EXCLUSIVE: Barun Sobti's Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon 3 to go off air; producer Gul Khan tells us why
Gul Khan talks to Pinkvilla exclusively about Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon 3 starring Barun Sobti and Shivani Tomar going off air.
When the third installment of Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon was announced, Barun Sobti's fans couldn't contain their happiness. The show which also marked Barun Sobti's comeback to Indian television was launched amid huge hype in July 2017.
However, with the show failing to grab many eyeballs, the makers have finally decided to pull the plug. Taking to Instagram, producer Gul Khan announced that the last episode of Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon 3 will be telecast on October 6, 2017.
While this is definitely sad news for the loyal fans of Barun Sobti and the show, Gul Khan, who is currently under the weather, tells us the reason behind this sudden decision and what perhaps went wrong with season 3 of the show.
Here's what Gul Khan has to say:
1. Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon 3 marked the comeback of Barun Sobti on TV. What is the reason behind pulling it off so suddenly?
The show is getting pulled off due to low ratings.
2. Do you think audiences' extreme negative reaction online resulted in low TRPs?
I don't think the real audience of the Indian heartland, which BARC is measuring, is the same audience that's reacting to the previous season. The online audience never translates into ratings, therefore their negativity also does not translate into low ratings! For instance, Ishqbaaaz is extremely popular and loved online but rating wise it's not No. 1.
The show (IPKKND) was not watched enough by the audiences that networks measure, therefore the decision was taken to shut it. Online popularity or negativity does not impact the ratings much actually. No matter how popular the show is online it doesn't become a highly rated show and no matter how much negative chatter is there online, it doesn't result in low ratings. IPKKND simply didn't do well in BARC ratings.
3. IPKKND has been a brand name in itself. What according to you did not work for the show this time?
When you do a sequel it's always risky. If you go too different, that's not what people were expecting. If you do the same thing, audiences are like why is it the same. So, it's a tricky game in any case.
4. It was said that the show was earlier not supposed to be the third installment of IPKKND. Do you think that perhaps if it wasn't the same franchise, the audience would have accepted it in a better way?
Whether the audience will accept it or not is predicting the future and we are not playing that game here. Till the show is out there, nobody except God knows whether it will be accepted or not.
5. Everyone had a lot of expectations from the show, given that it was by 4 Lions and had Barun Sobti in it. Do you have any regrets with regards to the show?
I don't have any regrets at all. Every show whether it rates or not is always a journey and a learning. We tried something new by doing a new universe of a Hindu social; it didn't work. But we gave it our best shot and now we will move on with our learnings and experiences.
6. Future projects?
There are a couple of future projects, which obviously I can't talk about right now. But looking forward to them.
We hope to see the Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon team making a comeback soon!
