Actually once when she wrote the first two chapters she mentioned to him that someone she thought to be her prince charming turned out to be a monster who spoiled her life... that's when he asked her to give love another chance..

So I believe he knows this fact that it was someone she loved who destroyed her life.. and somehow the same happened with him too.. never did he also speak about MJ and his love of the past and so never asked her the details of the same.. although he knows the gist of her past..now he needs to fill the flesh and blood to the skeleton that he has..
