and what is so called Indianness??

The jhooti shaan aur maan, people go to somewhere other than their birthplace and still cling on the castes and religious bias, especially when they settle with family.

It is common everywhere, many here in Shillong do the same. They wanna have fun with the tribal girls, but marraige aeere woh sirf apni caste ki ladki se karna hai, warna mummy ko bura lagega.

Sunny shouldn't have said "Indians in America" though, because that makes it like she is even bringing broad minded Indians who live in foreign under the same umbrellas as the ones she is talking about.

I can understand what she is trying to say.

The first generation Indians I know who have moved there have grown up in a different India. They still hold on to that mindset. I have heard first hand accounts of the culture shock they had while moving to US some 3 decades back. The real confused ones r their kids. Parents taught them old Indian values and told that all the open exhibitionism of affection, intimacy..even the attire they see in US is taboo in our homeland.

Now when these kids visited India they saw a Completely different scene starting from clothes to culture. They saw couples holding on at the beaches, parks, lakes..got to know about their cousins dating at teenage..infact they saw a new India maintaining a balance between their traditional values and modern world..and it comes easy to youngsters

Desis in general tend to really try hard to hold on to culture, religious beliefs especially after moving abroad and often don't try to understand when their kids disagree with it.

it's not just boy's fault, their family also never gracefully accepts a relationship with intercaste or outside the community. Hardly. And how it concerns NRI, because that is same about many Indians abroad.

And woh last paragraph doesn't make sense, since I am not questioning for moving to foreign lands. I am just criticising the fakeness and hypocrisy most of us Indians have trying to preserve things which even Indians here in India don't give a damn about, when we move out from the native land, whether to foreign land or even the other region of the nation.

Caste system is an evil of the society....and most Indians here don't care about it....I don't understand why NRIs are being judged on it.

Why should anyone follow anyone?! ... in this case Indians in Indian? .... If Indians in India don't want to preserve the culture or ideologies why does have to be accepted by NRIs? ... And what is so wrong in preserving culture and ideologies which connects NRIs to India?! .... Ofc it depends which aspect of the culture ..... But if one generalizes ofc it wouldn't sit well with most!

I get the generalisation part is the one which is irking the NRIs. But there are many things which people still cling on to in the name of religion.

It is not about preserving the culture, it is about supporting the negative and outdated Indian traditions and customs in the name of culture, and than looking down on others because they don't follow the same value. Simple.

See Sunny's comment generalised and it irked people and I get it, she shouldn't have said Indians in America as a whole because it irks every one, similar thing happened when Aamir Khan talked about intolerance, and it irked people. When SRK was stupidly dragged into this, same thing happened.

that is why many Indians settled abroad marry their kids to India for dowry and to find same caste girl/boy.

see you are NRI and it's normal for you to get angry on Sunny's generalized comment, which makes every Indian in America a backward thinking buffon. But you can't deny many Indian origins people, do stuffs which many of us don't even do here.

Yes those said traditions are misused even here in name of preserving culture, and we Indians here aren't exactly cent percent forward thinking either.

For me It's not about preserving culture.. basically what our culture comprises of is respecting people, talking politely, our festivals, celebrations, our respective religions, Gods. Indians abroad r doing that fantastically.

What creates issues is when foreign culture is projected as wrong. That's what really confuses children and youngsters. There's a saying..When in Rome do as Romans do. It saves u a lot of hassles. It's like telling Ur kid to sit still in a park when everyone around them is playing.

Like we went to a foreign land..living in India my kids had never seen women wearing bikinis even on beaches or pools..they had seen other swimwear. Initially they felt a bit awkward. But since that attire was normal for those women even children got used to it. When they interacted they realised the warmth in their nature, the kindness, helpfulness and humour. So this exposure kind of normalised things for them. They understood that people everywhere r same irrespective of their appearances
