Here's a possible explanation for Malhar's sudden silent mode any time the subject of him shooting Kalyani comes up: he's protecting someone extremely close to Kalyani, in other words none other than Anu herself. Before laughing at me, hear me out: we know Anu was being given wrong medicines few weeks before everything went to hell, and maybe AS used some of those on her around the time of the kaand, then told her her own version of things, saying that Malhar was trying to kill his wife and she needed to save her. Anu fell for it and arrived when Malhar was out of his mind due to the shock of Moksh' death and had the gun pointed at Kalyani. This was enough for Anu to think AS was right and shoot him, but not being an experienced shooter and due to Kalma being in the middle of a heated fight, the bullet hit Kalyani. The shock was so huge for both survivors that neither one understood what happened at first, and Anu has no memory of the fact but Malhar later somehow realized she was there (maybe Trilok told him?).

Shortly after Kalyani's death, Anu was discovered to be pregnant and Malhar didn't want to ruin what little happiness left in Anusar's life by disclosing the truth. Still, Sarthak got to the truth by himself and they somehow must have tried to make her understand he didn't do it without telling the name of the real culprit, but this is the point AS used in her favor to separate AnuSar and succeeded.
