Was your question answered? Looks like there are different meanings to the word, and colour is one of them. Apparently, there are Arabic and Jewish meanings to the word as well, although for us, the hindi one is probably what's appropriate.

as far as i know...abir means color... not specifically one color...

I've seen both meanings ruhi, and as meera said show mein bhi Mishti says gulaal ke jagah abir
