you ask your mom..........all mangalsutra's has black beads in it, alongwith gold.......thats the tradition...... you can exchange gold with silver or no gold, if the person is poor, but black beads are important.......

Even if someone wants to follow such traditions, it really depends from culture to culture. In my family, newlyweds aren’t supposed to wear black for 1.5 months post their wedding (if they want to actually follow it)
