Role of Drs in NASA is of extreme importance. It isnt a peripheral or tertiary role.

1. Astronauts require food, the boraml regular food doenst work up there. Dr. And nutritionists research on that

2. Excretion and peeing, another task which has huge effirt because of gravity and because of cumbersome suit, hence drs work along with 'scientists' to make sure that they do their business safely

3. They need medical assitance up there in the space and drs are required. Every space mission has a medical person involved in it.

A dr in space mission is as much important as them beong on a battlefield.

Btw, nasa doesn't only have space research. They research on a variety of things including medical sciences

You can call anyone with a doctorate, i.e a PhD a doctor. They necessarily do not have to be involved with medical science.
