Part 31

“What?You want this baby Neil?” asked Mini tensed over their different preferences.“Yes, but its not important. You said you don’t want this baby. Your choice matters to me the most.” replied Neil. “But Neil…..” Mini tried to ask him the reason. “Mini, calm down. No need to get all worked up. And yes I gave it a lot of thought and then came to the conclusion that so what that the baby is unplanned. We didn’t do anything with planning in our life. Our love confession, our marriage everything was unplanned and it turned out really well so I was thinking same for this baby.”Neil explained the reason behind his choice. “But Neil….everything is so….it happened too soon. There is so much to do…your career, my photography,restaurant expansion, Arya….I am not yet ready for this.” said Mini as she tried to explain. “Shhh, no need to explain anything love. This is our baby but as a mother you have the sole and primary right to take any decision regarding your pregnancy. The baby will grow inside you. You will be investing your physical and mental energy for this. So if you are not happy with it then we should not have this baby.” Neil said as he hugged her. “But what about your happiness?” asked Mini feeling guilty. “My happiness lies with your happiness.Whatever you decide is fine by me” said Neil and asked her to not feel guilty over anything.

They decided they will go to the doctor tomorrow for abortion. Neil was keeping the pregnancy report in the drawer. “Why are you keeping it there?” asked Mini.“Mini, as we have decided to go for abortion I think we should not tell anyone about your pregnancy. You know elderly people right? Once they will get to know they will not support us and I doubt they will do their emotional blackmail on you to have this baby and I don’t want anybody to pressurize you for anything.”Explained Neil. Mini just nodded in yes and tried to get some sleep. While Neil sat beside her on bed lost in his own thoughts. He had said to Mini that he is fine by Mini’s decision but he was sad somewhere. True he didn’t want baby this early but when he got to know he is going to be a father he couldn’t stop himself from imagining a little baby in Mini’s arms calling him papa and extending his arms towards him. Neil saw Mini was sleeping. He put his hand on her stomach and caressed it. “Get a grip on your emotions Neil” he chided himself. “Mini is right she is not ready for this baby and her happiness is of foremost importance.” He thought. He again caressed her stomach and whispered,“Sorry baby, your mumma is not yet ready to bring you to this world. You have to wait for some more time.”

Next day Mini and Neil went to the doctor for abortion. Doctor explained them all the risk involved and gave them necessary counseling. She advised them that Mini is already 8 weeks pregnant and if they still decide to abort the baby they need to be quick and made them sign a consent form. She did necessary checkups. Mini was getting very nervous. She was continuously fidgeting with her clothes and her hands were getting cold. Neil saw this and held her hand,“Don’t worry love. Everything will be fine.” Neil assured her. Doctor came after some time asked Mini to come with her for the procedure. Mini got up she felt her legs were shaking. She went with the doctor somehow. Mini lay down on the operative table. Doctor checked her blood pressure. She gasped seeing a very low blood pressure. She gave some medicine to Mini and asked her to calm down. “Doctor, How it will be done….what is the process?” asked Mini nervously.“Don’t worry dear you wont feel pain. I will give you some medicines then we will insert a small tool inside you and before you will know the procedure will be over.” Doctor tried to explain in layman’s language. Try as she may but Mini couldn’t relax herself. She was continuously having a feeling that something is not right. After half an hour also when her blood pressure didn’t improve doctor cancelled the operation. She prescribed her some medicines and asked her to come next day.

Mini and Neil came back to their home. As they entered everyone shouted,“Congratulations” They were shocked to hear this. “Aise kya dekh rahe ho? Tum dono ko kya laga ki tum bataoge nahi toh hume pata nahi chalega?” asked Biji as she lovingly put her hand on Mini’s head. “Biji, what are you saying?” asked Mini confused. “Allah maari ab jyada na ban, hume pata hai you are pregnant.”Said Naeem bi smiling excitedly. “Veer Balika, tum mere liye ek chhota baby laogi” asked Arya excitedly. “How you all know?” asked Neil shocked. “I didn’t remember where I kept my glasses so I was searching the whole house then I remember yesterday I was in your room when I asked Sweety to clean it so I thought may be I forgot it there. There in you drawer I found the reports.”Explained Biji. “Tum logo ne ye khabar dekar dil khush kar diya. Isi khushi mein celebration hona chahiye.” Said Dadu. Mini and Neil looked at each other.How they are going to handle this now. Neil asked Sweety to take Arya into her room. Then he started to say something when Mini stopped him. “Mini, don’t stop me. We should tell them about our decision before they get their hopes high.”Said Neil.

“Biji, dadu, Naeem bi please listen to me and don’t judge us for anything.” Begin Neil. “What are you trying to say?” asked Biji confused. “We have decided that we are not going to have this baby. We have opted for abortion. In fact we are coming from the hospital only. Doctor said today Mini is not fine so she has called us tomorrow.” Neil said the truth. “Are you out of your mind?” asked Naeem bi. “ek ajanme bachhe ko maarna chahte ho tum log. Aisa karne ka socha bhi kaise?” Biji accused them. “Neil ko samajh nahi aa raha main manta hoon par Mini tum ek ma hoke apne bachhe ko marna chahti hai. Jaanti hai paap hai ye.”Asked dadu. Mini started crying listening to dadu as his words hit her like a sharp knife. Neil immediately came by her side and made her sit on the sofa. Mini looked at him questioningly as if asking him is she really that bad person as dadu made her feel. Neil held her hands and wiped her tears. He pressed her hands in assurance whatever Dadu said is not true. Neil stood up, “That’s why we didn’t tell you. Aap logo ki ye purani soch….abortion is paap and all that.Mini is the mother if she is not happy with her pregnancy then she has full right to terminate it. I can understand aap logo ki generation ke liye mushkil hoga ye sab samajhna but aajkal ki aurton ki life sirf ek bachhe paida karne ka kaam nahi hai wo life mein bahut kuch karna chahti hain…jaise Mini.Mini ko lagta hai abhi use apne career par dhayn dena chahiye to isme galat kya hai?” Neil tried to explain them. “Wo sab hume nahi pata. Hum bas itna jante hain ki bachhe bhagwan ki den hai. Unhe thukrana nahi chahiye.” Said biji. “bilkul theek, career aur dusri cheese toh chalti rehti hain life mein bachhe ke aa jane se kya fark padega isme?” Naeem bi seconded. “See I don’t think we can make you understand our situation ever. So let it be. But hoga wahi jo Mini chahegi. If she wants abortion then its final. You are our elders. I respect you a lot but I am warning all of you. I wont allow anyone here to pressurize my wife for anything. That’s it.” Neil said with finality and took Mini to their room.

“They are right Neil, I am such a bad person I am killing my own baby” Mini wailed in Neil’s arms. “No love, its not your fault. And its not a sin to set priorities in life. Please don’t mind what they just said. Their generation wont understand us. You are not doing anything wrong.” Said Neil as he consoled her.“But what about you? You also want this baby and I am being selfish here only thinking about myself.” Asked Mini again with tearful eyes looking directly in his eyes as if searching for truth. Neil couldn’t avoid her questioning gaze and sighed as he decided to open up to her about his feelings. “Mini, its true I would have been very happy if you had decided to have this baby. Its not like I feel there is something missing in my life as Arya is there to fill the place of child in our life but still….she calls me Genie or Neil. She will always be our first child but I would be on cloud nine if a little one is there to call me papa. But I am not ready to compromise with you happiness at any cost. See I am the father I will be with you but you being the mother have greater responsibility. You will be drained emotionally and physically and the impact it will have on your personal and professional life is something I cant even comprehend. So you have to be confident to have this child and if your are not then its ok, I understand.” Replied Neil honestly. Mini nodded and hugged him.

Mini and Neil again went to the hospital next day. Doctor again checked Mini. This time she found everything fine. She shifted her to operation room. She was getting her staff and tools ready but Mini was a nervous wreck. She constantly had this uneasiness. This weird feeling that something wrong is about to happen. Neil’s words, “Our love confession, our marriage everything was unplanned and it turned out really well so I was thinking same for this baby”, “I would be on cloud nine if a little one is there to call me papa” kept ringing in her ears. She closed her eyes tightly to shut the voices in her head. When she opened her eyes doctor was performing sonography and monitoring the baby’s progress before starting the procedure. Mini looked at the screen. She saw a tiny shape about 1-2 inch size moving. “Doctor, is that…..is that….my baby?Asked Mini as her voice choked with emotions. “Yes. It’s the baby.” Docto rreplied then looked at Mini and saw her getting all emotional. She understood her condition and asked her, “Do you want to know more about the baby” Mini nodded in yes. Doctor began explaining her about the baby by showing her the screen. Suddenly Mini’s vision became blurred. She couldn’t understand but then noticed that she was crying. She once again looked at the tiny shape…..She felt overwhelmed by emotions. Something so tiny cannot cause any harm to her life’s plan. She felt sudden surge of maternal feelings inside her. She wanted to protect that little thing from all the harms of world. Dadu’s words, “Mini tu ek ma hoke apne bachhe ko marna chahti hai” rang in her ears again and she her eyes became wide in horror as she thought that she opted to kill this innocent little thing. She again looked at the screen and realized that she has fallen in love with this baby. She cant let any harm come his way let alone kill him.

A nurse brought Mini outside the operation room on wheel chair. Neil saw it and rushed towards them. “Mini, Is it done? How are you?” asked Neil. Mini held his hand and kept crying. Neil became more worried, “What happen Mini? Are you hurt? Are you in pain?” Neil asked again. Mini was still crying she couldn’t form the proper sentence so to answer him she took his hand and kept it on her stomach. Neil looked at her confused. Finally Mini said in choking voice, “I couldn’t kill our baby. How could I? its our baby….our symbol of love. Its still here…safe and sound. We will welcome him in this world.” Said Mini as she smiled in between her tears. Neil hugged her as he also couldn’t stop his tears. “thank you….thank you so much love.” He whispered. Doctor smiled seeing them as she understood their emotions. She advised them about all the necessary things that need to be taken care of and prescribed medicines to Mini. Neil took her back to Haveli. All the elderly people were waiting with sad faces but when they got to know that Mini changed her decision they all sighed in relief. Biji and Dadu became so happy that they decided to throw a party for close friends and relatives. Arya was on cloud nine and excited for the new baby. She wasn’t leaving Mini’s side and was caressing her stomach every now n then. Neil was happy looking both of them. They were the two most important people of his life. His princesses and now there will be one more addition to it. He was the happiest man on earth.
