Chapter 15:

Amir showed up the next morning at her gate again, this time with a different order from Rishab. Amir was to join her on the bus if she refused the car. Prerna refused the car.

It was good to have Amir on the bus, honestly. Prerna appreciated him keeping her away from the sleezy men. There were two on her daily route who tried to tease her and honestly, it scared her. It was good to have Amir there - not that she would admit it.

Prerna got off at the school.

Amir: I will be in the area, maam. Please call me when you are ready to leave.

He left.

Prerna was now in her second day of classes. Yesterday was a bit nerve wracking...especially in the older kids' classes. The kids thought the substitute teacher was someone to tease and joke about constantly. She had a hard time maintaining discipline in the class, but Kukki's class was amazing. Kukki took such pride in her being the teacher, she went around and introduced Prerna to all her friends and Prerna could tell it improved Kukki's popularity significantly. That made it all worth it.

Prerna came back today with a renewed strictness. The principle had told her that it was a bit of a learning curve and she was inclined to give this a real try. After all, she to take life into her own hands now, soon she was going to be responsible for a baby. She had to be disciplined and get this right. Prerna wore a conservative black sari today to add to her strict image.

Prerna walked into the teachers' office to get her schedule for the day. Rishab was there, giving some directives to the principal.

Principle: Yes, sir, thank you for alerting me about that. I will look out. That kind of behavior will not be tolerated.

Rishab nodded and turned to see Prerna. His heart fluttered and sank at the same time. She was not his anymore. He looked her up and down as she ignored him and went to pick up her syllabus from the shared board. So this was her idea of not looking like a delectable beauty? A black sari with her lush raven hair and just butter-soft skin? It made him smile to himself. She really had no idea how beautiful she was. Her idea of going simple and conservative really did nothing to dampen her looks - they accentuated it.

Rishab walked up to her. She cut his path and walked out of the room after bidding good morning to the principal.

She snapped around when they were alone outside: Don't you have companies to run, why are you here again?

Rishab: I came for Kukki's new syllabus.

Prerna looked a little embarrassed.

Rishab: And to tell principal to look out for you. Those boys will be dealt with if they tease you again.

Prerna's head snapped up: That is exactly what I thought! Aaa geye na aap, taang arane!? What did I tell you about leaving me alone?

Rishab bit his bottom lip unconsciously: Don't worry. I am leaving now.

He walked out as the bell rang. Prerna watched him from behind. He was so fit, wasn't he? He had a nice...oh god, what am I thinking!?

Prerna rushed into her next class.

Rishab was there at the end of the day to pick Kukki up for the weekend break. He was running a bit late, but he got there as fast as he could. Most of the children were gone.

He found Kukki sitting on Prerna's lap in the sandbox. They were concentrating very hard on the sand structure they were building.

Kukki pointed structure and said proudly to Prerna: Pa!

Prerna nodded: Papa.Say it beta? Pa-pa.

Tears stung at the back of his eyes.

Kukki struggled: P-pa!

Prerna smiled encouragingly: Pa-pa!

Kukki: Pa-a

Prerna: That's very good. Phir se beta? Papa.

Kukki nodded: Pap-pa

Prera burst into tears and covered Kukki up in kisses. Prerna hugged Kukki tightly and rocked her from side to side.

Rishab approached.

Prerna grabbed his hand before he could say anything. She seemed too thrilled to be aware of anything else.

Prerna pulled his hand: Rishab! Rishab look, she said Papa...she said Papa!

Rishab crouched down looking at Kukki in awe. Kukki suddenly felt shy and hid inside Rishab's blazer. He hugged her to him tightly.

Rishab in a broken voice: I heard.

Prerna: We have been working on it for weeks. Her first word! (She petted Kukki's hair).

Rishab took the hand Prerna extended and kissed her open palm: Thank you. It's the first thing she said to me when she was a baby too. Thank you (he kissed her hand again).

Hope bloomed in Prerna. She snatched her hand back and stood up, remembering where she was and feeling very awkward for her sudden outburst.

Prerna: Yes, well, congratulations. I better be going now.

She sped away before he could stop her.

He approached Prerna at the bus stop with Kukki in his arms: Let us drop you off.

Prerna nervously: Oh, I am fine! Thank you.

Rishab: I am sorry about just now. Please.

Prerna: Amirji hai. I will be fine.

Rishab: I will let him know. Please let us drop you, for Kukki's sake, don't stand in the heat like this.

Prerna sat on the far-side of the car, stiff as a board. Rishab watched her quietly as she put as much distance between them as possible.

Kukki crawled up to Prerna and lay her head on Prerna's the lap. She yawned and was soon asleep.

Prerna softly: I don't think we should mislead her like this.

Rishab: I agree.

They kept their voices low.

Prerna: I shouldn't have gotten in the car.

Rishab: Maybe you can start building some distance in school. Eventually I can (he stopped, it was too soon).

Prerna waited: You can...what?

Rishab cleared his throat: Listen, please don't get upset, but I was thinking it is best if we went back. That way, you and Kukki could both...move on.

Prerna froze: Went back...where?

Rishab couldn't look at her in the eyes: I only moved here to settle old scores and that didn't happen because of our...well, the plan wasn't to stay in Calcutta long-term. Kukki was to stay in this school for a year and then were going to move back. Perhaps we can do it after a semester instead.

Rishab petting sleeping Kukki's head. I realize these are too many changes for her little life, but I will trying to give her more stability when we are back in Mumbai.

Prerna grabbed his wrist with a vice. Rishab winced as her nails dug in, breaking through his skin.

Rishab looked up: I am sorry.

Prerna's eyes were red and she was breathing heavily. She was still holding his hand in her cutting grip.

Prerna deliberately: So that's your plan? You are now going to separate her from me!? Like nothing ever happened!?

Rishab: I know how bad it sounds. She is not ready to lose her mother again, I see that. I think if you help me ease her into it...

Prerna screamed: You bast--d!

The car stopped at her doorway. Prerna scooped up Kukki and got out of the car.

Rishab got off after her: Prerna, Prena! Where are you taking her!?

Veena looked up as a crazed looking Prerna walked in through the door with Kukki in her arms and shut the door on a frantic looking Rishab's face.

Prerna went into her room with Kukki still sleeping in her arms and shut the door behind them.

Veena walked up and opened the door. Rishab looked near tears.

Rishab could barely say: Kukki!

Veena calmly: Yes, come in, Prerna took her into her room.

Veena sat him down and gave him a glass of water.

Rishab in shock: I just said it's best if we moved back.

Veena: You really can't make a single right move, can you Rishab? Not even by mistake.

Rishab looked at Prerna's door desperately.

Veena: Don't worry, she won't harm Kukki. Give her a few. Oh Ma! Yeh kya hogaya!?

She looked at Rishab's blood stained cuff. She pulled it up and saw the deep, bloody crescents in his wrist.

Rishab brushed it off and hid his wrist: It's nothing.

Veena sighed: I need to have a word with Priyu about this.

She was muttering to herself as she went to fetch the first said. Rishab heard.

Veena: Driving each other crazy with antics and still not getting to the point.

Veena came with the gauze and antiseptic. Rishab stayed very still as she applied the ointment and wrapped him up.

Rishab pleaded: Please, Kukki is all I have.

Veena: I will call Priyu, let her cool down a bit. I will make you some chai.

Rishab frantically: I can't have chai, I want my daughter!

Veena: Tell me, are you really this stubborn and blind?

Rishab taken aback: What do you mean?

Veena: Have you ever been to a farm as a kid?

Rishab looked confused.

Veena: Did you ever steal a chick from it's mother when you were a kid?

Rishab: As if, the hen would peck your eyes out! Oh...

Veena: Samjhe?

Rishab: I know...she has every right to be mad, but...

Veena: But that wasn't the right way. I know, I will talk to her. Priyu has no right on your child anyway, so you don't have to worry.

Rishab sighed: She has every right. I know. She's more of a mother to her than I can be a father, but I didn't say I will take her away tomorrow. I asked for Prerna's help.

Veena rubbed her forehead in frustration: Rishab, you really really need to stop making quick decisions. This precision and quickness might help in business, but it really hurts in your personal life. Just take a deep breath and wait. Listen to your inner voice for a change. Is this what you want? Is this what is right?

Rishab: I don't...understand.

Veena patiently: Do you think breaking up this marriage was a good idea when Priyu had just come to accept it?

Rishab: She loves Anurag Basu!

Veena: Does she?

Rishab angrily: YES!!! She TOLD me, she told me she was always his. I am just trying to right a wrong here...why is she so upset to be free? Anurag wants her back, she loves him. They are perfect for each other. It's not like being stuck in an unhappy marriage where you hate your husband.

Veena took his hands and looked him in straight in the eye: She doesn't hate you.

Rishab retorted: She doesn't love me either.

He looked away, unable to meet his perceptive mother-in-law's all-seeing eyes.

Veena: So now you are punishing her for not loving you hard enough?

Rishab: That's not what I meant.

Veena: Sit here and think. I can't believe I have to tell you this, but I guess, you haven't had the right guidance in a while. Do you understand what it means to a woman to take vows with someone, love his child as her own, come to terms with the reality of it being her life only to have it all taken away?

Rishab was breathing softly: I know I have put her through a lot.

Veena: That's not the only point. Do you understand the emotions behind it? Do you understand your own emotions?

Rishab: I know my own emotions, Mrs. Sharma, but I do not understand your daughter.

Veena: Maybe it's time to try.

Rishab looked at her silently, totally following where she was going: She doesn't want me. She doesn't want a marriage with me, she said that a long time ago. And I promised her, never to disrespect her wishes. You have it all wrong.

Veena: Rishab, she's not going to go back to Anurag. Even if you leave with Kukki. That's already decided. So now, you need to consider why.

Rishab frustrated: Obviously because she wants to sacrifice herself again for Mr. Basu. If she just explained what happened, Mr. Basu...

Veena snapped: Rishab, women don't just switch husbands when they have accepted a marriage. She loves you and your daughter. If her sad attempt at a kidnapping didn't show you how much, I can't help you. She's too proud to ask and clearly you are too thick to understand. So I have to break it down for you. Now the question is, do you actually want a marriage or does her child prevent you from taking that step?
