Nice start . I don't remember the old story but this looks interesting
Chapter Three: Alienated
-- ANGAD
Angad slowly made his way towards his brother and Mishti through the crowd and found them laughing together in a corner. They both turned to look at him as he approached.
"Your friend is out cold in my room. Angad said to a drunk Mishti who stepped out of Karthik's grip almost immediately.
"Is she okay? She exclaimed gripping Angad's arm to stabilize herself.
"She'll be fine. You need to drink some water or eat something. Angad said to her, turning to a concerned Karthik for some help.
"I need to grab her and take her home. Mishti mumbled turning to her boyfriend behind her.
"Uh, no you don't. Angad snapped. She was too drunk out of her mind to drive, let alone take a friend with her as well. "You can sleep with your friend in my room. With that, he let his brother guide her to Angad's room as he stood there, watching them walk away. Angad shook his head in exasperation, enraged almost, that Mishti had driven to the party knowing they were going to drink. If there was anything that Angad Khanna hated, it was drunk drivers.
He popped open a can of beer from the fridge and seated himself in a high chair in the kitchen, casually sipping it. Several of Karthik's female friends approached him, attempting to make conversation but he just wasn't interested. The last time he had been on a date or even socialized in general was a couple months ago, before his mom passed away. After that, it seemed like life just stood still for the longest time. He had no sense of direction or motivation to do much anymore; he woke up in the morning, went about as his day but it no longer felt real. It felt like a sequence of mechanical actions that he did throughout the day every single day.
The only person that kept him grounded was his brother, Karthik. Although they were half brothers, sharing just their mom, Karthik was as good as a full brother to Angad. He never really had an issue with his step-father having been practically raised by him since he was 2 years old, but after his mother passed away, even that relationship deteriorated very quickly. Angad tended to alienate close family and friends when he was struggling with himself and his emotions, and his step-father just happened to be one of them.
After a volatile fight one day between him and his step-father Dilip, Angad gathered his stuff and moved out. Karthik moved himself into Angad's home by force shortly after, not wanting to give Angad a chance to shut him out as well. And here they were now, at the house, celebrating Karthik's 27th birthday, surrounded by Karthik's friends. Angad hadn't been around this many people in months, and while it felt uncomfortable, he realized how important it was for him to get his shit together again. The first step of recovery was lying in his bedroom right now, passed out.
The next morning, Angad woke up in the guest bedroom with a pounding headache. He winced as he sat up, thinking about the amount of pain Kripa Malik was about to be in when she woke up. Smirking, he grabbed a bottle of Advil from the bathroom cabinet and brought it out to the kitchen, leaving it on the counter for her. His stomach knotted up in uneasiness when he thought of finally booking that much needed appointment with her. He was going to have to drop his ego and face the music. He needed help.
After a quick shower, Angad found himself walking right into his psychologist who looked like straight hell, for a lack of a better term.
"I can't say that I don't like being gawked at by decent looking guys but right now, I know I look like complete shit so stop it. Kripa snapped, shooting him a death glare. Angad couldn't help but laugh, and when she winced grabbing her head at the sound, he laughed even harder.
"Here, take an advil grumpy pants, you clearly need it. Angad said throwing at the bottle at her. He watched the bottle fall at her feet, her reflexes obviously not quite working just yet. "I'll make you something nice and greasy. But you know what the best cure for a hangover is? He asked her, grabbing a pan from the cupboard.
"What? She muttered throwing her head in her hands as she took a seat at the high chair.
"More liquor. He announced grandly as he pulled out a bottle of tequila and slammed it down in front of her. Kripa slapped a hand over her mouth as her face turned unusually pale.
"No. Put that away. I can't even look at liquor right now. She cried burying her face in her arms. Angad chuckled, putting the tequila away and going back to making her an oily as heck omelette.
He wanted to bring up booking an appointment but the words just got caught in his throat. I'll just call and book it with the receptionist and she'll just find out when I come in, he thought whisking the eggs absentmindedly.
"Whatever you're making, I'll take one too. Mishti said, coming out of his room, her hair half up, half down. Crease marks marred her face, and she looked just as disastrous as Kripa with her bloodshot red eyes. "Where's Karthik?
"He sleeps in till late, you should know this by now. Angad retorted flipping his first omelette. "I'm the early riser in the fam. With that, he grabbed a plate and placed Kripa's omelette in front of her, motioning for her to eat.
"I'm going to go wake him up while you make that omelette. Mishti said, getting up and heading towards Karthik's room.
When Kripa stood up to grab a glass of orange juice, Angad walked up behind her as she stood in front of the fridge and leaned down to speak into her ear. He noticed goosebumps rise on her smooth skin and he felt his lips curve up into a smile.
"For the record, I'm more than decent looking. He said purposely brushing his lips against her soft, red cheek. She's your doctor, Khanna. This is the definition of inappropriate. He took a step back as reality washed over him like a cold glass of water. He turned around before she could face him and went back to making the omelettes, feeling her intent gaze on him.
She was a tiny, pretty thing, barely grazing his shoulder with her height and he had definitely been around the company of better looking females, but this one he had a feeling, was about to get under his skin. She had sparking light brown eyes that lit up everytime she smiled, slight dimples appearing in her smooth fair cheeks. Unfortunately, she was also his doctor and having any sort of relationship aside from the patient-doctor connection, was illegal. He wasn't going to risk both their jobs and reputations for a quick fling because he couldn't keep it in his pants.
The silence was almost deafening between the two of them, and it got awkward just as quickly as well. The awkwardness remained for the rest of the morning until Kripa left with Mishti, both avoiding eye contact with one another. Maybe I should get a new psychologist, Angad thought. But he also knew that he wasn't going to do that.
