This hug wasn't for saving her from death door. It was to stop her heart from crushing in pain to what she'd seen. It was to wholeheartedly hold onto this one person after her sister whom she unknowingly has given her everything too.

Hugs are associated with happiness this was such a sad hug.

And he let's her as he too has taken a step that has put a barrier between them for a short while. Her emotions are reverberating with his feelings of loss too.
