Folks:
I truly believe the coronavirus has been in India for several weeks now.
.
1. The first case of coronavirus in Wuhan was supposedly on December 10. Any lockdown measures started only by January 20. 1 month is a lot of time for a virus like this to spread all over the world. The Chinese officials acted only when large no. of serious cases with pneumonia started filling up hospitals. Considering <10% develop such problems, we never know the no. or the timeline of the mild cases before that.
.
2. A lot of people known to me were down with a mysterious flu in late January/early February. Symptoms include dry persistent cough, yellow phlegm production, fever, chills.. all symptoms of corona. In fact an 80 year old relative of me was admitted to ICU and needed ventilator support with suspected pneumonia. The symptoms were same. Thankfully he is alright now.
.
3. It may look like I am pulling stuff out of thin air, but there are a lot of reasons to believe this. In India, you will always see one person or the other sneezing or coughing with no manners, especially in public transport. We also only know fever. Our healthcare system works in such a way. You could go to a clinic for fever and you will easily get a prescription of paracetamol, anitbiotics etc.. We don't have a habit of staying at home and not taking any medicine like westerners do. And since this thing goes away for most of the cases, people won't even bother other than thinking it's just a normal flu.
.
4. We are also a young country. As per 2011 census, the median age is 26. And I am guessing the population of 80+ year old is not that high. And honestly with a barely functioning healthcare system, many of the elderly people with serious condition end up dead more often that not. Compared to say Italy which has the 2nd highest elderly population in the world and 50% of both men and women are smokers.
.
5. If my hypothesis is true, we still don't know how many are already affected. If that number is high, herd immunity may become a better option than a lockdown.
.
In my opinion, We need to reassess the economic cost of the lockdown. We will not be able to sustain a prolonged lockdown. So many people are living their lives day by day. At some point the lockdown will seriously affect them and we will end up in a bad situation. We cannot go for a lockdown until a vaccine or cure is found. That'll be too long. At some point, we will have to make some tough choices.
May Force be wid us, Folks.

Thats true but at least its better step than before.
I'm a key worker so it doesn't make a difference to me, I still have to go to work but I just can't stress enough for those who can stay at home for work, they just need to get a grip and bloody work from home. I would do anything to be able to work from home now but can't.
My heart is crying, with Berry size tears,.. when I am writing this from a foreign land,.... as being an Indian,... Some may say, Chinese f**ed up,..
but, try to understand in real detail,....
the points to be understood is,..
The exponential growth phase has started, even with highly restricted testing. I fear we may lead the world in total cases and deaths in about a month. The woefully inadequate number of ventilators in this country (about 30,000?) is worrisome.
All the privileged A-holes who skipped quarantine and pushed us under the bus deserve a special mention. The time for a nationwide complete lock down is NOW ! It is already too late. Our family went into total lockdown since last weekend. But unless the government enforces this is not going to work. And I don't understand why the government is delaying the inevitable. Crowded buses and trains are not stopped even now, and this defies all logic.
Modi realized it is time to speak to the nation after several weeks of outbreak, then gives 48 hours advance notice for his recorded speech to the nation, then another 48 hours plus for a 'janta curfew'.
Truly unbelievable. The ruling govt doesn't think it is yet emergency situation. Millions likely are infected in India. Stronger immunity, age and heat is keeping the deaths super low.
No. The death numbers are low because as youmentioned millions are likely infected and not 130+ Cr, if all of them have been tested. If people are dying we may never come to know the true data for all of them because the test kits are not many. Until March 19 only 12000 were tested compared to 120,000 in the US yesterday.
I think smoking is one thing which resulted in a lot of deaths in Italy. As corona attacks the lungs etc males (who smoked more) were disproportionately impacted.
However there is also an another side here,....What I see is, an economic lock down will be deadly in it's own right and social distancing is something we're never going to do. An economic lock down puts the future of kids, young adults, middle aged people in danger. I hope we know what we're doing. Even in this situation there are some MFs -MC-BC, ( sorry for bad words ) shahin baghs all over the country. These people refuse to move out even now. The death toll in Italy is mind boggling. I am sure many Indians may already have gotten it and still we may not have accurate numbers. Most of people don't care about hygiene.
As per DGCA, 87000 people daily travel to India from outside. People who are telling Govt didn't check all, is it possible to keep 87000 people daily for 14days ?
Till now India has been extremely lucky ( really? just BCoz no testing done? ) to have a very limited impact due to Covid-19. The next 2 weeks are very crucial and will reveal what trajectory different parts/states will take and how over/underwhelmed different regions health systems get impacted. Yesterday I was watching CNN and there was a discussion between a Harvard doctor, Ashish Jha and CNN host Cuomo. Jha mentioned that when the summer comes the number of cases may decrease but it may come back in fall. I do not know if this is proven or not.
That is 12.18 lk people. Even if we keep, there is another problem, if one of them had covid then others near him will get it. If we allow them to roam out also there is chance of spreading but that is chance, but if we keep them inside then there is sure chance of spreading.
From China to other countries unless people got really ill, they are aren't admitted and unless there is profound symptoms they aren't checked for COVID.This is what India also doing.
Instead of criticizing the govt, you can stay at home without any order from govt. This is the best we all can do.
If possible and educated in that field on this forum,.., please help others.
Just don't criticize and compare with other countries.
If India takes action like China then will the opposition parties will support? Can Indians stay for months without going out? There are crores of people who live on daily income. We cant do like china or s.korea. There are many TV medias still blaming govt and exaggerating things...
Help the nation. Criticize who are making the disease to spread. If needed arrest them and punish them instantly. But sorry we can democracy...
This should be bottom up approach from individuals to families to communities to towns to regions to states to the country. After all, no govt. is asking you to go out and interact with other people. My observation is that Indian media is disappointed with the low numbers reported and trying to create a narrative with all terminologies used in the really affected countries to create a false equivalence with developed countries who can afford to shutdown for months, with generous inputs from all kind of experts.
No other country in the world has as much experts as India has, who can give expert opinion about everything under the sun. I see many members supporting here for Full lock down on above post and many
ha-ha hee-hee kind of my own, social media ( web circulated ) flood posts, but now it sure needs a thoughtful discussion as I promised.
I also heard many people saying, The only reason for COVID-19 in India is due to tourist coming into India. But,... Hello,.... We know that the majority of them came on flights. India could have iron-fistedly clamped down on flights and entry of people into the Country. For example Italian tourists visiting India spread the virus in Kerala and Jaipur. It is a much easier job screening these tourists landing in INDIA.I don't see the rationale for tourists with symptoms still traveling on planes. These people are placing entire nation as hostage as far as the economy goes. Many Asia tourists have had symptoms but they travel on planes infecting others. The world needs to regulate their travel by insisting on Medical Certificate PRIOR TO BOARDING the flight otherwise the whole effort is a mockery of all other efforts. The medical certificate should be given by certified doctors/hospitals. Rudimentary IR sensors prior to boarding should screen out people with mild fever symptoms. Essentially only healthy people can travel on flights, which is good for everyone including the crew.
I have much more to say,.... and still typing with my poor typing skills,..
May Energy be all-ways with us, and I hope and pray that India be da 1st nation to find its first vaccine and be da Vishwaguru !
.
Let time 2 tell da story n' God overhead. My fingers R crossed,.....

stay safe
thankfully all my family members are working from home...feel bad for those who cant
AS of March 22.
South Korea could control well...
Italy failed,......

GoI should seriously consider a two week lockdown - I believe that some experts are suggesting it. In addition, they are asking the GoI to start emergency manufacturing of ventilators and other medical equipment that would be needed.
In addition, it's time to take Swachh Bharat to the next level.
1) No more public spitting
2) No open urinating
3) No open defecation
4) Cover all open sewers
5) No more public littering
6) Ensure clean air and water
7) Enforce good hygiene practices everywhere (especially people who handle food)
8) No more vehicular honking
This won't happen overnight but these things ought to keep the bureaucrats in Delhi busy for the foreseeable future.

Folks,.. IMHO,...
Its time to lockdown now. Economy can wait but lives cannot. I fear virus has already spread silently. We'll start seeing the results in another 1 week.
What say? Like I said earlier,...
The time for a nationwide complete lock down is NOW!
Some foolish thinks,...Around 2-5% die rest all recover. When there is no known treatment in allopathy and still these people recovering means its because of their immune system.
Not just in India but all over the world this is the situation. If the theory that immune system won't work on Novel virus then how come those people recovered?
But, hello my friend,...
Millions likely are infected in India. Stronger immunity, age and heat is keeping the deaths super low. - just don't remain in that false impression.
This point has never made much sense to me. This is a common point most western outlets believe to be the case for low infection rare so far, however it defies logic, how exactly do you develop strong immunity to a novel disease? Your immune system is essentially functions on memory and past experiences, you can be immune to say diseases you have already suffered and recovered from, not from something that is new to your system. Moreover if our supposedly legendary immune system is the reason for low infection rate, why were we so devastated with Polio & HIV in the 90's? I mean its not as of our surroundings are any less filthier today as they were in 90's.
How hard is it for people to accept that Indian state capacity is far better than most people think and that Indians (Rich or poor) in general practice a somewhat healthy lifestyle owing to their religion (washing hands after eating food compulsorily, bathing everyday, cremating the dead etc.)
In fact if Indians switched back to traditional diet than the modern Indian diet , then your average person could easily live up to 80's.
According to south Korean model. ....
i believe that's what the govt. has been doing so far apart from the widespread testing.
Each country has a certain number of people infected with COVID-19. If you isolate them (somehow) then the rest of the nation does not need to be held hostage. A govt's job is to swiftly remove infected people to some isolation zone (say in Hot desert Rajasthan where the virus can decay quickly). There they can be administered whatever combination of drugs that work to alleviate the condition. Those who have symptoms should voluntarily check into Govt test zones promptly. People have the ability to know if something is wrong with themselves, animals know intuitively. The community can be employed to enforce this since near/dear ones know the inside story and can report to the authorities if there is non-compliance. Once these clear objectives and guidelines are met, the rest of the world can go about its business and we don't need shutdowns and other drastic conditions. Of course borders should be closed to prevent further contamination. For this to happen it is simple to enforce another common sense directive. Don't board anyone without a certified medical test done 24hr previously. The traveler has to get one, otherwise they are not boarded onto flights. Before entry into the country they are again tested and placed into quarantine if any symptoms occur. Roads of course are closed at the borders.
That may work in a homogeneous, close-knit community, but not in India; as evidenced by the number of people skipping quarantine and traveling in trains and buses.
The good news is that they've ramped up testing since yesterday, yet the number of cases haven't gone up alarmingly. Let's hope it stays that way.
And here I am thinking Indian can afford "less Indians" but lets not cripple the already crippled economy.
You know what? That's interesting. In Los Angeles, the local county has decided to only test in some cases (severe symptoms, elderly, healthcare workers, etc.) and not do testing in otherwise healthy young people with mild symptoms. This may be seen as an admission that the virus can't be contained.
If it seems that the virus can't be contained in India, perhaps India should concentrate efforts on lessening severity of disease impact upon the population by setting up makeshift hospitals with ICU beds, manufacturing ventilators and protective equipment, giving additional medical training to medical staff, etc.
I am not saying that lockdown and social isolation are bad ideas, they should still happen as they are still important to slow the spread(even if complete containment may not be possible), but resources should also be spent on developing makeshift hospital facilities and manufacturing supplies needed to deal with the surge of serious cases we all know are coming.
All government have some money saved up for rainy days, perhaps they need to go into crisis management mode and come up with some solutions fast.
This break the chain idea ( Modi's recent effort ) I am not sure whether it works 100%. In China with all claimed great measures, 46 more cases yesterday. In S.Korea yesterday +98 new cases. What happened to their 'break the chains'? They tested more people than other countries. So now we can be more confident that the chain didn't break. BTW S.Korea has checked only 3lk population out of 5.15crs. This I don't know whether it includes passengers screened at the airports.
For India on Mar 16, Bhargava is “not worried about capacity” and there’s no discussion about roping in private units. India can currently conduct up to 10,000 tests a day. The ICMR laboratories have about 100,000 testing kits and an additional 200,000 have been ordered, said RR Gangakhedkar, ICMR chief epidemiologist.
Now March 22 so might be they are already checking that many or more in case those kits had arrived.
Tell ya,.. God save this nation,....... it's time 2 say our Prayers,.... Few "addiyal Tattus" just don't understand yet the gravity n' magnitude of the situation that been going world-wide !
Extend yr thoughts 2, Thx folks...
Just to be clear - the virus can stay viable outside for 3 hours, stay viable on surfaces for up to 3 days, and an infected person can infect another person for 14 days even without symptoms.......and this Indian govt thinks they an "break the chain" by asking people to stay at home for 14 hours and having them all clap at a given point of time?? I still shake my head in denial,.... folks,.. If puzzle was so easy, world would had solved it a lot earlier !! No ?
It is war like situation. Economy is screwed anyway with or without lockdown. Better the world go standstill for next 3 weeks and this is treated as global war against coronavirus. What the heck is one day lockdown in India? The brain behind this should be preserved in a museum.
These are some stats from valid news sources -As of Friday South Korea completed 3,00,000 testing of COVID,USA tested around 1,80,000,India tested 14,000 for COVID cases as of yesterday..The more the testing, the less the community spread.South Korea achieved some best results and avoided high mortality % due to the early testing..
For India ,1360 million people and 14,000 testing, goes down as one of the lowest ratio in the world..With not even a partial lock-down in India ,there might be a invisible outbreak behind the curtain. With limited medical supplies ,there is no need to blame the government ,but enforce yourself to isolation. That would be the best medical care for the dense country like ours...
With rising positive cases and the non adherence of home isolation by the elite few NRI returns.. the need of the hour is complete lock down
Stop the domestic flights and god sake stop the trains first
Apart from essential services everything else should be closed down at least till April 4
Life is more precious than Economy !
Tell ya,...
India should have done only one thing..may be from March1st. Ban all incoming flights from other Countries. Source of trouble.
No shut down or any other lock down affecting the overall economy, needs to be considered. Let people and Industries continue with their normal work.
Sadly, we missed the bus.
Since G8 countries are affected, corona has acquired a cult status.
Hardly 1% of Indians will have running tap water, and experts moot solutions like washing hands with soaps, using sanitizers etc
We are over doing, and scare mongering, wouldn't take us anywhere.
India has too much reserves ...130 crores
The walls of pride are high and wide ; Can’t see over to the other side.
