bajaj wants P to find out for herself that he is innocent. He can get released right now but he said he wants to start on a clean slate or something. For me that's symbolic that when he leaves there with P knowing he is innocent it's a fresh start for the both of them. Notice how both of them are away from one another and because bajaj is feeling for P he realize his mistake. In jail he will think over things and P she will also realize her mistakes with bajaj not around and think things through.
