Dunno why Four Weddings & a Funeral worked. The funeral part was boring and long. Hugh Grant's character was a slacker yet used to hang around with the elites... how? During the first wedding he said the groom went to the same university... means the rest of the friends were also from the same university. His friends and some of his past girlfriends were too rich to go to the same university where a lukkha studied.

ETA: Okay likhte likhte yaad aaya. Jacky Shroff, a chawl dweller, used to hang around with rich guys in the 80s... his looks and likable personality helped there. Maybe its the 80s thing... class division was less back then. Ameer logon ke kids Dhirubhai type school mein nahin... convent schools mein jaate the aur gareeb bachcho ke saath friendship hota tha.
