PART 156
The monitor flashed between the signs of whites and reds as the silent beeping shadowed all other sounds of the night.
Ram sat at Siyas head as she lay, closing her eyes and taking slow breaths. The doctor unlatched the blood pressure monitor as he looked up relieved.
“110/60, her pressure’s fallen a bit, I think from all the sudden exertion, but nothing to be worried about. I am prescribing these medicines, just get them and start the dosage now itself.” He scribbled on his pad and handed the paper to Lakshman, who stood next to him anxiously and walked away in search of the same.
“Is the ORS ready?” The doctor asked, when at that very moment Shruti walked in with an attendant and the suspension.
“I think we should wake her up,” the doctor said.
Ram slowly ran his fingers over her head and moved strands of hair shying on her face, behind her ear. He couldnt bear to see her, the strong woman that she was, this way.
“Siya,” he said softly. “Please wake up. You need to have the medicines, and then you can take rest again.”
“
Siya mumbled incoherently in her sleep when Urmila took her hand in hers and sat by her side.
“Di, Wake up please. Its alright, we all are here with you. You are fine.”
Her lashes fluttered as she mustered all her strength and opened her eyes, adjusting to the dim lights of the room.
Her eyes on their own accord found Ram to her side, his gaze clearly indicating how his heart was moments away from clenching itself to pain.
“Thank god,” he muttered softly. He sighed deeply as he and Urmila helped Siya sit with her back against the headboard.
“What has happened to me? I didnt even realise, I felt my head spin and then…”
“Nothing to worry about dear,” the doctor said. “Your blood pressure had fallen. Here, have this ORS, and then take the medicines, you’ll feel better.”
Ram passed her a glance of assurance as Siya did as advised.
Janak stepped ahead as he ran his hand over Siyas head.
“Its alright Siya, your mother too had such fits sometimes. Dont worry, we all are here with you.”
Siya nodded calmly as Lakshman entered with the medicines and handed them to the doctor.
“Once you finish the ORS, take a 10 minute gap and then take this medicine, okay? Ive written down the rest, take them from Time to time and make sure you take your meals properly. Take care, dear.”
She thanked him as Janak sat by her side, allowing Ram to drop him to his car.
—————
“Dont worry Ram, I think it is a bit genetic as well, I heard her mother had such bouts as well. Maybe the sudden stress got to her. But, there is one thing you should take care about.”
“What, Sir?” Ram asked anxiously.
“Actually,” The doctor replied. “I suspect she had developed anaemia. Her skin was looking quite pale and I saw a few other indications of the same. So, please make sure she takes care of herself that way. And..”
“And?”
“ Be very careful if you wish to opt for a natural pregnancy now, she is frail as it is.I didnt want to tell all of this in front of everyone, but being your family doctor, I thought I should tell you this.”
He patted Ram slowly as he sat inside the car.
“Dont worry, she will be fine. You take care of her very well, I know. Let me know if theres any problem.Good night.”
Ram thanked him in a feeble voice as the car sped off.
In the few moments of silence, he took a deep breath to compose himself.
There was so much she didnt show in front of him. Her pains, the brunt she had faced. Yet, she devoted herself so deeply to all of them, that she forgot to keep herself safe along the way.
And what he had said about a pregnancy… No, he couldn’t tell Siya anything now. He had seen the way her face would light up when she looked at parents walk the streets with their childrens’ small hands entwined with theirs, and she had expressed her desires to him, unknowingly. But risking her life at this stage.. Ram stood at the brink of dilemna, when he realised, it would be best to not let her know of anything right now. He believed in the fact that all that was to happen would happen for good, and Sighed, as she left all thoughts at the feet of all those above.
“Sir, is everything okay?”
Ram turned to find Pawan smiling softly at him.
“Yeah, sure. Is she feeling better now?”
“Yes Sir,” he added. “We’ve given her the medicines also. I think you should go and ask her to take rest.”
Ram nodded as he followed Pawan upstairs.
————————
“There you go, Bhaiyya has come,” Urmila said as Ram stepped Into the room and passed her a smile.
“She will feel better tomorrow itself, Im sure.” Lakshman said. “I think we all should too go and let Bhabi take rest, and Bhaiyya, please call us if you need anything.”
“Sure,” he said as he wished them a good night and switched the lights off.
“Hey,” he said, running her hand through her hair and letting soft air from the windows fall on her face.
Siya smiled as she looked up at him expectantly.
“What did the doctor say?”
“He said that you are extremely childish and should learn to take care of yourself first.”
“Ram!” She chimed slowly, placing her head in the crook of his neck.
“Its nothing,” he said. “Just maintain a proper diet over the next few days and sleep well. Ill take care of everything else.”
She smiled as she let out a deep breath.
“Funny how I ended up troubling you all like this… Our mothers took care of us children without complaining once, and here we…”
“Its not that Siya,” Ram said calming her down. “Each person has their own fears and stresses. Today was such a rollercoaster, it is absolutely normal for it to get on your nerves. Now come on, close your eyes. Good night.”
“Good night,” she whispered as she drifted into her dreams.
Ram gulped as he glanced at her innocent yet brave face. How it was possible to love someone more and more with each moment, he failed to realise.
———————————
“Good morning Bhabi!”
Lakshman got up from his seat excitedly at the breakfast table and welcomed her.
Siya smiled widely, back to her usual jovial self as she joined the others.
“How are you feeling today Bhabi?”
“Im much better, thank you.”
“You scared us a little Di,” Maanvi joked.
“Aww, Im so sorry,” she said. “Promise, I will take care of myself from now on.”
All of them laughed as Siya looked around.
“Where is Pawan? Has he left already?”
“No no Bhabi, he would never leave without telling you,” Shatrughan said. “He has gone to receive Sujit and his family from the airport.”
“Oh! Thats great!” Siya chimed as they all finished breakfast.
“Siya, here, take this.”
Ram handed Siya a tablet and a glass of water as she gulped them down.
Suddenly, the doors to the mansion opened as a jostling was heard, telling them of their long awaited guests.
“Hey, Sujit!”
Lakshman walked ahead as he took him into a tight hug, when his eyes fell on the boy behind him.
“Oh, my god Angad, look at you!”
The young boy was now a tall, smart teen, a perfect image of his fathers.
He stepped ahead to touch Lakshman’s feet, when Lakshman stopped him and hugged him tightly.
“My god, you’ve grown up so much! How are you?”
Angad looked at him astounded.
“You… You remember me Bhaiyya?”
“Ofcourse I do! And Ram Bhaiyya..”
“Angad, is that you?” All of them turned to Ram as he came and engulfed them in a big hug. He welcomed Ruma warmly as she walked up to Siya and the others to introduce herself.
“Sujit, we really missed you at the party,” Ram said.
“Me too Sir, Im sorry I couldnt attend. Actually, our little champ had his cricket selections that day. He is now officially a member of a Under 17 India team.”
“Oh my god!” Lakshman exclaimed. “Angad, you have made my childhood dream come true. I am so happy for you.”
“Bhaiyya,” he said after a pause. “You used to play cricket?”
Lakshman laughed to himself, as if having gone back a millennia in his memories.
“Trust me Angad, I am as shocked as you,” Urmila said, as Angad hid a slight laugh.
“Haha, very funny.” Lakshman said sarcastically. “I did, and at one time, I was so adamant on becoming a cricketer that dad hid my kit away somewhere so that I would spend some time studying instead of playing outside.”
All of them shared a laugh, as they were led inside.
“Sujit,” Ram asked the former softly. “Mrs. Tara….”
“I did ask her Sir,” he added. “But she didnt want to travel so far. She has found her peace in managing the resort and attending to everyone, so, I didnt bother her either. “
Ram nodded as he joined in on their hearty conversation.
————————
“And then Bhaiya.. I hit a six on the last ball and we won!” Angad narrated his tale of victory excitedly as all of them looked on.
“Nice one champ!” Lakshman said, as he suddenly seemed to remember something.
“Angad, have you had breakfast?”
“Y..Yes Bhaiyya, why?” He seemed taken aback at Lakshman’s question.
“Then come,” Lakshman said tugging him away.
“Where are you taking him?” Urmila asked to which he only replied, “YOU’ll see!”
“He’s the younger between him and Angad, Im sure,” she giggled when she saw the two of them in the garden, Lakshman with a bat in his hand and Angad on the other side.
“Come on Angad!” He shook excitedly, as if he was back in those carefree days.
Angad threw the first ball right at his foot, as he jerked behind, and the makeshift stump-table fell down.
“Bhaiyya you are out!”
“Hey, it was a trial ball!”
“Oh dear,” Urmila rolled laughing.
“They’re so sweet,” Siya said placing her hand on her heart.
“True,” Ram added as he noticed a well known glint in her eyes.
“You know Ram, I may sound childish but.. if we have a son, I pray that you two share this kind of a bond.”
Rams heart beat faster at her words. Pure innocence lay in them, and his being strived to give her all that she wanted without a worry in the world. And he pledged to himself, to make sure he would never let any desire of hers go unheard, without hurting her in any way.
——————————
“Uh..Di, can I come in?”
Siya looked up from her desk as Urmila smiled at her from the door.
“Ofcourse Urmi, why are you being so formal?”
“Nothing Di,” she giggled. “Wheres Bhaiyya?” She asked sitting next to her.
“He’s on a call downstairs, should I call him?”
“No Di, I wanted to talk to you only. You remember what day it is this Friday right?”
“Ofcourse,” Siya smiled. “Our very Maanvi will turn 30 this time, we need to do something special.”
“Exactly Di! Shruti and I were thinking of the same thing… Do you have anything in mind?”
“Well… listen then.”
She smiled as the two sisters went over a series of plans and pranks and all that she liked and didnt. They shared a laugh when Ram entered and looked surprised.
“Hey, are you two planning something fishy?”
“Nothing fishy, but big for sure.” Urmila said. “Come here, we’ll tell you.”
Urmila blurted everything in front of Ram as he rubbed his hands in excitement.
“That sounds great! So except the last part, I can tell everything to Bharat, right?”
“Yes, anything but the last part. Im sure it will be a lot of fun!”
“Then what are we waiting for, lets get started!”
