I think female-orienteď films really depend on the director and the storyline. If the story is cliches and crap, it will not work even with good acting but if the story is strong and has a solid ensemble to back it up, it's going to work. For example, Sonam is not a good actress at all. But Neerja was a good movie because of the story and direction of it. And offcourse Shabana Azmi's speech at the end. Anyone could have done that film and it would be a hit. But a movie like Noor or Haseena Parker would flop even with bigger names because the story was all half-ass.
Also, Aashiqui2 was not a female oriented film. It was a musical love story that focused on both leads equally but most importanyly, the music. Aashiqui 2 had a good soundtrack where each and every song on that album was a huge hit. Not just 1.
