Bipasha Basu has finally made a comeback to acting after a five-year break, though she didn’t realise the duration of it. The actor claims she rightfully deserved this break, which allowed her to connect with her husband Karan Singh Grover, her parents and her sisters. The Raaz actor has now made her digital debut alongside Karan with their new web show, titled Dangerous. Produced by singer Mika and written by Vikram Bhatt, the suspense thriller brings them together on screen after their 2015 film, Alone.
In a candid conversation with Hindustan Times, the couple opened up about their first project together after marriage and spilled the beans about their real-life love story. They also talked about a decision which turned out to be in their favour ahead of lockdown. Excerpts:
What brings you together on screen after 5 years?
Bipasha: Dangerous was worth it for us to come together. As individual actors, we both liked our parts and the content which the show has to provide. That’s a wise decision for an actor when you like it and then you know your husband is playing your co-star; it’s a bonus. It was fascinating because it was the role of a Scotland Yard detective. I have been a big fan of all detective series. I see all the international shows where they have great, female protagonists.
Karan: She is actually a detective in every show we watch together because she is always trying to solve everything. She wants to solve everything before the last episode.

How did you spend time at home during lockdown? What keeps you motivated?
Karan: Just waking up before sunrise and watching the sunset, that’s enough motivation for me. The world is in a process of rebirth. The motivation is to try to be our better selves. How do you make yourself better? By working on yourself.
Tell us the story of your romantic proposal.
Bipasha: The most romantic thing was that I recorded the proposal without even knowing that he was going to propose. It was the New Year’s eve in Koh Samui. I love fireworks, so I was shooting the fireworks and shooting ourselves. Suddenly, he started saying something amid loud noise and then suddenly a ring popped into the frame while I was shooting and then my phone fell.
It was quite shocking for me because I was not prepared for it. I was tongue tied, crying and rambling some stupid stuff. He was sitting on his knees. It was really sweetly planned and even the effort he put in making the ring was really sweet. I love my ring. He worked with the stylist and the designer; it’s not something that he picked.
All your social media posts come with a hashtag #monkeylove. Kindly explain.
Karan: I have been a monkey since I was a kid because I am always hanging upside down and using all four limbs. She is a hidden crazy little monkey. So when two monkeys fall in love, it’s monkey love.
Tell us about your first trip together.
(After struggling to recall) Bipasha: Goa. We have been to too many places and have gone many times to the same places. Two months that the world was open, we were travelling. We went to Maldives in January for my birthday and then again in February for his birthday. We were feeling guilty for going twice. We never knew the lockdown would happen. We were like ‘Thank god, we went twice’.

Bipasha Basu and Karan Singh Grover are back together on screen in the web show Dangerous, five years after they starred together in the film Alone. In these 5 years, the couple tied the knot and set up a home together. While their social media antics have kept followers engaged so far, the two are now appearing in a thriller show to entertain fans on a streaming platform.
Talking about reuniting with her husband on the sets again, Bipasha says, “He’s a lot of fun on set. He's my entertainment at home, definitely. I don't need anybody else, because Karan entertains me all the time at home. But on set, he entertains everybody. He understands that when I'm doing a serious scene I need a little bit of peace and quiet. And when he's fooling around a lot, I will be like, ‘Karan, please.’ And he gets it and keeps quiet then. So basically, the dynamics on the sets would be only 1% of the husband and wife. It's 99% the actor first.”
Even though she is making her acting comeback with Karan again, Bipasha says she was consciously avoiding projects with her husband so far.
“I was offered a lot of work with Karan and it was a conscious decision that I felt that a couple should not be doing everything together. Endorsing and appearances are okay, but when it comes to long-term content, you have to take a decision as an individual actor and never think of it as a couple. Even now, I am not at all pitching this show as a couple,” she says.
Bipasha says she was chilling at home after her wedding and did not even think of it as a break from acting. She was not even looking at scripts, and it took a lot of coaxing to get her on board.
“Karan was signed before, because I was not open to listening to stories or taking narrations. I was chilling. And then everybody thought that I would be really good for this part. And they were kind of coaxing me. So I happened to read it, and then I was like, ‘Oh, I like it.’ And then I told Karan, ‘Okay, now I'm also for this. So you're going to be my poster again. And that's how it happened,” she says.
Dangerous is a suspense thriller produced by Mika Singh and Vikram Bhatt. Bhatt has also written the story, while Bhushan Patel has directed it. It was shot as a film and then converted into episodes and released on MX Player on August 14.
