Part 28

Mini was coming back to home from orphanage. She replayed the conversation she had with Mrs. Shah after she completed her story.

“Neil should know this. Till when you will bear this alone? You were not at fault then why you have to stay away from your son?” told Mini. “No, I am afraid that Neil wont be able to take it. He hero worshiped his father all his life now listening to the truth his world will crash down and What if it affects his mental health….No…the risk is too much. I can bear his hatred but cannot jeopardize his health.” Mrs. Shah said with finality. “But he was just a child back then now is mature enough not only to understand all this but also to face the reality.” Mini had argued. “What if he doesn’t believe me? What if he thinks that I am making this all up just to come into his life?” Mrs. Shah put forward her doubts. “We will take Naeem bi’s help. She also knows the truth she will tell him that you are not wrong and she also have those divorce papers and FIR copy we can show them to Neil as evidence.” Mini tried to convince her. “But…” Mrs. Shah again tried to object but Mini held her hands in assurance. “Please trust me, truth has to come out. That’s the only way he will come out of his past. He needs to know what sacrifices you have made for him. If you want your son back then please tell him everything.” Mini requested.

“How? He doesn’t even wants to see my face. How will I communicate with him?” asked Mrs. Shah. “At our home. This weekend, I have invited you remember and he doesn’t know your true identity. I will tell you the time when to come.” Mini convinced her. Mrs. Shah nodded in agreement. For the first time in her life Mrs. Shah was hopeful that everything is going to be fine between her and Neil. The confidence with which Mini had persuaded her gave her the much needed encouragement. Mini came back home and directly went to Naeem bi’s room. She told her everything about Neil’s mom and how they were thinking of telling everything to Neil on the day of house warming party. First Naeem bi was shocked but when she came to know that Neil’s mother has also agreed she also gave her consent to it.

Finally the D- day came. Mini’s parents and Saroj mami, her friends and all of Neil’s friends and close relatives were invited. Everyone praised the new interiors. Mini had made the previous plain white house colorful and vibrant. Previously if it screamed of only class and elegance of its residents now it also conveyed their beautiful life moments. With earthen lamps and chandeliers Mini has given the touch of ethnicity to this otherwise modern house. Saroj as usual looked everything with wide eyes and couldn’t help but feel jealous while Mini’s parents feel blessed to see their daughter happy in her life. They gave Mini an idol of Lord Ganesha as a gift and ask her to put it in the temple of her house.

Babita was happily surprised to see Mini welcoming the guests and taking care of all the arrangements. She was dressed in classy silk handloom champagne color saree and contrast sleeveless blouse for the occasion. She greeted everyone from her family and friends heartily hugging them or touching their feet while she greeted everyone from Neil’s circle formally with that weird gesture of half hugging and touching their cheek with your own cheek. Babita praised Naeem bi in her heart as she could see how well Naeem bi has groomed her otherwise jhalli daughter. And Mini has found the perfect balance between the two worlds. To her people she was still that bubbly chirpy somewhat stupid girl Mini while to others she was this elegant, scrumptious and well mannered lady of the house Mrs. Mini Neil Oberoi. Babita also noticed how she and Neil were stealing glances with each other and talking in gestures. She sent a silent prayer to God to save the blissful world of these two from the evil eyes of the world.

One kid bumped into Mini and few splashes of his drink came on her saree. “Be careful baby.” She said and ruffled his hair and went to her room to clean her saree. Neil saw her and quietly followed her. She splashed some water on her saree and cleaned it. She turned around to go out from her room when suddenly Neil barged in and locked the room. “Neil! What are you doing? Why are you locking the door?” asked Mini confused. “Because I want to kiss you and I don’t want any disturbance.” Neil replied as he cornered her. “What! Are you out of your mind. There are lots of guests out there and you and me both are here locked in our room…what will they think?” Mini admonished him. “No one will notice for few minutes.” Neil said as he kissed her on cheeks. “But we are the host of the party we have to be present there.” Mini said as she tried to push him away. “Naeem bi is there she will manage for some time.” Neil replied as he started placing light kisses on her chin and neck. “Neil, you will ruin my makeup.“ said Mini as she again tried to stop him. “And you are ruining my mood.” Neil growled in frustration as he pinned her hands above her head and started kissing her.

“Neil…Neil…stop it…what has gotten into you suddenly?” Mini asked as she giggled at his desperateness. “Not suddenly….I am looking at you since morning. You are looking breathtakingly beautiful in this saree. Very rarely you wear sarees but whenever you wear them you look extra hot and I don’t want to miss this chance. ”Neil said as he looked into her eyes lovingly. Mini looked at him, he looked relaxed and happy. She saw immense love in his eyes…. only if he could confess it. This reminded her of her plan to tell him the truth about his mother. “God knows how will he take it and how will he react but one thing was sure that it will give him pain. Only few hours left for this carefree and happy Neil why ruin it for him” Mini thought and gave in as she let him indulge her in passionate kiss. What started with just a kiss turned out into a full make out session when after some time Mini noticed the wall clock. She shrieked and somehow pushed away Neil from herself. “Stop it now, we are here since 15 minutes. All guests must be wondering about us.” Said Mini as she tried to catch her breath. Neil stopped and looked at her, “Are you sure you want to go out? I mean lets go for a quickie. It will take only few more minutes.” Neil suggested. “Neil just get out of here.” Replied Mini as she giggled and started pushing him out of the door. Then she suddenly stopped him. “You changed your mind?” asked Neil hopefully. “No, I am just making sure that people will not laugh at you.” Replied Mini and wiped lipstick marks from his face and neck. After that she pushed him out of the door and herself went for a touch up and re drape her saree.

Party came to the end and all the guests started leaving. “Mini, its been a long time since your last visit to Patiala. Please come with us at least for two days.”Hanuman Singh told to Mini. “Dad, cant come now. Really busy now a days. But I will come next month for sure.” Replied Mini as she didn’t want to leave alone Neil now. “Why don’t you guys stay here for few days?” Neil suggested. “No beta, Beti ke ghar is tarah rehna achha nahi hota and Mini ke papa ko chutti bhi nahi milengi abhi.” Babita replied while Mini rolled her eyes at her old views. “We will leave now. We will stay at Saroj mami’s house for tonight and then leave in the morning.” Said Hanuman Singh as they took their leave.

When all the people left Mini messaged Mrs. Shah to come as she didn’t want to create scene in front of everyone so had already thought of calling her after the party. In half an hour Mrs. Shah came there. “Neil, I told you that I have invited Mrs. Shah to the party…right?” said Mini. “Ya, that lady you met in the convention. I forgot to ask why she didn’t come at the party?” asked Neil. “She has come now.” Replied Mini nervously. “Now? Where is she?” asked Neil confused. Mini went out and brought Mrs. Shah with her. Mrs. Shah was a nervous wreck when she entered the Oberoi mansion. Suddenly all the pleasant- un pleasant memories she had in this house came back to her. Her hands were all sweaty and she was shaking. Mini understood her condition and gave her support. Neil was stunned to see his mom in front of him in this house. He couldn’t react for few seconds then he looked at Mini who was supporting her and she understood that Mrs. Shah Mini used to talk about was none other than his mom ex Mrs. Oberoi. “Oh, toh aap hain Mini ki Mrs. Shah. Maan na padega achha bewakoof banaya aapne meri wife ko…kya socha tha uske bahane se phir se meri life mere ghar mein entry mil jayegi.” Said Neil with gritted teeth as he tried to control his anger.

“Neil, I knew for some time now that she is your mom.” Replied Mini. Neil was shocked to hear this. He looked at Mini as if she has betrayed him. “You knew about her than also you kept meeting her? you know right what she did to me…what she did to my dad?” asked Neil as he experienced nothing short of a rage rising inside him. “Neil, listen to me. You don’t know anything about her. You don’t know how much pain she has endured for you all her life.” Mini answered. “Looks like she has brainwashed you. This woman standing before me is nothing short of a clever fox. She used my dad all her life for his wealth. She played with his emotions.When my dad used to work in office she used to be in her lover’s arms. She was cheating him when he was alive also then when he died she took the first opportunity and married her lover. She didn’t even think about me for once. She is an unfaithful wife, a bad mother and a black spot in the name of woman. ”Neil shouted at the top of his voice.

Mrs.Shah started sobbing as she heard what her son thinks about her. Mini couldn’t bear her insult, “Is this the way to talk to your mother Neil. If not as your mother then at least respect her as a woman. Is this the way you treat a woman…name calling and butchering her character?” Mini asked angrily. “She is not my mother. And you seem pretty impressed with her…why? Are you planning to do the same with me?” Neil asked Mini as he pulled her arm with jerk. “Leave me Neil, How can you ask such question from me? And for your kind information your mother didn’t do anything wrong with your dad. It was other way round. Your dad was the one who cheated her…not just one time…but multiple times. He was the one who used her who made her life hell. He even used to beat her. And you know how he died in a car crash? He was with some call girl that night they both were drunk that’s how they ended up in an accident.” Mini replied angrily. She didn’t mean to break this truth in this way but the way Neil questioned her made her angry and she blurted out everything.

“Mini!” Neil screamed as he pulled her towards him holding her arms. “How. Dare. You? How dare you say such things about my dad.” Asked Neil as he looked at her with fury. Mini gulped hard looking at him so angry. He looked intimidating and dangerous right now. She was scared of him. Mrs. Shah and Naeem bi were scared too of his reaction and they tried to interfere. “Stay out of it.” Neil threatened both of them. Both the ladies took few steps back as they couldn’t hold his angry glare. “Take your words back Mini or else….” Neil said in dangerously low voice. Mini was scared of him right now as she had never seen him this angry that he became physical at least not on her but she knew that if she stepped back now she could not make him understand ever. So she took a deep breath. “Its the reality. Your father was an abusive, debaucher, disloyal husband. He destroyed your mom’s life. You have misunderstood her all your life giving her more pain. And I wont take my words back. What will you do? Raise your hand on me? Then do it….I am not afraid of you….do it and prove that you are your father’s son after all.” Said Mini challenging him.

Neil gasped listening to her words. He felt like she has pierced his heart. He left her and looked away hurt. “Is that what you think about me? After all these months of togetherness….you think I can ever raise my hand on you? I thought you knew what I feel for you…I will kill myself before hurting you.” Said Neil as he broke down. “And what about you? Do you know me really? You think I can lie to you on something like this?” Mini also asked feeling hurt. Mini came near him and turned him towards her. “Neil,look at me. I know its very difficult for you to believe this. After all you have lived your whole life with this lie but believe me what I am saying is true. Even Naeem bi knows it.” Mini said and looked at Naeem bi. Neil also looked at Naeem bi in shock and she nodded in yes. Neil closed his eyes. He took support of Mini to stand straight as he felt that his world was crashing down on him. Mini made him sit on sofa and gave him water but he refused to drink and threw the glass away. Mini hugged him to console him but he pushed her away from him and tried to get up and go away. “No Neil, agar aaj tum baat beech mein chhod kar chale gaye toh ye sach phir se adhura hi reh jayega.” Mini said as she held his hand.

Mini made him sit down again and asked Mrs. Shah to tell Neil everything from the starting as she had told her that day. Mrs. Shah started telling him everything and Neil listened to her sitting there holding Mini’s hand. He couldn’t hold his tears. They were flowing continuously from his eyes. It pained Mini to see him like this. In all these months she had never seen him crying. He was always the stronger one among them. She always needed his support but today she was lending her shoulder to him to cry. As Mrs. Shah reached the point where she told Neil about his accident and how he forgot about his parents fight, Mini stopped her and asked Naeem bi to bring those divorce papers and FIR’s copy. Mini didn’t want to leave any doubt in Neil’s mind now.

She showed him the documents, “Neil you have seen this documents and your mom dad’s fight in your childhood…you don’t remember now but you have seen your dad hitting your mom.” Said Mini. Neil took those documents in his hands. He read the words ‘Divorce Deed” written in bold and capital letters. "I want divorce from you", "Shut up you b***h" suddenly these words started ringing in his head. His hands started shaking and he felt as if an electric current ran in his mind from his spine. Documents slipped from his hands and he held his head with both of his hands. He felt excruciating pain in his head and he screamed in agony. Mini, Naeem bi and Mrs. Shah looked horrified as Neil fell down on the floor and writhed in pain all the while holding his head. Neil closed his eyes as flashes of his long forgotten memory started coming back to him. He could see himself hiding behind the door and his dad and mom shouting at each other. Her mom throwing divorce papers at his dad and then that moment came when his dad slapped his mom. Neil shouted “Mom” and passed out.
