CHAPTER 6

Prerna stood inside her living room surrounded by all her family and waiting for their reaction, her patience was running thin and it looked like no member of her family was ready to break the spell of silence that had surrounded them, not that she could blame them she had just disclosed to her family that she was in love, wanted to marry a man 10 years older than her who had a daughter, and she had dated him for 9 months it was a lot to take in and bound to leave them unsettled.

“Baba.......kuch toh kahiye”

“Meri bete itni badi kab ho gayi” he had finally said before smiling and placing his hand on her head “tere pasand kabhi galat nahi ho sakti, kal ghar pe bula le hum bhi toh mile apne hone wale damad se” he had said and as if on cue she had been bombarded with questions by everyone.

It was evening by the time she had been able to put mahesh’s curiosity to rest,pacified shivani and had a long heart to heart conversation with her father and it hadn’t escaped her notice that her mother had been silent through all this.

“Maa aap neaaj kuch nahi kaha” she asked hesitantly and walked towards her mother who was clearing up after dinner.

Her mother signed put the utensils down before looking at her and answering “priyu, mujhe tere pasand par koi shaq nahi hai, aur meh yeh bhi jaanti hu ki tujhe bache kitne pasand hai par pasand aur pyaar me farak hota hai, kya tu ek maa banne keliye such meh taiyaar hai? Ek bache ko palna aasan nahi hota aur jab vo aapka na ho toh…” she had finished caressing her daughters hair.

“Maa meh jaanti hu ki aapko lagta hai ki meh abhi khud bachi hu par aisa nahi hai, sneha jab usey dekhti hu na to aisa lagta hai jaise usme kuch hai joh mere dil ke tukde se bana ho, mujhe uske maa banne ki zararut nahi hai kyuki vo pehle se hi mere bete hai” she had said unable to keep the emotions and tears out of her voice.

Veena had been surprised by the intensity of her daughter’s emotions it seemed Prerna knew what she was talking about and the way she had talked about sneha the look in her eyes was the undoubtly the one mothers had and now even she couldn’ twait to meet the child her daughter had accepted as her own.

“Mere bet iitni badi kab ho gayi, abhi toh itni se thi aur ab” her mother said with tearsin her eyes unable to complete her sentence.

“Maa meh aapke liye abhi bhi itni se he hoon” she said wiping her mother’s tears and hugging her.

A few minutes later when she and her mother had finally done talking, wiped their tears and bid each other goodnight she had walked towards her room, only to find her sister pacing in the room with her eyes as wide as saucers and a list of questions ready at the tip of her tongue and prerna knew she wasn’t getting much sleep tonight.

And she wasn’t disappointed as soon as her sister had seen her she had dragged her to bed and began bombarding her with questions.

Two hours later it seemed like shivi was in no mood to rest and she wouldn’t let her sleep but she owed it to her sister for not telling her anything for so long.It was at three in the morning that they had finally fallen asleep.

“Please tell me you are kidding” Anurag said looking at prerna, horrified. “Prerna, you do realize what you are saying right, he is one of the richest industrialists in the world if you marry him your life is going to be on the front page of every bl**dy newspaper in the country and you hate attention, people say terrible things about him then there is the obvious age gap………does he even love you.”

She had expected this, Anurag was extremely practical and he was as protective of her as he was of his sisters, his questions were valid and these were the same doubts that had clouded her mind, she had lost so much sleep in the past thinking about these questions and now they hardly seemed to matter.

He had never said those three words to her, not even when he had proposed her the thought had constantly bugged her late in night, until it had finally dawned upon her that it did not matter he may never have said those words but he had certainly shown her how much she mattered, he had listened to her ramble for hours,cancelled a foreign trip because she was sick, spent countless resources to make sure her privacy was never compromised all the time they had dated without mentioning any of it once and most importantly he had been willing to share his life, his daughter with her it meant more to her than any amount of flowery words would.

“Have you considered that I have thought about all this, that I possibly know what I am doing and what I stand to lose” then she had softened her voice looking at the worry in her eyes “onu I know you are worried for me and I am doing something extremely unconventional but please trust me, I know him, he cares for me,respects me, trusts me, indulges me like no man ever could and these things are bigger than a age difference, right ” I looked at him, almost pleading.

“Are you sure about this prerna”

“More sure than I have been about anything in my life”

“Well then I am happy for you but this does not mean I am not angry at you, why didn’t you tell me, how long has this been going on?” he asked.

“Nine months” I replied smiling sheepishly.

“What!!!” he exclaimed “and I have no clue about it until today, come on that’s not fair,tell me everything from the beginning” he demanded.

And so she had told him everything, from their first date to the proposal, how happy she was, how she had met sneha, how had she fallen in love and while she was busy recounting him tales the afternoon had changed into evening.

“That went well” she said breaking the silence for the first time as she sat in his Kolkata office after his meeting with her family.

“You seem surprised, why is that prerna” he asked smirking “dis you actually think they were going to reject me”

“No, not reject…….. but really what did you say to my father that he seemed to be so in love with you” she asked, her tone giddy with excitement.

“That’s between us, now tell me do you like the ring or would you like to choose something else for the engagement”

“I am never going to like something more, this ring is it, now and forever” she said dreamily looking at the ring at her finger.

“A question,why was Mr Basu at your home, and assessing my every move”

“Because he is my best friend, and he is definitely going to give you a “if you hurt her talk” at some point” she said making air quotes “so please bear with it and don’t react…. He just wants the best for me”

“OK”

“How did you so abruptly came to the decision of marrying me” she asked bounding her arms on his neck.

“Because I missed you too much and realized how empty my life would be without you” he said before giving her small, chaste kiss on her lips and successfully silencing any other questions of her.

EPILOGUE

“This is your third visit to Kolkata in the past two months, If I didn’t know any better, I would assume you miss me too much” she said, wrapping my arms around him as I greeted him at the airport.

“Well, I wouldn’t have to miss you so much if you hadn’t insisted on staying in Kolkata till our wedding” he huffed.

“I am getting married, I wanted to spend time with my family and just three months and I am all yours” she said softly before hooking her arms to his and walking towards the exit.

As soon as they were inside the car he captured her lips with his “I missed you”

“I missed you too, now tell me where do you want to go first, home or your hotel and do not dare say office you look so tired.” She said practically biting out the last words.

“None of those places for now, I want to show you something” he said with the look that told her that he wasn’t going to tell her anything about where they were going.

Twenty minutes later the car stopped in front of a georgeous mansion in one of kolkata’s most posh neighbourhoods, the house was so beautiful that it left her tongue tied, the house was all white from outside and tastefully decorated with a large garden.

“Are we here to meet someone” she asked, curious.

“No” was the only answer he gave walked inside, confused she followed him.

“Why are where” she asked impatiently.

“How do you like the house” he asked, not answering her.

“It’s stunning, but what are we doing here, whose house is it”

“Your and mine, ours” he said, finally turning towards her.

“What!!” she exclaimed

“Well turns out Kolkata has immense business potential, and I don’t want you to miss your family because I know you did it a lot when you were in Mumbai.” He said in the most disinterested tone he could.

“You did this, all this for me”

“That’s the least I could do for the women I love” he said wiping her tears with his thumb and he noticed that she had suddenly gone stiff “what happened” he asked,concerned.

“That’s the first time you have said I love you” she said.

“So what…. O god woman please don’t tell me …….I don’t go proposing to women I don’t love”he said hugging her.

“I know… I love you too”.
