I have many chunkers on my list and they really intimidate me. The worry is that if I don’t get through the book, it might put me in a reading slump which sometimes gets difficult to get out of.

Some out of the many chunkers on my TBR are -

1. Anna Karenina (which I just started reading)

2. A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth

3. The Blind Assassin by Maragaret Atwood

4. It by Stephen King

I know I said three, but these are 4 are pretty high up on my TBR.
I have many more chunkers on my list but these are priority.

You girls are so into reading Fantasy and that’s one genre I can’t get myself to read. Besides Harry Potter I haven’t read any Fantasy novels. They just don’t excite me and I also find the length of these novels intimidating. If you are invested in this genre it’s probably really easy to fly through those massive books.

@Aparna: My pet peeve is poor grammar, use of slang and something I’ve realised recently, lack of quotation marks.

I’ve come across books which have the word pissed instead of angry or annoyed and that’s something I just can’t overlook. It’s a word I can’t stand when used in daily conversation, so seeing it in a book is an absolute no no.

my rating: 5/5

I really liked how this book portrayed what constant abandonment does to you. How it shapes you as a person and the baggage that comes along with it. How never feeling loved makes you either mistrust others or end up falling for even a bit of affection. Kya's change in perception of the world everytime she learned a new information on behavior of humans and other organisms throughout the book was heartbreaking. No spoilers but there was a scene where she tries to find reasons in Biology as to why a member of the family left her which truly made me tear up.

I can also see why many people don't like this book. It's extremely character driven and the story doesn't concentrate completely on the mystery, it does more on the prejudices of the town Kya lives in. If you can't connect with Kya and her life then I honestly cannot see you getting any enjoyment out of it. I mean, how many versions of the protagonist cooking fishes and grits can you read before you quit? 😆

----

I think at the end of the month, we can have more detailed discussion on each aspect of the book if everyone who read the book would join. (The poems and the A.H. and any quotes that stood out) And, were you satisfied/happy with the whodunnit? I personally wasn't a very big fan of the reveal but I wasn't even invested in the mystery to begin with.

I’m glad you liked it. I liked how you wrote a review about the main theme of abandonment and what it does to you. The book is character driven rather than plot driven and you are right when you say that if you can’t connect to Kya the chances of liking the book are pretty less.
I have a couple of issues with the book which we will discuss at the end of the month.

Maybe you could put that aside for a while and pick up a genre you like or a short story to read.

As much as I’d like to include IT as part of the book club (so that it would motivate me to read the book), it’s too massive a book to be read in a month.
Has anyone here read IT or any other book by Stephen King?

I have read only 2 of his books - Carrie & Pet Semetary. His writing is a little dense and takes a while to get into.

I have never read a Stephen King book but I had started reading Carrie some time back. Never got to read beyond the first couple of chapters. You are right; the story was hard to get into, mostly due to his writing style. But I've read books by other authors where I had the same problem at first but ended up loving them once I got the hang of their style. That's why I'd like to give King's books a chance too.

Maybe we can read a shorter book of his. Carrie isn't a big book. There must be others like it as well. I'd really like to finally read something by Stephen King. I just need a little push.😆

We can try that although 3 months might be too much for a book. Maybe we could choose IT for 1 month and discuss one third of the book and those who liked the book can continue with the book at their own pace.
A Stephen King book is most definitely going to be part of the book club very soon.
