CHAPTER 8

He could hear her sobs and sniffles as he captured her in a bone crushing hug. She was holding onto him, reciprocating his hug, crying in his arms, tears uncontrollably wetting her cheeks. Aniruddh caressed her back, he couldn’t see his Bondita crying, not under any circumstances, and definitely not because of him. This girl was the beat of his heart, she was the most important and no way Aniruddh Roy Chowdhary was going to hurt her. Bondita being Bondita, was trying to make the most out of the hug considering this as the last ever physical contact they would ever have, trying to live in the moment, to absorb the solace she got, just from him and him only. She could at least live with these memories, that’s what she thought.

Aniruddh broke the hug, with Bondita moving back reluctantly, trying to move away while Aniruddh cupped her cheeks, causing Bondita to look down. His fingers traced the trail of tears that had formed on her cheeks due to constant crying before he wiped them away. Bondita was leaning to his touch, still looking away.

“Look at me, Bondita!” asked Aniruddh, holding her chin and Bondita’s head shot up instantly. Her eyes filled with love, fear and desperation – to be with him. Aniruddh felt a non suppressible urge, an urge which cannot be defied, to wipe away all the fears from her eyes, to protect her, to make her strong enough to protect enough, and above all, an irresistible desire, to kiss her.

Aniruddh brushed away those thoughts as he started talking; “Bondita I want you to listen to me. Saudamini and I, was in a relationship.” Bondita instantly stiffened hearing his confession and he could feel it under his touch. He pressed his lips in a tight line feeling her uncomfort. “But it was before, way before. It ended 9 years ago. We have nothing between us now.”

“9 years ago Aniruddh Babu! Doesn’t that mean I was the reason for your breakup?”Bondita asked.

Aniruddh answered; “Let me finish Bondita, please don’t interrupt me!?” Bondita nodded at his kind request. “Saudamini and I were childhood friends. We... kind of liked each other, but then I went to London for my education when I was 10, after that we met when I came back after my studies. We contacted over letters. Yes, we were in a relationship and I, I was about to talk about our alliance to Bhaumik Kaka, on the night of our wedding. But you know what happened.”

Both Bondita and Aniruddh sighed, the flashes of that night rushing into their memories.

“You came into my life. I had a lot of arguments, a lot of arguments about you with her. Still, I thought all of it was coming out of her love for me. Even when she did wrong things with you, I thought she was just frustrated over the fact that we couldn’t marry. But over time, I realized we were never meant to be. We were just not compatible. And that relationship broke with time and trust me, you have nothing to do with it.” Aniruddh finished his speech and gave a hopeful smile to Bondita. Should he confess his feelings? He thought to himself when Bondita raised a question.

“What about the conversation then, the night I came back? Saudamini Didi was saying I came in between your love story, that-that I destroyed everything!” asked Bondita cocking an eyebrow.

Aniruddh closed his eyes in frustration. This girl had completely misinterpreted the situation.

“Bondita, by now I am cent percentage sure that you just heard the tail of the conversation we had. She had made an agreement that 50% of my properties or whatever I own went to her, 10 years back. She confessed she loved me for my properties and all the perks I had, being a London returned Barrister. She also said, she hated me for my progressive thoughts. She herself said, she didn’t love me for what I am! She just defied being in love with me! And she was anyway spitting venom towards me so what will stop her from doing the same with you? You have nothing to do with it Bondita! Nothing!”

“I have nothing to do with it Aniruddh Babu? Really? If you never did that sacrifice, if you never married me, if I never came into your life, you would have married Saudamini Didi. You would be leading a happy life with her now! No matter what she thought or what she did. How can you say, I have no hand in breaking your relationship? I am capable of agreeing my mistakes, even if it happened unknowingly.” Bondita replied. Aniruddh was speechless, he had no idea what had got into her that she was behaving so weirdly. He didn’t expect this out of her. “You can still decide what you want Aniruddh Babu.” Bondita replied, her eyes didn’t hold anything now, it looked pale and tired.

“You let me choose what I want?”

“Yes!”

“Anything?”

“Yes! You have all the right to take any decision about our relationship.”

Aniruddh took a pause and then replied; “Okay, give me 2 days. I will be giving you the answer to this offer of yours.”

Bondita looked up at him. His eyes held a tinge of something which she couldn’t decipher. Aniruddh leaned towards Bondita, making her breathes stop, she closed her eyes tightly not being able to bear the proximity.

Aniruddh whispered in his husky voice; “Saudamini is getting married Bondita. Even if she wasn’t I would never, even in my dreams would have chosen her!” Bondita opened her eyes and glared at him in a questioning manner hearing his confession. Did that mean...! She didn’t get time to analyse it as he continued, moving back, standing up from the bed. “Your cheeks are red, Mrs. Aniruddh Roy Chowdhary!” he declared, before disappearing to the bathroom.

Bondita stood up from the bed, and checked out herself in the mirror. The colour of her saree and cheeks were quite matching – red. Her fingers involuntarily moved to her cheeks, when she was pinned against the wall in a sudden swift motion. She couldn’t even realise what just happened when she saw her handsome husband, just inches apart from her was staring at her with a smirk on his face. She turned mushy in his scrutiny.

“You said you would live with my memories, Bo-n-di-ta!” He said emphasizing her name, sound by sound. Her gaze moved towards his lips unknowingly. It was broken when he snapped infront of her eyes, continuing; “Here, Bondita! Look into my eyes.” She looked back in his eyes, she felt his gaze was piercing into her heart and soul, trying to read her thoughts, which were really not decent at that point of time.

“You said you would live with my memories, that’s all you want! However, Mrs. Bondita Aniruddh Roy Chowdhary, I don’t think you meant what you said. I think my memories, I mean, the moments you spent with me would make you restless instead! So just try to resist me these 2 days, and see if...” he leaned and rested his chin on her nape, whispering into her ears; “if you can resist your husband.”

Bondita’s breath hitched at that intimate contact.
