@Maroon Yup there were no Blockbusters from 2003-2005! Odd.

@Harley Thanks for your reply :) In regards to single screens shutting down, was it just a case of filmmakers no longer wanting to make content that appeals to single screens? Or was there another reason for single screens shutting?

Single screens were not just shut down. They were broken down and renovated into multiplexes. Which made it difficult for poor people to watch movies as multiplexes had a higher ticket price and audience didn't find that worth it.

Piracy also played it's part. Pirated versions of new movies which were still in theaters, were aired on local cable channels by cable operaters without any repurrcursions from the law. Audience didn't find any use in going to theaters when they could watch the same movies on television.

Filmmakers not making content for single screens, I think it's true for B and C centers. Salman brought this audience back to theaters when he made a come back.

Before Salman, the last time a Bollywood movie which worked in the interiors was Gadar. Salman became the new action hero for the masses with Wanted, which was the first single screen Hit after the multiplex boom.

As said from 2002 B.O. took a steep tumble in admissions across the board. That continued until 2005 (with top earners in the 40cs). 2006 sees a big jump in top earners (70s-80 crs) but Three Idiots in 2009 was the first film with 3+cr footfalls since KG3 in late 2001.

@Harley Thanks for sharing all of that info! :)

@Talis Indeed, I'll have to check but from what I remember the 3 highest footfalls of the decade were Gadar, 3 Idiots, and K3G!

As soon as I think about which film would've been the highest grosser of the year without the pandemic happening, one film immediately comes to mind! Maybe I could write an article on that...
