Chapter 14 – The New Normal

Aaosaheb had overheard the entire conversation as she returned from the kitchen. She served tea to everyone and sat down with them wanting to share her 2 cents on the whole situation. She indicated that the best course of action now would be to create a peaceful environment at home so that Kalyani could recover soon. This meant that, they all had to put their difference aside and put on a united front for Kalyani. She looked at Anupriya and encouragingly said that even though Kalyani had forgotten the last 7 years of her life, she had at least remembered her Aai and the love that she had for her. That was something good to hold on to. While Anupriya was relieved about that, there were still a lot of uncertainties and more than anything they now had to come with a cover story.

Anupriya looked to Sarthak for his support in whatever she was planning for her daughter’s safety, to which he happily obliged. With that, she firstly instructed Malhar to move his things out of Kalyani’s room and to stay in Moksh’s room until Kalyani regained her memories. She further conveyed to him that while she was aware that his actions that night were done in a state of intoxication, she still didn’t know the entire story so until such a time as they uncovered the whole truth, he would have to deliberately distance himself from Kalyani. Malhar was shattered, although he knew that this had to be done for his Kalyani’s safety, his heart still ached at the thought of separating from her. She expressed that if he truly loved Kalyani then he would do this for her. Malhar unwillingly agreed to her request as he didn’t want Kalyani to stumble upon any information accidently.

Sarthak on the other hand was stuck between a rock and hard place, he knew that Anupriya was not purposefully hurting Malhar rather she was only prioritizing her daughter’s wellbeing but he also realised that Malhar was unintentionally being punished here. While it seemed logical to make him move out of his bedroom, it was unfair in asking him to distance himself from his wife. But he kept his cool and decided that it would be best to discuss this matter in private with her later. Sarthak then suggested to Anupriya that they should let Kalyani know that Atul had been moved to a prison outside the city and that due to a recent prison riot there, visitation facility had been revoked. This would ensure that Kalyani would not try to communicate with him for the time being.

Aaosaheb then jumped into the conversation by indicating that they should also inform Kalyani that they were now estranged from Vivek’s family as they all moved to Pune against Aaosaheb’s wishes. She also mentioned that they would have to break the news about Raosaheb’s death to Kalyani as they could use it to justify Sarthak and Anupriya’s marriage by implying it to be his dying wish. There was still 50-50 chance that their plan could backfire but Aaosaheb knew how desperately Kalyani had wanted her Aai to move on in life. So she was confident that Kalyani would be able to handle this bittersweet situation. Everyone finally agreed to her intricately woven web of lies in cohesion.

The only thing that was now left to handle was Moksh. Malhar immediately showed accountability there and said that he would tell Kalyani that Moksh was his adopted son so that Moksh could continue addressing him as his baba and would request her to keep mum on it in order to spare Moksh’s feelings. They also decided that it was best, not to deceive Moksh as he had seen enough of it earlier in his life. So they were going to inform him that Kalyani was unwell because of which she had become forgetful. They were going to reassure him that although she didn’t recognise him now, she still loved him with all her heart and that she would remember him as soon as she recovered. This way Moksh could stay at home with his family. Avni was going to be ordered to keep her mouth shut and pretend to be Moksh’s nanny.

It was almost 7 am when everything was finalised. They were up the entire night and were extremely exhausted. They all promised to keep their end of the bargain so that Kalyani wouldn’t find any loop holes in their story. Malhar headed to his bedroom to pack up his things while the rest of family left to freshen up.

At Kalyani and Malhar’s bedroom:

Malhar entered the room stealthily so that Kalyani wouldn’t wake and began packing all his thing. Every object in their room reminded him of their time together which made him emotional. But he gathered what courage he had left and continued his work. Once all his things were packed, he moved them all into Moksh’s room. But no matter how hard tried, he couldn’t stop himself from going back into Kalyani’s room. He just wanted to be with her despite what everyone had requested him. He went back in and softly closed the door behind him so that no one would notice them. He lied down beside her and began caressing her cheeks. He apologised to her for his mistakes and for putting her in a position that had led to this situation. He promised her that he would nurse her back to health and once she regained her memories, they would live like the happy family she had always imagined them to be.

Malhar also assured her that he would take good care of Moksh while she recovered. Throughout their relationship, Malhar had always felt that he was never Kalyani’s choice for a man. He and their relationship had been forced on her and she had only made peace with it. So now that she had forgotten all about it, he knew she could never fall for a guy like him. Malhar’s insecurities were now maddening him -- what would he do if she never remembered him? What would he do without her love? -- These thoughts began taking over his mind. Today, he was feeling like a little boy who was in desperate need of a hug from his loved one. But he tried consoling himself by thinking that even if her mind didn’t remember their relationship, her heart would always love him. As he coped with his misery, he kissed her forehead and got off the bed as she could wake in any minute.

As he unlocked the door, Kalyani began regaining her consciousness. She slowly opened her eyes trying to figure out where she was and as she turned over, she saw Malhar. She called out, “Malhar ji”, in a groggy state. The sound of her “Malhar ji” was music to his ears. Malhar immediately rushed to her side and helped her sit up. He had happy tears in his eyes as he offered her some water. Anupriya who had finished freshening up entered Kalyani’s room in order to check on her only to find Malhar doing the one thing that he had promised not to do.

How will Anupriya react to this? How will everyone adjust to the new normal? Will Kalyani ever regain her memories? Will she remember her connection with Moksh and Malhar? Find out more in Chapter 15.
