn’t help himself. He interrupted their conversation and requested Virat for his car keys. He then told Kalyani that he would fetch her bag from the car and instructed her to get ready. Kalyani agreed and left the room. Anupriya thanked Virat once again for all his help and led him to the breakfast table.

Kalyani was feeling light and rejuvenated after long hot bath. Malhar had already placed the bag on her bed and left. She opened it and put on a black and white striped sheath dress that was cinched at the waist with the fabric belt. The dress was buttoned down and had shoulder straps.

At the breakfast table:

Everyone was seated at the table and Anupriya was serving them breakfast. Malhar had quietly saved a seat next to him for Kalyani. Virat was seated opposite to him and they were all making conversation. Although Virat had met them all the previous night, he still didn’t know how they were all related. All he knew was that Anupriya was Kalyani’s mother. Aaosaheb then formally introduced herself to Virat and continued introducing Anupriya as Kalyani’s Aai, Sarthak as Kalyani’s step dad and Malhar as Kalyani’s brother in law. Malhar was shocked to hear Aaosaheb address him as Kalyani’s brother in law, Kalyani was not even at the table and there was no need to hide the truth from Virat. It pained him to be addressed as anything other than Kalyani’s husband. But Sarthak controlled him and signalled him to stand down as creating a scene in front of a stranger was inappropriate. Aaosaheb was enjoying all this a little too much. She was helping Anupriya with Kalyani’s situation but at the same time, she was leaving no stone unturned when it came to taunting Malhar.

Kalyani on the other hand had gotten ready and joined the rest of her family for breakfast. Kalyani was looking ravishing in that dress and her stride exuded confidence as she was back with her family. Malhar was silently admiring her beauty as she walked over to the table. She was about to sit next to him when Anupriya stopped her and instructed her to sit next to Virat instead. Anupriya was a paranoid mother, she did not want to take any chance. Kalyani who didn’t realise the real reason behind her mother’s request, casually agreed and sat down next to Virat.

Kalyani greeted everyone at the table though she couldn’t recognise Sarthak and Avni. But she knew that Anupriya was not going to reveal anything until the breakfast was done so she kept quiet. Anupriya had prepared all of Kalyani’s favourite dishes. Virat praised Anupriya’s culinary skills and teased Kalyani that she should be taking some tips from her Mother when it came to cooking. Kalyani playfully fought with him and chuckled. Virat and Kalyani had a lot of inside jokes that no one understood. Noticing everyone’s interest in the matter, Kalyani recounted the time at Virat’s place when she had managed to burn even a dish as simple as Maggi. Seeing Kalyani be so carefree and cheerful made everyone’s day. They had all missed her bubbly antics.

Poor Malhar was burning with jealousy and remembering their time in the kitchen, when they were making tea while being cuffed to each other. He was slowly realising that spending time with her from now on was going to be an uphill battle. Sarthak who understood his pain, comforted him.
