I think things are changing and will change completely when Khans, Akshay and Ajay will completely fade off. They have such big star power that actresses are completely overshadowed, that's why Vidya, Kangana are considered women who carry movie on their own but not all obviously. But with new actors coming even actors who attract masses like Varun ,Ranveer actresses are more significant. Obviously, patriarchal mindset is still there in our society which will definitely take time to get removed . Even women don't go to halls for watching movies based on women.

Also, like someone said that women movies are too preachy and serious type that's why it happens, but we have also example of Tanu Weds Manu where Kangana did rule box office with that flawed comic role in that movie.

We need more movies and act like that.

In all honesty, no they cant.

I have yet to see an actress consistently give big openings just because they are in it.

I would say alia is close, as all her films have earned pretty big opening numbers however...she has benefited from ensemble casts, patriotic themes, reputable directors, and big stars like srk being apart of her films, and using holidays to release her films.

So even her I doubt.

That is because they don't seem to have a large dedicated fanbase like their male counterparts do that can make even a not-so-good film a hit. Female stars do have a fanbase but not as big as male superstars, ofcourse Madhuri Dixit was an exception to that.
