Before this chapter begins, I wanted to give a special shout out to @Chandu_500, @Bacillusbadius and @Sehreemlove. Chapter 13 – Double edged sword

Anupriya was trying her hardest to control her emotions but her mind was racing. Although she knew that Malhar’s actions were influenced by the drugs he was given, she still didn’t know what had triggered him to do it. The CCTV footage had only captured the video and not the audio so she couldn’t completely figure out what Malhar’s motives were. And with Kalyani now back in the house, she wanted to determine if Malhar’s intentions were malicious or not in order to ensure her daughter’s safety. Sarthak who was noticing the change in her demeanour, put his arms around her to comfort her. He wanted to reassure her that he sympathised with her agony and that he was going to be there to support her no matter what. This assurance brought a faint smile on Anupriya’s face.

As Malhar looked at Sarthak and Anupriya, he realised how pathetic and lonely his life had become due to his trust issues. Everyone had someone to share their happiness and pain with, even Sarthak and Anupriya had put aside their differences and reunited, but he had constantly pushed away the one person who wanted to be there for him. Kalyani had time and again paid the price for his mistakes and in return only earned his anger and distrust. Malhar was cursing himself for treating Kalyani like his personal punching bag and realised that maybe this time around his actions were truly irredeemable. All he now wanted was one last to chance to win her back. He feared that Kalyani might want to separate from him for good and as painful as that thought was, he also knew that he deserved it so he continued mulling in his sorrow.

Virat reluctantly began saying that as much as he understood their pain, there was still something that he had to share with them. Virat informed them that when Kalyani had recollected her memories, he had noticed that something was amiss. And upon enquiring Kalyani more about her life, Virat realised that she now identified herself as a 19 year old woman meaning that she had forgotten the events of the last 7 years of her life. He also indicated that it was impossible to determine if the memory loss was temporary or permanent, it could all come back to her one day or not at all. His words were echoing in everyone’s minds and a huge storm swept through Ahilya Niwas leaving everyone in despair. Anupriya, Sarthak and Malhar stood up as if they were stricken by lightning. Even Aaosaheb was broken up about it. Suddenly Kalyani’s indifferent behaviour earlier towards Moksh and Malhar began making sense. 7 years meant that Kalyani had forgotten all about Moksh, her marriage with Malhar and more than anything the love that she had for Malhar. So much had happened over the last 7 years, the thought that Kalyani forgetting any of them was making Malhar feel like as if a knife was passing through his heart.

There he was a couple of minutes ago thinking about ways to apologize to his Kalyani and there he was now realising that she was not going to remember being his Kalyani. Malhar’s world had turned upside down in a fraction of a second.

Virat knew that what he had just shared, had truly horrified Kalyani’s family but he was not yet finished. He checked with Anupriya to find out if Kalyani had ever been in an accident before as her scans had indicated a prior head injury. Noticing a mute Anupriya, Sarthak immediately stepped in and confirmed that she had been in one 5 years ago (Kalyani falling off the cliff when Malhar had shot her). Upon hearing this, Virat mentioned that the previous head trauma combined with the current one had left Kalyani’s health in a fragile state. Anupriya, Sarthak and Malhar began panicking for Kalyani’s wellbeing. But Virat reassured them that she would be ok as long as she was in a calm environment until she recovered completely. He also indicated that it was very important for Kalyani to regain her memory on her own terms and forcefully revealing any disturbing detail from her past could be fatal. All they could do now was to wait for time to wave its healing wand.

It was already way past midnight and noticing that Aaosaheb requested Virat to stay back with them as it was too late to drive back home and also so that they could continue discussing her medical care the next day. Virat obliged and was guided to the guest room by Aaosaheb. As Virat retired to the guest room, Malhar dropped to the floor and began weeping inconsolably with his hands over his head while Anupriya sat on the couch motionless. Sarthak’s heart was being pulled at seeing his loved ones in pain. If one had forgotten everything then the other two were left wondering what they would do now, Sarthak was immensely displeased with the course of the fate. He sat down on the floor hugging Malhar while holding on to Anupriya’s hand in order to comfort her.

Aaosaheb had now returned to the living room and her first instruction was for Avni to leave to the outhouse as this house was only meant for family members. Avni stomped her foot in disagreement and left from there but she was absolutely relieved that Kalyani had lost her memory. Kalyani for the time being at least, was out of her way. Once Avni had left, Aaosaheb locked main door and began a conversation with the remaining people. She looked at Anupriya and suggested that this was not the time to sink into misery, rather it was time to step up and nurse Kalyani back to health. Although Malhar was distraught, he knew that Kalyani’s life was more important to him than their relationship.

Aaosaheb indicated that 7 years also meant that Kalyani would not remember Atul, Raosaheb or Nal’s death. And this was definitely something that they had to refrain from telling her, if what Dr. Virat had told them was true. For the first time in years, Aaosaheb was making sense and everyone was in agreement with her. Since Kalyani was under sedation, Aaosaheb suggested that now would be the perfect time to look around the house and remove any memorabilia from the last 7 years. This would ensure that Kalyani would not find out anything accidentally. All of them agreed and headed out to different locations. As Malhar was about to head out, Aaosaheb taunted him by telling that this was universe’s way of punishing him for hurting his wife. That comment stung him like a bee, but he kept his cool and walked away as Kalyani’s safety was now his priority.

It was almost 5 am, when they were done gathering all the memorabilia into several carton boxes. They moved all these boxes into the workshop and returned to the living room. This night had mentally and physically drained them all. Aaosaheb volunteered to make tea for everyone while the rest of them relaxed on the couch. Just then it flashed to Sarthak that Kalyani would not remember him either. They now had to come up with story that would conveniently cover-up the whereabouts of her dead family members while shedding light on the reason for Anupriya and Sarthak’s marriage and most importantly on Moksh’s identity. Not just that, they also had to figure out a way to break this news to Moksh as he was going to wake the next day ready to spend time with his mother who now didn’t recognise him. It would be cruel to make Moksh hide his identity once again, that would truly put strain on his mental health and Kalyani also would have never wanted to put Moksh through that. They were running out of time and they had no idea what to do.

What story will they cook up now? Will Kalyani ever regain her memories? How is Moksh going to react to all this? How will they convince him? Find out more in Chapter 14.
