Chapter 10

Flashback

We had left in the morning, after travelling for half the day we saw a group of fakirs collecting clothes, money and food. Our caraavan stopped. Sahenshah went near them and asked “ Yeh kya hai pir baba.” He asked. “ Paas mein ek gaon me zal zala ane ke kaaran sab barbaad ho gaya hai. Unke liye hum saman ekatha kar rahe hai.” They said .Hearing this I went to them and started opening my jewellery. But the Sahenshah stopped me “Nahi Jodha begam aap paalki mein wasps jaiye.” He said. I was very angry because he had stopped me I thought that he was cruel dint want to help his people. But when I looked around,I saw the Sahenshah talking to them. “ Humne apne begam ko roka kiyun ki begum ki shaan unke gehno se hoti hai unhe utaarne se kaam ho jayegi aur waise bhi humare gehne unke gehno se jyada keemti hai.” Saying so he opened all his jewellery and gave it to them, then he startes opening his crown but they were not ready to take it, but he insisted. Then they tied a pagri on his head and we continued on our journey. I was surprised and felt that the people who say that Jalal does not have a heart are foolish.

Our prayers were over and I got to see a new jalal in this trip. One who loves his people , one who loves God.

The next day Jalal told me that he wants to go hunting.I felt very angry we had come here to pray but he wanted to kill innocent animals “ Hum nahi jaenge.” I said. “ who aap ki marzi. Paar hum jaenge. Aap chahe to aa sakti hai.” He said putting bullets in his gun. I didnt want to go but I was worried. So I went.

Paridhi is quite again. Rajat could feel something had gone wrong, in this short period he had started to almost read her mind. He could see that something was not right. He caressed her hair and asked softly.” Jodha what happened continue.”

Paridhi started crying again.

What have I done? Why was I so foolish? I thought Jalal would kill small animals never thought there would be tigers. I tookout the bullets from his rifle. The tiger attacked us , as it came towards me Sahenshah had taken his dagger out and had killed it but he was seriously injured. As I sat with his head on my lap I didn’t know what to do. I couldn’t let him die. After sometime it has started to rain. I got up and dragged him to the near by pond and washed his eyes and face. He opened his eyes for a moment. “ Humein shama kar dijiye Sehenshah hum aapko chot nahi pahuchana chahte the, hum sirf yeh nahi chahte the ki aap kisi nirdosh pashu ko maare.” Jalal smirked. “ Jungle ka ek usul hai ki zinda rehne ke liye hume ek dusre ka sar kuchal na pardta hai. Humein bachne ke liye sher ko maarna padta hai aur sher bachne ke liye humein. Siyasat ka bhi yehi usul hai. Badshahst ko barkarar rakhne ke liyw khauf ko zinda rakhna padta hai.” He said with difficulty. "Eyesi raaj ka kya laab jisme sirf daar ho. Ek raaja ko apne praja ke dil mein raaj karna chahiye naaki unke jameen par. Khair chodiye aur chup ho jaiye. Hum aapko agra pahuchane ka praband karte hai.” I said

I looked arround and couldn’t find our horse. I got up and ran further. And saw that the horse was standing under a tree due to the rain. I got hold of it the took it to Sahenshah. I picked him up with a lot of difficulty and put him on the horse. Then I sat on the horse. I started riding but it was difficult to keep a hold of Shahenshah while riding so aftre sometime he fell down. I stopped the horse and this time got hold of a creeper. Then I put Shahenshah on the horse again and tied him to me with the creeper. Then I rode as fast as I could. On the way I was met up with Atgha Sahab . Then we went towards Aagra.

“ God she was so brave. My Baaghin .” Rajat thought. Then he stopped himself. Where did that come from ? Baaghin why did he call her that.

Flashback

We had reached Aagra. Ammijaan and Mahamanga kept asking me what had happened to him. We took Jalal up to his room. The Hakim was called they started their work. When I told Rukaiya begam about what happened to Jalal and how it happened she slapped me. I went to my room and told reva to get the ingredients for the lep which I had learned from the Hakim of Gwalior. I started making the lep. In the meantime the royal Hawkins were struggling to keep the Sahenshah breathing . After half an hour I sent the lep to the hakims, then I sat in front of my kanha to pray. I had my head at his feet. I had never thought that I would pray for the life of the person whom I hated so much. After some time Ammi jaan came and told me that my lep was not working Jalal had fever. She wanted to hide me but I didn’t want to run so she ordered me to listen to her.

After a lot of struggle I got the news that the hakims of Gwalior had arrived I ran to Jalal’s room. When the Hakim from Gwalior saw me he smiled and said “ Hum jante the ki aap hi hogi jinhone yeh lep banaye hai.” Everyone was shocked, he then said “ chaukiye mat, Hum pehle Amer Ja chule hai In ke bhai jaan Sujamal ko bhi shikar ke waqt chot nahi thi tab humne unka ilaaj kiya tha nahi humne Jodha begum ko bhi yeh dawa banana khaya tha. Aap ne bilkul sahi illaj kiya hai begum sahiba.” The hakim from Gwalior said. “ Phir yeh bukhar.” Asked the royal Hakims “ yeh illaj ka hi hiss hai, Sahenshah ko kabhi bhi hosh aa sakta hai.” The Hakim said.

As he said this I saw Sahenshah open his eyes, he looked arround and then straight at me. It was a relief see him awake. After some time he looked at me then pointed to the Jug of water kept on the side table. I understood he wants water “ Nahi Sahenshah abhi aap pani nahi pi sakte.” I said. “ Kiyun !” Said Rukaiya “ Agar Jalal ko pani chahiye to usse Pani mileage.” She said and moved to give water, I stopped her “ Nahi unke sehat me liye thik nahi” slowly everyone left. Ammijaan wanted me to stay with him. So moti came and I went to Shahenshah’s hamam and took a bath and changed my clothes.

I stayed the night with him. I was sitting beside his bed had fell asleep with my head on the head board in the middle of the night I felt his hand on my forehead caressing me.

Rajat got a flash of image he saw Jodha sitting beside him. Her head was on his pillow., He picked up his head and caressed her forehead, she was so dedicated.

We are in Amer. I couldn’t couldn’t believe that sukanya is getting married. Do you know Sahenshah has fixed her match. I cant believe it. Today is sangeet I'm getting ready. Jalal has sent me a green lehenga. Though I hate it but for some reason I still wear it after all it is from my in laws house cant insult them. Now I leave my room with reva and start going down. There is Jalal standing with maasa , sukanya and shivani. Jalal is starring at me ,I know he is liking me after all I'm.wearing his favourite colour. When I go down Suknay teases me “ Aaj.suraj Kaun si disha se uga hai.” I ask “ kiyun?” “ Nahi Aap.aur hara rang sath sat.” She asked. “Sukanya inhone yeh rang humare liye pehna hai. Humein hara rang khaas.pasand hai, aur khaas kar Jodhaa begum.par.”He said with a smile. “ Chalen .” I said with a sarcastic smile. We all went in. The celebration started. I noticed Jalal kept looking at me I tried to look away but I couldn’t. His eyes were like a magnet that kept pulling me towards him. I looked away.

Suddenly sound of shouting started coming from the other side of the tent. Then we all saw Hawai Sahenshah's beloved elephant coming towards us. Jalal ran towards it calling it by its name. I felt like my heart had come to my mouth. I knew he could stop hawai but what if.... oh no why am I thinking like this. I watched in awe how easily Jalal tackled the elephant. It was breathtaking. Later we came to know that hawai was fed some kind of drug. That means someone wanted to hurt Jalal...but who.

Jalal again proved that everyone was wrong he did have a heart. He did not react to the attack. But my heart was beating very fast as I realized the seriousness of the matter.I did not know whether I was scared for Jalal or for Amer. I was happy that Jalal did not react but then I was scared what if something happened. The next day I was going to the mandir dadi sa told him to join too. When we reached the mandir and went in in the mandir I remembered the pledge I had taken, but couldn’t fulfill. I had tears of frustration in my eyes. Jalal saw it and asked me “ kya hua Jodha begum.” Then I told him about my pledge. He quietly went to the idol sat down in front of it and put his head on his feet. I was surprised. He got up and told me “ kadmon mein sir rakhne ke liye sir katane ki jarurat nahi sur jhukana bhi kafi hota hai.” I was so surprised did I mean so much to him did my pledge have so much of importance to him

Chapter 11

There he is hiding behind the pillar and looking at me. He knows he is not allowed in the mehendi and sangeet, I had told him in the morning, but see he still came shameless. The way he stares at me with that smile on his face it does something to me. It sends shiver down my spine. Why does my heart want him to look at me like that? My breath becomes faster. Hey kanha help me. “ Jodha !” maasa called. I came out of my reverie to look at the place he was standing he was not there. “ Ladoo Zara mehndi ki thal kanha ke mandir me rakhi le kaar aana. Aree kya soch rahi hai jaa jaldi jaa.” I sprinted towards the mandir. Sukanya called me “ Jiji kaha jaa rahi ho.” I looked back and told, her “ abhi aati hun” kept on going and was not paying attention and I bumped into someone, who held on to me by my waist. I looked up to see Jalal. He had his ever present smirk on his face, and looked at me with a kind of passion that seemed to scare me. His deep dark brown magnetic eyes seemed to do something to me, I had forgotten where I was going. He softly caressed my cheeks, I felt goose bumps on my skin. Then he came near to my ears very near I could feel his hot breath on my ears and cheeks “ Aaj aap behad khoobsoorat lag rahi thi. Jaan lane ka irada hai kya.” I felt myself blush. What was happening to me I should push him away but I just couldn’t. I closed my eyes my heart was beating faster. I wanted to run and stay back all at the same time. He let me go, I looked at him then ran away.

When I reached the temple I sat at kanha’ feet. “ Nahi kanha yeh kya hai. Hum unkeliye kewal aur kewal ghrina mehsus kar sakte hai, yeh nahi. Unho ne amer par hamla kiya. Raja Suryabhan ko bhi maar diya. Phir kiyun hum unke taraf akarshit ho rahe hai.” I put my head on kanha's feet and sobbed my heart out. I had never felt this way before, not even with Suryabhan. I suddenly saw the mehendi thal and picked it up and left for the hall where the function was being held.

Rajat felt the same kind of heat in his loins he seemed to remember the look in her eyes. What was all this?

Ratanpur fort that is the price of this wedding. But how can they ask for something that doesn’t belong to Amer. It belongs to Shahenshah. Hey kanha why are you doing this now what will happen? I know when Jalal is saying he did not promise the fort to them he didn’t. But what do I do bapusa and maasa are worried. As a result I had fight with him. I know I’m wrong I should have sided him he is my husband but what do I do I can’t watch bapusa and maasa worried. But then I realized I’m making mistake by not supporting him. I also found out all this was Sariffuddins plan to create a rift between me and him. So I went and apologized to him next think I’m seeing he has given the fort as a gift to sukanya, but after teaching Ratan Singh’s father a lesson. I was so happy. I didn’t know how to thank him but I had to. So I went to my room and saw him sitting on the bed. “ Aiye Jodha Begum. Lagta hai aapko kuch kehna hai.” He asked “ haan woh humein dhanyawad kehna tha. To bus dhanyawad aapne jo kuch bhi kiya uska liye.” I said. “ Kabul hai” he said.

The next day we left for Agra. It was winter and the north winds had hit us hard. With a lot of difficulty and struggle we reached Agra after 2 days. It was afternoon when we reached Agra. As we entered the fortress we were met by maulvis who were protesting against the king for his sojourn in the temple of Amer. But how had this news reached them? What a mess? They wanted me to change my religion or else Shahenshah had to leave his throne. Rukaiya begum and Mahamanga seemed utterly pleased with the situation as now they could force me to change my religion. But Ammijaan stood by me. Even Jalal didn’t force me. In the end after the interventions of Salim Christi baba the situation was resolved.

I am standing at the tulsi munch and doing my regular puja I asked Moti for the aarti thal but she seems lost. “ Moti kaha khoi ho. Aarti ki thal do na" I said. “ Woh main Adham Khan ko dekh rahi thi, kirin nirlaj hai ek choto si balika ko bhi nahi chodta. Abhi Abhi us ladki maa ko yeh kehkar bheja ke bachi hai khelne do par phir use apne piche piche Kuchar leke ja rahi hai.” She said. “Jane do chalo.”I said.

But after a few days even I saw the same behaviour where Adham misbehaved with that girl. I tried to stop him but no use then I complained to Sahenshah. Who in turn called Adham to Deewan e khaas for a hearing. In Deewan e khaas Adham said he wants to marry the girl. Nothing was decided that day.I went to Shahenshah and asked him what he thinks is it right that just because the man is strong and powerful he can marry a small girl against her will. To my surprise Jalal gave me a promise that he would not let there be any injustice. I was happy. I turned to go , but then I came back and said. “ Humein ab aapse ghrina nahi hai, haan ek samay tha jab hum aapse ghrina karte the par ab aap eishe nahi rage aap woh hai jo humse biswas karte hai aur him bhi aap pe biswas karne lage hai.” I smiled and went away
