“I always try to do roles that are different than me. I am always excited to bring out different shades of me. Also, coming to history, it's not exactly true that Dara was soft hearted. He is a very layered character, which makes it challenging.” - Ranveer Singh

One of the English traveller on dara
‘The first born son of King Shahjahan,’ agrees Manucci, is ‘a man of dignified manners, of a comely countenance, joyous and polite in conversation, ready and gracious of speech, of most extraordinary liberality, kindly and compassionate, but over-confident in his opinion of himself, considering himself competent in all things and having no need of advisers.’
Jahanara on dara
Dara Shikoh is just a year younger than Jahanara and the two siblings share an exceptionally close bond. ‘He and I are one soul manifested in two forms’, writes Jahanara, ‘and we are one life in two bodies.’
Aurangazeb
there is a younger son whom everyone seems to be oblivious of, who is growing up under the claustrophobic shadow of Shah Jahan and Dara Shikoh. This mirza is ‘very different from the others, being in character very secretive and serious, carrying on his affairs in a hidden way, but most energetically’. When he is barely fifteen years old this prince, Aurangzeb, momentarily bursts onto the imperial scene. During an elephant fight organized in front of the entire durbar and all the royal princes, Aurangzeb is flung from his horse by an incensed elephant. While the other princes, including Dara Shikoh, maintain a prudent distance, Aurangzeb, helped by Shah Shuja and demonstrating remarkable bravery and sangfroid, confronts the animal on foot with his sword and subdues it. When admonished by Shah Jahan for putting his life at risk, the young mirza sneers at his older brothers claiming, not incorrectly, that ‘the shame lay in what my brothers did’.
Jahanara
Jahanara Begum, eldest daughter and favourite child of Padshah Shah Jahan is forty years old, unmarried, and at the very height of her glory and power. Known simply as Begum Sahib, she is Padshah Begum of the Mughal empire. The brand-new city of Shahjahanabad, completed by the padshah in 1648, has been shaped in the furnace of Jahanara’s ambition. Five of the nineteen imperial buildings in the city have been built by her
The entire revenue of the territory and port of Surat, all fourteen lakhs rupees of it, is hers to command. The revenue from the estate at Panipat, estimated at over two lakhs of rupees, has also recently been bestowed upon Jahanara. Her ship, the Sahibi, sails from the port of Surat under her colours and Jahanara carries out lucrative trade with the Dutch and the English. Her total annual income, including the imperial allowance, is estimated at thirty lakhs rupees (1.5 billion rupees in today’s money). In addition, the noblemen at court and the foreign merchants seeking trade favours wrangle to give her the most flawless jewels, the most surprising curiosities. Jahanara is erudite and cultured and has also written two Sufi treatises in Persian, displaying her confidence in the mastery of the Chisthiya faith. ’She was loved by all,’ agrees Manucci, ‘and lived in state and magnificence.’ Her resplendence is unparalleled and she has accomplished more than any single Mughal woman till now.
‘Since I was twenty years old,’ Jahanara says, ‘I have been attached in the corner of my faith to the Chishtiyah sect and the circle of the Sheikh tugs at my soul.’
