Around 35 +- 1/2. Depending on health. Most suggest under 35 for health of both mother and baby.

Why 34 'is ideal age for women to start a family'

By Becky Barrow

12:01AM BST 25 Apr 2005

The ideal age for a woman to have her first baby is 34, according to controversial research.

Prof John Mirowsky's study of more than 2,200 women found that waiting to start a family is not a bad idea, a conclusion which will relieve many working women who agonise about when to have a baby.

He said: "Those women, and I see a lot of them in the classroom, they are really concerned about when it is best to start a family. I hope this will be just one piece of information they can use in making decisions about their own lives."

The study looked over several decades at the long-term health problems and risk of death based on when a woman's first child was born.

While women in their early 20s are more fertile and "biologically fit", older mothers tend to be more mature and engage in less risky behaviour, having become more settled educationally, financially and emotionally, Prof Mirowsky said.

Women who gave birth around puberty developed more health problems, but these problems diminish the longer a woman delays having her first child up to the age of 34. The health benefits begin at 22, peak at 34 but fall after this age.

Prof Mirowsky, from the University of Texas, said: "At any age, a woman who had her first child at 34 is likely to be, in health terms, 14 years younger than a woman who gave birth at 18."

The research, Age at First Birth, Health and Mortality, which appears in the Journal of Health and Social Behavior, found that "women who wait" enjoy better health, live longer and end up having healthier babies.

In Britain, the average age for a married woman to have her first baby is 30. In America, it is typically 25.

The findings have been criticised by several fertility experts who say that women conceive more easily and have fewer pregnancy complications in their 20s.

Cecilia Pyper, a senior research fellow at the department of public health at Oxford University, said: "Fertility is declining from the age of 35. For women who are just starting a family, it is pretty tight. Breast-feeding suppresses ovulation. A woman who has her first child at 34 will not be having her second until she is 37 or 38.

"I think a lot of women are looking at the age of 30 so if they run into trouble they can still have IVF and a second child."

Its better to have first baby before 30.

Above 30, incidence of fetal complications like down syndrome and other chromosomal anomalies and also maternal compications like gestational hypertension and gestational diabetes etc are more.

And also studies shows that incidence of CA breast is more in woman who start breast feeding late/dont breastfeed.

That being said i am in my late 20s..still unmarried and i dont think i will be having a baby before 30.

Though biologically best age for reproduction is before 30, perfect time to get pregnant is the time which feels right to you..

Now with regular anti natal check ups and tests, fetal complications are early picked up and option of abortion is made available ...its only maternal complications we have to worry about now.
