But in case of SRK, ... Koyla, and very few such movies apart,.. most of the chunk he got musical, geet-sangeet, family life, Shaadi, love-hate with no villain in the movies, sorta movies having no villain in it and hence, he saved the entire hard-work needed in that department,...

That dhishoom...dhishoom noise still makes me laugh 😆

And I agree with the bolded bits..greast ponts on script.. character connection, audience orientation, budget vs delivery.

So the hope is that once SRK gets a good script that can be seen by families there would be a resurgence in Indian BO.
And yes , agreed, budget and price it's sold to distributors have to be taken into consideration.

I think your points are fair.
Regarding what you like and dislike on the movies I agree and not. Fan for me was a fun madcap and I didn;t minf the OTT ness of the 'fan'. Being honest in US people have don e crazier things when it comes to stars they stan for ( there are man y stalking and threatening cases, people breaking in, pretending they have a relationship with the star... so..for me that part didn't look unfeasible).

On "Fan", It is not that you have "read about" such people. Do you think, "you" can act like Gaurav? That is what is connection.
Consider Baazigar, Sharukh's character even killed the female lead. But still at the end audience were able to sympathise with Sharukh's character (though they accepted the ending). The movie showed a background for his revenge. People could think "If they were to be in his (character's) shoes, they also would have felt the same".
This is the connection.

Did people feel like that with Gaurav in Fan? (If I were in Gaurav's place...).
Did the people feel like that in Zero? (If I was Bauua, ..). In fact, I heard every one calling Buaa Singh as a chutia. (Very similar to Kabhie Alwida Na Kehena. Even that was flop).

I just want Sharukh to do common man's roles. Not totally pious, righteous. But not obvious chutia.

He can play middle aged husband who wants to try out new ventures (cooking, writing poetry) having no basic knowledge. A women in audience can connect with her mad husband. He can be a petty obsessive(/stalkish) father. Any teenager can feel, he is as much nut case as his own parent.
Some simple story like ... a disoriented family with comedy ... some crisis (like job lay off/ fatal disease) ... (no melodramas) .. . people reconnecting with each other ... winning over crisis ... coming out strong ... back to chaos .. relatable characterisation/situation ... is sufficient.

Honestly, I think that the most important connect to a movie (book) is through the emotions one personally has while watching the movie. The thinking comes later, I guess, when one tries to describe the own emotions/perceptions/reception.

I still (and always will) think that the biggest obstacle to connect to a movie are expectations which already direct / influence the emotions you bring to the movie.

A trailer is - most often than not - an appetizer which doesn't say really much about the meal that will follow. So, when the trailer of Zero was hyped throughout, I always thought that people should be cautious not to believe that they now have already a feeling for the movie...it is just to stir curiosity and being a pleasure in itself.

I remember what people wrote about the teaser...they had been disappointed. I simply thought "well-made VFX, he seems to play a little guy with a lot of chuzpah...look at all the words they give him to characterize him".
When the trailer came out, I got to know about the magic/fancy angle and Bauua's
equation with Babita and Aafia and - in addition with the songs - I got in awe with the VFX-work. I had known that till then, one had worked with real short people and pasted the face of the actor but I saw that this wasn't the case here. I also sensed the kind of humour I would encounter in the movie.
What I didn't get was that the movie would be a blockbuster (I hate the hyperbolic praise)...one simply can't predict the success of such a 'movie out of the box'.

Yes, I am sad that so many people couldn't "connect" to the movie - for whatever reasons. I could - to every moment, every emotion and to the message(s)... I am even sadder about the way the work done had been (and still is) ridiculised and rejected in a demeaning and gleeful manner (I also hated this behaviour relative to ThugsofHindustan...I think I'll always hate it when one talks about other people's hard work this way - be it movies or anything else).

For SRK, I never liked him in his negative roles,... ( Be it Bazigar, Daar or Anjaam, Duplicate ..etc .) and I still wonder till date every day of my life,... Why and How Bazigar and Daar could be so successful and he got suddenly a sky-rise after those,... I still cannot digest or justify it to myself,...,.. 'Coz there was nthg new or any spectacular that I'd found in the movie,... Perhaps, I did saw those in VHS tapes on a 19 TV ? I was having the whole series of Kaka and Big B of all of their movies,... in my memory,...And Bazigaar and Daar was just a typical, very time-pass, masala, quite ordinary movies to me,... nthg else,...But next day , here, I woke up,,,... n' ppl were awing and amazing for those movies like, it shook the ground ! On My ! I was like,... " Whatt???" scratching my head, all day,... what was there, that I missed,... ! Did the new generation all of a sudden got JUST born, who never had seen any of the Prakash Mehra, Manmohan Desai, Subhash Ghai's, Yash's whole long past stoical action series,.. of Movies. ? Uh !

btw,...Big B in negative roles was a different story,... Be it,.. Deewar, Trishul, Faraar, agnipath, Parwana, aankhein,...or any,... ! He had his patent, his very own, unmatchable styles,... ! In Deewaar or agniptah or Trishul,... he dies and so does the audience mentally n' cries with him,... despite of his negative role, in those...

IMO, Bazigar and Daar were too much hyped,... No idea how and why it happened?

Also,.. in chipmunk kindaa , weirdo movies,... be it Fan or Zero ( have not seen it yet, is on Einthusan and will jump on it, now ) , where science is used to alter the face, height, Mohra,.. and such,... you never know where the acting starts and where the camera trick starts, and waht is ending where and what u R wating,...No idea,...and to give Credits to which factor, actor or masks and make-up art ? ? Movie Paa was also the same ( hate-worthy ) for me,... I hate such, " twisted actor - face and size and shape,.. " movies, personally. Let science art be good and limited till movies like Mowgli , Avatar and Planet of Apes,... do not apply such masks or alter the size, shape and chahera of a skilled actor, to disguise,... ! Let him act, He can do ,.. and need not a youngie looking plaster of Paris, masks ! It just sounds and seems disgusting,... Do it in Circuses with dwarfs,.. not on Silver screen !

Okay, then no, I don't think I COULD have acted like Gaurav(not my style, to be superfan) but movies are movies.. we suspend belief sometimes.
Still, for me FAN was very much enjoyable and fun..full of laugh out moments.
Zero, on the other hand was more of a 🤪..Too many tropes and absurd things going on. But it DID have some good parts ( Kat's part and SRK's interactions in the first half, in majority, was a fun story... ). The reason I think Zero might have failed to connect is in Baua himself. Too much of a ..'wrong' personality. Happy to do too many things people might not like or feel off about.Yes KANK style.
@bold: I think this is what was the prevalent wish of EVERYONE contributing: serious roles with a lot of feeling and good writing.
The issue seems to also be with scriptwriters and directors changing his character( or allowing SRK's character to be changed) ... cause SRK.
This tendency to treat the character as SRK is what..might be the reason people do not connect with the charatcer..find it not credible.. From middle class man that can afford all those expensive things.. this transition is too 'out there' for moviegoes. Or it might be thaty they simnply see SRK and not the 'poor guy' character and want the story to be different.

I thought about it.. and he could play a VERY RICH MAN LOSING EVRYTHING.. FALLING ON HARD TIME.. someone thta analyses who his friends are now he's not having everything.. his ionteractions with former girlfriuends he lavished with gifts and how they avoid him or moved on...
Something that can pull at the heartstrings of the audiences.

Of course one's interpretation and connect is totally personal and subjective.
The reason this discussion was started in the first place was exactly that- that a big majority of people have not been so.. supportive if you wish of SRK's movies.. whether theya re good or bad.. and we have all tried to look into the WHY it happened.
@bold: A lot of people stand with you in that sense- that expectations for a SRK movie are sky high.. and when not met.. one feels.. unhappy.( I even gavce example about a Very good singer and an Okaysh singer's performance ..and how public expectations are viasvis those two).
Trailers seel anticipation and bizzz and curiosity.. so the way they are cut is very important.. sometimes you HSOULD tell a lot in trailers,. sometimes NOT. ( I saw recently a masala movie and after trailer I wasn't expecting much for main lead, yet iot turned out the trailer was a 'con' as the movie was totally entertaining and lead was super fun.. So there's sides to it)
Basically: Cut trailer very well, think on it, based on each movie's merits.
Ia ctually liked the teaser fior Zero. I couldn't wait to see what he's doing dancing like that.. or whether he's gonna hit the moon or what.. so..personal perceptions and likes..very subjective.
Predicting which movie wil connect to the audience is hard.
See the two movies currently in BO,Uri and Manikarnika:both have a nationalistic/patriotic theme. Uri is running upwards to 200 cr and is BB, Manikarnika is struggling to reach 100 cr, with double Uri budget. Both have their detractors and both have their fans (and someone mentioned BJP.. well both movies have traction with them, right?) Why then one's BB and other not?Public choice. So again.. story, well fleshed out characters.. subject matter being approached with care, good craft, wholesomeness... it's attracting people. Whether they are both flawed or not it's by the by.. one is doping tremendous business one is not. Although BOTH could have done SUPERB biz... it's not the case.

It's become a lot about connect.. People want to be immersed in the story, forget their day to day lives and enjoy immensely the screen story. The background noise is by the by. Criticised or not .. a movie is going to do good business on WOM alone.
So WOM has to sustain a movie.
I know you are sad and all I can offer as consolation is hope- he is THE SRK and he can bounce back if he wants and is driven enough. He showed that with a few glimpses like DZ and Raees in parts.. of course.. he needs to chose best of the best and not get stuck with director name and go with it just cause of name. Many said: he should do with new directors- and that's a good idea ! Cause new directors might not be easy to sway. And he should tell from start: do YOUR vision man, I signed cause YOUR subject is what I like. If he's confidebnt and pleased with the character and the movie, gooid things will follow.
