Most likely Padmavati was insignificant until Padmavat was published and romanticized a character that might otherwise have been forgotten.

They have to exist to begin with. Padmavati's existence doesn't seem likely at all, seems like a character that emerged over time rather than a historical one.

Nice thread, love history but don't know much about Indian history. This corrobrates what I said in another thread, the Padmavati whose reflection inspired conflict never existed, there may have another obscure but then regular queens wouldn't make compelling tales..

Except the point about Cleopatra being a great beauty Queen pun intended- it's a myth, historians and pictures like to depict her as such but coins generally give a closer to reality portrayal and this one suggests anything but beauty in the conventional sense:

It was her sex appeal, 'do or die' ambitions and seductive wiles to present herself to Caesar by wrapping herself in a rug for hours in scorching heat that got her the reputation of being some great beauty. Neither would Nefertiti have been as ethereal as her bust depicts, busts generally are sculpted with symmetrical features for convenience and this idea of attractiveness perpetuates through centuries.

Which is why it's weird seeing people take special umbrage at Padmavati's monobrow, great men have been inspired by lesser beauties as Cleo proved and she actually changed the landscape of roman history.

If I could sum it up in a couple of sentences I wouldn't have felt the need to dedicate a whole topic to it... Anyway, historians have rejected her authenticity because there is no historical evidence other than the poem of Jayasi and the many other interpretations of it.
