I think those are his AA chips... When someone has overcome addiction, these chips signify how long he's been sober.

All that stress and tension usually pushes addicts to drink/take drugs again so Nannu was trying to calm himself down and not give in to the addiction.

I'm glad to know he's not all goody good..he has faults too..I felt for him there....
